Picnic Season Is HereFor a portable meal that will be

eaten alfresco, simple foods arebest. Remake classic sandwiches aswraps for convenience. Salads,meat-and-cheese trays andprecooked chicken are also terrificpicnic treats, and fresh fruits andvegetables are perfect for outdoordining.

Prevent crushed chips byplacing the entire bag in a zipperbag and leaving a cushion of airwhen you close it. Pourcondiments such as ketchup andmustard into smaller containers soyou can take only the amount youwill need.

Keep food safety in mind, anduse ice, ice packs or frozen bottlesof water to maintain cold foods at40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower.Avoid mayonnaise, which spoilsquickly. If you’re grilling, wrapraw meat tightly and store themeat in its own ice chest. If yourcooler ice melts, the food inside isprobably no longer safe to eat.

Pack cold drinks in a separatecooler so you can open and close

it frequently without affecting thetemperature of the food you haveprepared.

Wrap hot foods in towels andplace them inside a sturdy box orinsulated bag. Eat hot foods nomore than two hours after theyare cooked.

Alleviate AllergiesFor those who suffer from

seasonal allergies, spring oftenmeans sneezing, congestion anditchy eyes. There are ways to lessenthe symptoms and still enjoy theseason. Here are a few tips:

Keep it clean. Cleaning yourhome will reduce pollen andother allergens. Vacuum and dustregularly, and wash your sheetsweekly. Leave your shoes at thedoor to prevent tracking allergensthroughout your home. Shower orbathe before bed to keep pollenyour hair has gathered throughoutthe day off your pillow.

Be aware outside. Avoid goingoutside on days with particularlyhigh pollen levels. When outside, wear sunglasses to help keepallergens out of your eyes.

Curb congestion. Eat more spicyfoods to reduce nasal congestion.Chewing gum and eatingpeppermint can also help.Drinking more water and juicewill improve hydration and helpclear nasal passageways.

Our Disoriented Old ShouldBe Accepted As They Are

The action of a person who isdisoriented, no matter howbizarre, has real and importantmeanings.

It is a part of a healing process, and it is not helpful to changethat. This may seem totallyopposite of what you feel, havebeen told or have learned. Youknow that you cannot changeanother person unless that personwants to change. So it is withdisoriented elderly: They cannotchange. Your goal is to develop abetter relationship with thisperson and to communicate withthem, not to change the behavior. The first step is to simply acceptthem as they are. This will makeyou feel better and eventuallyleads to a better relationship. What this also means is that youhave to let go. Your mother orfather is becoming different fromthe mother or father whom youknew. This is the first step ofsaying good-bye, and that can bepainful or difficult. Realize thatthis is your process and very

different from what your relativeexperiences or needs, at thismoment. BE aware of your desireto have your relative “be like shewas” because that would makeyou feel more comfortable. This isnot to denigrate your feelings ofloss or your needs, but it simply isnot realistic to try to get yourrelatives to adapt to your needs. Itwill not work, and everyone willfeel worse. Your needs are alsoimportant, and you should notforget them, but try to do that in away that will help yourself as wellas your relative. Correcting yourrelative’s behavior or trying to getthem to act in a certain way willonly create frustration, withdrawal, confusion, angryoutbursts and slow degenerationto more disorientation.

Thank you again for expressinghow you like the previous articlethat I wrote in March. You canalso send me your thoughts orfeedback via email, or if there isanything you want to hear fromme. My email is adimacali@belmontvillage.com, yourfeedback is very important.

Nurse’s Notes

Since 1987, April has beendesignated to be AlcoholAwareness Month by the NationalCouncil on Alcoholism and DrugDependence, Inc. (NCADD).Often times, people get caught upin the glitz and glamour ofalcohol, and the fact that alcoholis a drug is promptly forgotten. That’s why once a year, it’s goodto remind people about thedangers and health implicationsassociated with alcohol.

Alcohol abuse and alcoholismcan affect all aspects of a person’slife. 1 in every 12 adults sufferfrom alcohol abuse ordependence, it is the mostcommonly used addictivesubstance in the United States.More than 7 million children livein a household where at least oneparent is dependent on or hasabused alcohol.

Over time, excessive alcoholuse can lead to numerous healthproblems including Dementia, liver diseases, and cardiovascularproblems. Alcoholism has little todo with how long one has beendrinking or how much alcohol isconsumed but with a person’s

uncontrollable need for alcohol. We can make a difference by

encouraging our family or friendsto make small changes, likekeeping track of their drinkingand setting drinking limits. Wecan stay pro-active by knowingwhat we’re drinking and howmuch alcohol is in it. And alwaysdrink plenty of water in betweendrinks. And remember, the oldadage “everything in moderation”is never truer than when drinkingalcohol.

Super Food: OrangesWe know oranges are a great

source of vitamin C, which helpsmaintain a strong immunesystem, but they also have manyother health benefits. The dietaryfiber in oranges can help reducehigh cholesterol levels and keepblood sugar levels under control. One study found that consumingone extra serving of citrus fruit aday reduced the risk for stroke byalmost 20 percent. Oranges are agood source of B vitamins, vitamin A, calcium andpotassium. The phytonutrientsand flavonoids in oranges haveanti-inflammatory properties. Andthey smell amazing!
