By Laura LevinskyFor many of us, the happiest
part of the New Year is that we have a whole new year ahead of us. So much emphasis has been placed on it being 2021. All the troubles of 2020 are behind us and we can go back to business as usual. But that isn’t always the case.
We asked our readers, “What are you hoping for in 2021?” Their responses follow and fall into categories.
Not sure of the future“Stay in bed and pull the
covers over my head!”“I have no idea what lessons
I’m taking in other than that people are stupid, I don’t know if
that is a lesson.” “I’m taking the lesson of
never taking anything for granted unto 2021. Tomorrow is never promised. Also, so many things have happened this year that I swore would never happen or I would never do, but I’ve learned to never say never.”
Stay strong: “Question the government.
Try not to encourage haters.”“I’m looking forward to the
opening of the economy and finding a job!”
“Some people may be jerks, but that doesn’t mean everyone is or that I have to be. I’m going to surround myself with people who share my positive attitude.”
Thanks Kathleen for your unwavering support for us and the community. Your partnership has been instrumental in making the valley safer. I truly enjoyed working with you and the rest of
It is the people that matter:“Lessons: Only my opinion of
me matters; friends are precious; and family and love will help you carry on. I’m looking forward to hugging people again.”
“Whether I am with my family or not, whether I can see them or not, I know that my family loves me. That will take me through whatever 2021 brings.”
“I’m looking forward to seeing my family members again. 2020 made me really miss them.”
“Getting to the point where I don’t have to wear a mask anymore to go outside. Man, I hate wearing a mask.”
Laura Levinsky is a longtime valley resident and regular columnist for Valley News Group.
We Ask Our Readers: What Are You Hopeful For in 2021?
Letter to the Editor: Thanks Valley News Groi[
Word on the Street ---------------------------------------------------From Kathleen Sterling
It goes without saying that we’re all glad that 2020 is coming to an end.
In fact, I had one good friend say she didn’t want to see any “wrap ups of the year” or “year in review stories.” She was done with everything 2020.
However, it is our tradition in the last issue of the year to recap the year in headlines.
True, COVID dominated the year’s stories, but there were plenty of other headlines, especially locally here in the valley, that merited our attention.
From Kobe to COVID and everything in between, we’ve brought you a month-by-month summary of our major headlines, photos and columns.
It’s an encapsulation of the history of the area in one particular year - one incredible, unbelievable, unfathomable year.
But we made it through - as a newspaper, as a local business, as a community.
As one friend told me, “Health is wealth.” So if you made it through this year without being touched in some way by the virus, you’re ahead of the game.
Our small, tight team of columnists, contributors and especially delivery guys - who are out on the street among ‘em -
all survived without catching the virus.
My prayer is that we all continue to be healthy in the new year and keep bringing you the news as we have for almost 40 years.
That said, I’d like to thank them personally.
First off to my daughter Katie, the editor of our Encino Enterprise paper, thanks for not only taking on the job as a fourth generation Sterling newspaper editor, but for handling brilliantly our social media and computer technology - at which I admit I’m older and therefore pretty inept.
To our longtime writers - Janey Rifkin, Health Editor, and Theda Reichman, Entertainment Editor - who’ve been with us for over 30 years - thank you for your years of input, love and columns.
To my right hand and assistant Connie Hein, who handles the office and the legal ads. I hired her because at her interview she told me she color-coded the bins in her garage for the holidays. Since I hate filing above all else - I hired her on the spot!
To all our contributors - Miri Rossitto, Laura Levinsky, Dennis Zine, Neill Simmons, Marty Cooper, Paul Davis, Kevin Pike, Conni Ponturo and Allie Priore
- this is not a one-man job. Your brilliant articles make the paper what it is.
And to our delivery crew - Robert (the guy with the hat! people say to me), Erwin and Corey - the men who deliver the paper weekly. The strength of any printed publication is getting it to the same readers, the same drop-off points, the same locations, week after week. Without them, you wouldn’t be able to pick up the paper at your usual spot, pull it off your driveway, or get it at your office.
And lastly to you, our readers. Thank you for years of following us online, grabbing a paper at the library, the market or Kaiser.
It’s for you that this team works so hard to bring you all local news of the valley.
So in this issue, follow through the news of 2020, and look forward to what we bring you in 2021!
community. Take care and keep on the mission.Jorge R. Rodriguez Deputy ChiefCommanding Officer Operations-Valley Bureau
• As we go into the new year, it is wise to remember the words of one of our sage friends, that “Money is a renewable resource. You cannot get back time, family or health, but you can somehow always figure a way to make money.” Remember what’s really important.
• Another way of saying that is “Measure wealth not by the things you have but by the things you have for which you would not take money.”
• We have a friend who overlooked his electric bill and received a last bill from them marked FINAL NOTICE. He immediately made out a check and mailed it in with the bill, which he changed to read FINALLY NOTICED.
• Who doesn’t need a good bee joke? A hive is hum, sweet hum; a swarm is a bee-seige and the queen bee is the power behind the drone. Everybody, buzz off!
• If sarcasm is “barbed ire,” why can’t a temper tantrum be named the “call of the riled?” Then, is a neurotic a self-taut person?

Demand Experience - Expect ExcellenceBuying or Selling... We Make Your Dreams Come True!
Your Personal Brand for 2021: A Boom or Bust?By Miri Rossitto
Branding does not only apply to businesses. Brands apply to people as well and as 2020 comes to close, this is the perfect time to think about your personal brand, what that brand offers and the various ways that you can use that brand to your advantage in 2021.
Your personal brand is made up of a few different elements:- Your expertise- Your influence- Your credibility- Your impact- Your uniqueness
Take each one of these elements and break them down. Write out how you and your actions are applicable to the people, places, and things under each of these topics. This practice will pretty easily shine a light on places where you might be able to do more or even where you might have so much listed, that you can start writing that book you have always wanted to write! Either way, this is a perfect place to start sketching out the foundation of your personal brand.
The next phase in building your personal brand for 2021 is to think about your “packaging.” What is your brand experience? What does your brand look like? (Think Angelyne) Feel like? (Think Tony Robbins) Sound like? (Think Morgan Freeman)
Most interestingly, if you are having trouble figuring out your brand for yourself, reach out to a handful of people that you know and trust and ask for some feedback. Ask them what words they would use to describe you. Ask them to consider the topics above and how those elements apply or do not apply to you. Now, the truth is, honest feedback can be painful. But those are growing pains! Embrace them and use that energy towards building a phenomenal personal brand!
Finally, it is important to know that, just like with business brands, consistency is imperative. For you to be successful, people must trust you. They must trust that you are an expert, that you are influential, that you are credible, that you are impactful and that you are unique. If you break that trust, it is virtually impossible to win it back and that will reflect in how they relay your brand experience to others. Take that trust seriously and you cannot lose.
2021 is a fresh start. This is your chance to take a look into exactly who you are, where you are going and where you want to end up. With a little bit of honesty, from yourself and those you trust, you will be able to craft a personal brand that will not only leave a lasting legacy, but it will
lead you to a place of happiness, confidence and success. Good luck! Take that trust seriously and you cannot lose.

workers and essential workers putting their lives on the line to keep the economy and society going are now eligible to step up to the plate for their first vaccine injection. This will be followed by the second vaccine to be administered three weeks hence.
Now a schedule has been formulated as to when all the rest of us will be eligible following recommendations made by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, followed by approval of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The second and next group to be vaccinated would include people ages 75 and older whose hospitalizations and death rates are the highest of all age groups. This group will also include teachers, factory workers, police and firefighters, grocery store workers and others who are considered essential to the functioning of the economy and at high risk of exposure to Covid-19.
A third group would follow them comprised of people between the ages of 65-74, anyone age 16 or older with a medical condition that puts them at high risk of complications of Covid-19, and other essential workers. That includes people who work in transportation and logistics, food service, water and waste water, and energy sectors.

the oldest people in the second priority group marks a shift for the ACIP which last month was considering giving priority to essential workers over the oldest generations for vaccines in early 2021. That position was based on the argument that essential workers are putting their lives on the line to keep the economy and society functioning. But some
officials, health experts, and members of the public pushed back arguing that the nation’s priority should be to protect the oldest Americans.
People 75 and older make up 8% of the population, but 25% of hospitalizations, and have the highest death rate of all age groups by far, according to the CDC. Their rates of hospitalization have also been climbing more rapidly in recent weeks than other age groups, the agency said.
Jose Romero, chair of the ACIP and secretary of health in Arkansas, said deciding how to give priority to the group was wrenching. “This is without doubt the hardest vote that I have taken in my six and a half years on the committee,” he said.

L.A Adds Travel Quarantine to Shut Down Order
Los Angeles has instituted, as of December 29, a 10- day quarantine on anyone traveling out of the region.
This is on top of the Stay-at-Home order that shut down outdoor dining an gatherings, which will stay in effect as long as the 11-county hospital ICU capacity remains below 15%.
Los Angeles is attempting to slow the spread of the disease by the thousands who traveled for the holidays. Those who travel outside Los Angeles are required to quarantine for 10 days upon return. If they experience symptoms of COVID-19, they should isolate for 10 days, remaining in isolation until they are fever-free for a full day, according to the county health department. Residents under quarantine should not leave home or receive visitors.

REAL ESTATE
By Michael BloomAccording to the California
Association of Realtors, low interest rates and the ability to work from home drove California’s November home sales to levels not seen in a decade.
508,820 residential sales occurred in November. This is up 5% from October and 26.3% from November 2019. (Statistics C.A.R. Website)
The median home price was $699,000, down 1.7% from October and up 18.5% from November 2019.
Year-to-date home sales across California were up 1.3%. The market remained robust - breaking 500,000 sales for the first time since January 2009.
C.A.R. President Dave Walsh stated, “Home buying interest is at levels that we have not seen for years, setting the stage for a stronger-than-expected comeback that fully recovered all the sales that the market lost in the first half of the year due to the pandemic. Housing supply remains an issue, however, as we will likely see a shortage of homes for sale in the near term, which will put
upward pressure on prices and dampen affordability for those who haven’t been able to take advantage of low rates.”
Sales in resort towns like Mammoth, Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead, and South Lake Tahoe skyrocketed. In Mammoth, sales were up 400% from last
Low Interest Rates and Working from Home Driving Home Sale Up
November, up 81.4% in South Lake Tahoe, up 73.9% in Big Bear and up 48.4% in Lake Arrowhead,

Woodland Hills Homeowners January Meeting to Feature Councilman
The Woodland Hills Homeowners Organization (WHHO) will host Councilman Bob Blumenfield at their January 27 meeting.
Blumenfield will discuss hot topics such as homelessness, re-imagine the LAPD, local control of development and the LAUSD plans to build affordable housing on west valley school properties.
There will be a question and answer session as part of the meeting.
According to WHHO President John Walker, many residents have already responded to the LAUSD issue, which resulted in the school district delaying the project to build at Oso,
Councilman Bob Blunenfield

By Neill SimmonsThe highlight of January is
the meteor shower named the “Quadrantids” that occurs on Saturday, January 2. Go out after 6 pm and see how many you can spot in an hour. The meteors will pop out anywhere in the whole night sky. If you get away from the city lights, three times as many meteors can be seen.
January brings four of the naked-eye planets together in the west. The largest planet, Jupiter, will be low in the west after sunset. Nearby and below Jupiter is the ringed planet, Saturn, which is very faint. Also high in the west in January is the red planet Mars. Put January 24 on your calendar as the fastest planet, Mercury, shows up in the west. It will a very bright point of light located just above the horizon and under Jupiter and Saturn. This trio will be a great sight!
January 20 and 21 will be special nights to see the planets Uranus and Mars. Mars will be easy to spot with naked eyes but good binoculars will be needed to see the giant blue planet, Uranus, which is very faint. Also on these two nights the Moon will be close to both planets.

Nighttrek Report: What to See in the January Skyputting on a dazzling show in the early morning from 4:15 am to 6:15 am. Look east.
A popular constellation comes back this January - “Orion the Hunter.” Look east at 6 pm
as it rises. By 8 pm it is upright and quite impressive. Look first at the famous left shoulder star, Betelgeuse. Right now it is a dull red. However in two months it may brighten. Every few months this giant star gets brighter and then dims. Next notice the three stars that make-up Orion’s Belt. They are three equally bright stars in a row. Next notice the stars that make the sword that hangs from the belt. Do they look fuzzy to you? That’s because they are actually a giant nebula making new stars!
Notice under Orion the brightest star as seen from Earth. This twinkling star shows three colors, red, white, and blue when it is near the eastern horizon. This
star is Sirius and is the main star of the constellation Canis Major. Fun Fact: Sirius is also called the New Year’s Eve star as it is at its highest point at the stroke of midnight.
January 28 brings the full “Wolf” Moon. Native American Indians lived with the howling hungry wolves that were prowling for something to eat. The thin crescent moon is a beautiful sight to see after dark on January 15 and 16. Make sure to take a look.
Astronomy News: A new comet has been spotted that may brighten by May 2021 so
that it can be seen with the naked eye. However, many of these hopeful comets come but do not get bright enough for us see with the naked eye.
