The Alumni and Ex-Students Association was first formally organized during the
administrative years of Principal Edward Levoiser Blackshear (1896-1915) as evident from
historical records. On the occasion of the Association's 60th Anniversary Report (Volume 2,
January 20, 1960, No.1), then Chairman of the Board, Dr. I. T. Hunter (Class of 1926) sites
the year 1901 as the hallmark year. Principal E. L. Blackshear was a program organizer and
political strategist. He realized that a strong Alumni Association in support of the four-year
curriculum would give him a much needed organized constituent base, a necessity for
survival in the turbulent sectional politics of the South.
The first 22 years of the Association's history is still being reconstructed and undoubtedly
will be recorded in future essays and narratives of our Association, as historical scholars
take to the field and engage this great work. It was not until the administration of Dr. J. G.
Osborne that the interest in the Alumni Association received new momentum, the
consequence of which was the reorganization of the General Alumni and Ex-Students
Association in 1923, with O. P. DeWalt as President.
The Association, as it exists today, received a Certificate of Incorporation from the State of
Texas, May 20, 1986 under the name of "Prairie View Agricultural & Mechanical University
National Alumni and Ex-Students Association." On September 25, 1986, the Association was
granted recognition as a tax exempt, non-profit organization under the 501(C)(3) tax code
by the Internal Revenue Service. After revision, the Constitution and By-Laws were adopted
by the members of the Association on October 24, 1986. During this period, the Association
was also officially recognized by the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents as the
official alumni association for Prairie View A&M University. The Association also underwent
two more name changes, with the final change occurring February 9, 1991. The State
Charter was changed to reflect this final name change as it now appears, "Prairie View A&M University National Alumni Association."
The purpose of the Association is to form a union of Prairie View A&M University, alumni and
ex-students, and interested citizens of similar aspirations for the perpetuation of Prairie
View A&M University by:
Building and fostering understanding and support of the University;
Providing services to alumni and loyal friends of the University;
Encouraging communications among alumni and the University;
Serving as the central organization for the various alumni chapters and clubs; and
Organizing and implementing programs necessary for securing grants, endowments, and other financial assistance for the University.
The Association's field of membership is open to all alumni and ex-students having
completed at least one semester or one full summer term (both sessions) and departed in
good standing with the University. Associate memberships (non-graduates or ex-students of
Prairie View) are available for any spouse, offspring, parent, or friend of Prairie View alumni
as outlined in the Constitution and By-Laws.
There are two designations of memberships: annual member and life member. The
Association brings its members together during two annual functions: its national
convention (to be held in Los Angeles: July 15-19, 2015) and the Homecoming activities on
campus. There are currently 34 active chapters across the nation that host activities
throughout the year.
The Association actively solicits support for University programs that must be self-
supporting and encourages alumni and friends to give freely on a perpetual basis (all
donations to the Association and the University are tax-deductible). The Association has
established two endowed scholarship programs with the University. The premier fund, "The
Prairie View National Alumni Association Teacher Education Scholarship Fund," was
established to support students entering the teaching profession regardless of discipline.
The other, "The First Class Alumni Scholarship Fund," was established in 2001. In addition,
there exists several alumni chapter endowed scholarship funds and class endowed funds that benefit students and programs at Prairie View A&M University.
The Association acquired its headquarters building in October 1990, during the Rolark
Administration (29th Association President), located at 148 University Drive (formerly FM-
1098) at US Highway 290. The building was dedicated May 11, 1991. A cornerstone with
the names of the executive Board of Directors of that period was erected in recognition of
this achievement. On November 08, 1996, a mortgage burning ceremony was conducted
during the 1996 Homecoming weekend, in celebration of having made the final payment on
the building loan, May 07, 1996. During this occasion, the unveiling of the permanent
plaque of donors that helped make this possible also took place. These names are engraved
on purple, gold, and silver plates denoting the level of giving. Another milestone was
reached when the Board of Directors with the support of members officially named the
headquarters building in honor of then current Executive Director, who gave 12 years of
uncompensated service, the "George E. Higgs Alumni Building." The unveiling took place on September 1, 2001 at a scheduled board meeting, Labor Day weekend.
The current president of the Prairie View A&M University National Alumni Association is Mr.
Carl Young. The headquarter offices are managed by Administrative Assistant, Ms. Erma
Simon Sadberry.

The Prairie View A&M University National Alumni Association would like to invite you to consider a unique marketing opportunity for your company or small business. The 2015 PVAMU National Alumni Association Convention is a gathering of Prairie View alumni, family, and friends from across the country, and this year the gathering will take place July 15-19, 2015 in Los Angeles at the Westin
Hotel, Los Angeles Airport. Prairie View A&M University was founded in 1876 as a coed institution for Negroes and a land grant college in Prairie View, TX. Prairie View is located forty miles northwest of Houston. The current student enrollment is diverse, predominately African American with eighty percent of the students receiving some form of financial assistance. The University strives to maintain excellent instruction and a strong curriculum. It also nurtures each student’s academic development and intellectual
curiosity by providing a stimulating physical and cultural environment. The University takes pride in producing many outstanding graduates who have made significant contributions to society. The National Alumni Association and its affiliated chapters provide scholarships to deserving students
attending Prairie View A&M University. If there were no scholarships available, qualified students would not be able to attend the University. Accordingly, we are asking that your company consider making a financial contribution to our National Convention. Your contribution will allow the National
Alumni Association and its affiliated chapters to continue to provide funding for deserving students. This year’s convention theme is “2015 PV Alumni Family Reunion.” We believe that this convention is a prime opportunity for bringing together businesses and consumers that utilize products and services and support the goals and purpose of the National Alumni Association. We are certain that your company would not want to miss out on such an opportunity, and we encourage you to contact the National Alumni Association or the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter to personally discuss ways to magnify
your involvement. The 2015 PVAMU National Alumni Association Convention offers your organization some very attractive and exciting opportunities, and we look forward to having you partner with us on this very important endeavor. We are working diligently to make this convention a valuable experience for all participants and look
forward to your involvement. Sincerely, Mr. Carl Young Mr. Herb Sims President President
