GoalsforBehaviourManagement

AtAl-TaqwaCollege,weaimtodevelopourstudentscharacter,promotepositivebehaviour andpromoteasafe,respectfulandcaringenvironmentforallstudentsandteachers.Thiswillenableourstudentstobettermanagedifficultandstressfulsituations,developselfcontrolandmasteryinmanagingthemselves,theirbehaviourandrelationships.ThiswillallowthemtoreflectupontheirchoicesinordertomakethenecessarychangestotheirbehaviourasglobalMuslimcitizens.

ThePrimarySchoolsupportsthewelfareandwell-beingofstudents,theirfamiliesandstaff.TheSchoolcounsellorsalsoaimtoprovideassistancetoaccess relevantservicesandinformation,andsupportstudentsindividuallyoringroupsettings.

Theseguidelineswillbeforstudents,staffandparents.

RestorativeJusticeandBehaviourManagement

Restorativepracticeisanemergingfieldofstudythatenablespeopletorestoreandbuildcommunityinanincreasinglydisconnectedworld. (www.iirp.org)

Restorativepracticeisanapproachthatenablestherepairofrelationshipsthathavebeendamaged,includingthosedamagedthroughbullying.Itdoesthisbybringingaboutasenseofremorseandrestorativeactiononthepartoftheoffenderandforgivenessbythevictim.Thismethodisnotaboutsimplypunishingoffenders,butratherholdsoffendersaccountablefortheirerrors,whichmayhelpreducereoffending.

Aschoolthatappliesrestorativepracticeaimstoallowthevictimsandoffendersandtheirrespectivecommunitiesofcaretobeactiveparticipantsinprocessesthatensureequaljusticeandfairness.

Therationalebehindthisapproachisthatwhenoffendersreflectupontheirharmtovictims:

• Theybecomeremorsefulandactrestoratively• Practitionerscanfocusontheunacceptablebehaviourofoffendersratherthantheirmoral

character• Healthierinterpersonalrelationsdevelopedamongmembersoftheschoolcommunity

1. Restorativepracticecanbeundertakeninavarietyofforums.Itmaybeconductedwithvaryingdegreesofformalityandmayincludejustthosestudentsmostdirectlyinvolvedinbullyingorinsomecircumstancesawholeclass.‘CommunityConferences’includesupportivethirdpartiessuchasfriends,familiesandpossiblyacommunityfiguresuchasapolicecommunityliaisonofficer.Thisforumisusedtoaddressconcernsofbothindividualsandthewidercommunity.

2. Theworkinschoolswithcasesofbullyingiscommonlyguidedbyflashcardsoranagreedscriptwhichdirectpractitionerstoasktheoffendertodescribewhathappenedandtoreflectonwhatharmwasdone.Thevictimisaskedtosayhowsheorhehasbeenaffectedandwhatneedstobedonetomakeamends.

3. Feelingsofshamethatareelicitedneedtoleadtore-integrationintothecommunityratherthanasenseofbeingalienatedandstigmatised.

4. Inthespiritofpersonalresponsibility,forgivenessandcommitmenttopositivefuturebehaviour,boththevictimandtheoffenderexpresstheiracceptanceoftheproposedsolution/sanddiscusswhatcanbedonetopreventarecurrence.

5. Thesituationisthenmonitoredbyschoolstaffmembersandfurtherinterventionoccursifthesituationdoesnotimprove.

Restorativepracticescanalsobeappliedtoothermisbehaviours,suchasansweringbacktoteachersorvandalisingschoolproperty.Itallowsstudentsto‘rightthewrong’thathasbeendone.Itprovidesaplatformforstudentstoworkthroughproblems/misbehaviours andallowsthemtocollaborativelycometoasolution,butalsoensuresthattheyaredealtwithinarespectfulmanner.

Repercussionsshouldfitthemisbehaviour andstudentsshouldbegiventheopportunityto‘rightthewrong’.Punitivemeasureswilloftenhavethereverseeffectofwhatweintendandresultsinresentmentandfurtherbullyingifgiveninresponsetoabullyingincident.Arestorativeprocesswillalsogivestudentsavoice,boththevictimandtheoffender,andensuresstudentsaredealtwithfairly.

Theteacher–studentrelationshipisoneofthemostpowerfulelementswithinthelearningenvironment.Apositiverelationshipbetweenteachersandstudentsmayinfluenceastudent’sacademicoutcomesandbehaviour.Supportiveandpositiverelationshipsbetweenteachersandstudentscanpromotea“senseofschoolbelonging”andencouragestudentsto“participatecooperativelyinclassroomactivities”.

TheCorrectiveBehaviourManagementPolicyistofacilitateaconsistent,transparentandfairadministrationofStudentBehaviourManagementacrosstheschool,whereadultinterventionisrequired.

ThisinturnwillensuredueprocessforVRQA complianceandadherencetoourrestorativeapproach.

Thisguidelineensuresthatstudentsarenotdeprivedoftheirbasicrights(example:learning,health,personalsafety,dignityandrighttoconfidentiality).Studentsmustbegiventheopportunitytobeheardandtheirsideofthestorytold.

TheCorrectiveBehaviourManagementGuidelineisdividedintofourcategories,minor,medium,majorandextreme.

Investigations and interviews must be conducted in a room which ensures confidentiality, safetyand is conducive to the conduct of a fair investigation without interruptions. Students must begiven the opportunity to reflect and learn from their actions and make reparations as part of theCollege’s restorativepractice.

Incasesofmajorincidentswhichinvolvestudenthealthandsafety(especiallyifitissexualinnatureandspecificallyifthestudentisbelowtheageofconsent[18]),parentsmustbeimmediatelyinformed.Noexceptionsasthisisalegalrequirement.

ExpulsioncanonlybeusedafterallotherformsofBehaviourManagementhavebeenexhaustedandtheSchoolmustdemonstrateevidencethatthishasoccurred.Expulsionscannotbeimplementedasaconsequenceforeventsofnovelnature(suchasone-offpranks)whichdonotcauseanyharmtootherstudentsormembersoftheschoolcommunity.

Thestudentsbehaviourmustmeetoneormoreofthefollowingconditions:

• Behavesinsuchawayastoposedanger,whetheractualorperceivedtothehealth,safetyorwell-beingofanyperson;

• Causesignificantdamageto,ordestructionof,property;

• Commitsorattemptstocommitorisknowinglyinvolvedinthetheftofproperty;

• Possesses,usesorsellsordeliberatelyassistsanotherpersontopossess,useorsellillicitsubstancesorweapons;

• FailstocomplywithanyclearandreasonableinstructionofaStaffmembersoastoposeadanger,whetheractual,perceivedorthreatened,tothehealth,safetyorwell-beingofanyperson;

• Consistentlyengagesinbehaviourwhichvilifies,defames,degradesorhumiliatesanotherpersonbasedonage;breastfeeding;gender;identity;impairment;industrialactivity;lawfulsexualactivity;maritalstatus;parent/carerstatusorstatusasacarer;physicalfeatures;politicalbelieforactivity;pregnancy;race;religiousbelieforactivity;sex;sexualorientation;

• Personalassociation (whetherasarelativeorotherwise)withapersonwhoisidentifiedbyreferencetoanyoftheaboveattributes;

• Consistentlybehavesinanunproductivemannerwhichinterfereswiththewell-being,safetyoreducationalopportunitiesofanyotherstudent

• OnlythePrincipalhastheauthoritytomakethefinaldecisiononthesuspensionorexpulsionofastudent.IftheyareunavailabletheActingPrincipalwillbedelegatedthisrole.

• Inbothcases,forstudentswhohaveseparatedparents,itimportanttorememberthatsuspensionandexpulsionareseriousdisciplinarymeasuresandthereforeallparentsandcarersareentitledtobenotifiedoftheintentiontosuspendorexpelthestudent.Incircumstanceswherethereismorethanoneparentorcarerwhowouldliketoparticipateinthesuspensionandexpulsionprocess,itisimportanttoinvolveallparentsorcarersintheprocess.
