Pupil and parent learning sheetWeek beginning: 6th July 2020
This week's work for Year 6 Maths is about ratios: how to recognise and calculate them, as well as solving problems involvingthem. Finally, you will get the chance to practice your arithmetic skills. By the end of this week, you should be able to:
1. Understand the ratio symbol2. Calculate ratios3. Use scale factors4. Solve ratio and proportion problems5. Practice your arithmetic skills
All the information and links to the resources you need are in this presentation. The videos from the White Rose website (Summer Term Week 10 - w/c 29th June) all still work, but the questions and answers are not on the website. DO NOT WORRY – I’ve put them all into the presentation for you☺
There are five lessons for this week, so you can do a different lesson each day. Do not worry if you don’t finish everything – all that matters is that you try your best. If some of the work is too tricky, we have also included some BBC Bitesize and Mathswatch activities to complete for each day instead, alongside x-table practice on TT Rockstars.
Remember, if you have any questions you can contact us at [email protected] and we will reply to you as quickly as we can.Enjoy!

:Ratio, simply, is comparing something to (:) something else.
Remember, though, if you are comparing faces to hearts – the number of faces must go first:
3: 2
4:6 2:3You can ‘simplify’ ratios, just like you can with fractions by finding a common denominator for both sides – in this case 2.
__:___:___:___
There is no limit to how many things you compare –as long as you separate with a colon (:)
You can say it as four ‘to’ one. When you write it –replace the ‘to’ with a colon, like this:
4:1

You can watch it more than once if you want!
These notes will give you some extra help if you needWe have taught you at school to write it like this:
1 bag : 7 sweets
3 bags : __ sweets
We know how much the number of bags increases – but what is the multiple? 1 x __ = 3
If we multiply the one side of the colon by three, we must do the same to the other side.
7 x 3 = 21
So there are 21 sweets in three bags.
Mr Scarle’s share
Mr Byrom’s share
There is a total of £56 to be shared between the two teachers
When we know the total and we know who has ‘how many parts’ we can use that to work out how much they get each.
If Mr Scarle has five parts and Mr Byrom, three, there are 8 parts in total.
If 8 parts = £56, we need to find out how much one part is (56 ÷ 8)
One part is £7! If Mr Scarle has five parts, you’d do 5x7 to work out he has £21 in total.
£7 £7 £7 £7 £7 £7 £7 £7
Mr Scarle’s Mr Byrom’s
£35 £21

Scale factor (sometimes SF, for short):
Basically means how many times bigger or smaller you are making each side
A
B
2 4
Square A has been enlarged by a scale factor of 2 because 2 x 2 = 4
Square B has been enlarged by a scale factor of 0.5 because 4 x 0.5 = 2
This works for regular (same length sides) and irregular (different length sides) – you just have to multiply all sides by the scale factor enlargement.
Don’t fall into this trap!!!
C
D
3
7
Q. Enlarge triangle C by a Scale Factor of 4
Instead of multiplying, I’ve just added 4 to the length, which is incorrect!
You could also say that Square A has doubled in size and Square B has halved in size
Some key words:
Half – x by 0.5Double – x by 2Triple – x by 3Quadruple – x by 4
Can you research and find out what 5x is? 6x is?
Here are the questions from the activity. Don’t worry if you can’t do them all, just try your best.

• A whole x a decimal? (15 x 1.5)
• Splitting the enlargement up? [(15 x 1) + (15 x 0.5)]

Ratio tables are key here:
1 person 2 people
5 sweets
6 chocolate
___ drink
__ sweets
___ chocolates
500ml drink
BEFORE WE START:
What do we multiply 1 by to get 2?
We multiply by 2 so therefore each part of the
question requires this information (either to x or
÷)1 person -> x 2 -> = 2 people
5 sweets -> x 2 -> = 10 sweets
6 chocolates -> x2 = 12 chocolates
250ml drink = ÷ 2 <- 500ml drink
This one goes the other way! We know 2 people so what do we divide 2 by to
make 1?
There are 6 red to every 2 blue counters in a pile. There are 32 counters in total. How many blue are there? Again – knowing your times
tables is key here!
Step 1: Write it out
Red : Blue : Total
6 2
32
We know our starting ratio. So let’s work out how many counters that gives us 6 + 2 = 8.
8
Step 2: Solve it!
There are 32 counters in the pile. Each ‘part’ is 8 counters. How many times does 8 go into 32? 4
We need to multiply everything by 4
24 8
Here are the questions from the activity. Don’t worry if you can’t do them all, just try your best.
Is 15 a multiple of 6?
You will have to add another step – find a multiple of 6 that is also a multiple of 15 – for
example, 30.
Now consider:
To go from 6 -> 30, I multiply by 5 and then 30 -> 15, I divide by 2.
What other ways can you think of doing?
Watch for that non-multiple question again! This time, I won’t give you any tips but remember to
use what you did for 1c)
Here are the questions from the activity.
Is there an easier way than finding your
common multiples of 500 and 750?!
What do you notice about these numbers?
1000ml = 1 litre
