Lest anyon e fe e l that th e ind ivid ual c o st of maintain ing h is organ i zat i on is more than

,to a large extent

The un ivers ity i s do ing al l that can reas onab ly be expected of it,and more . The burd en

b est that was in the mind of every student
was cal l ed forth .
Doctor Gordy was a gen ius . He se emed a
Socrates return ed . His le cture s were of u n
usual forc e and e l o qu en c e . Favored in deed
were those who came under th e influenc e of
th i s great teach er . To them his words have
been a last ing insp iration . The l if e of each
who heard hi s vo ic e has been enri che d th ere
by .
8 T H E O H I O A L U M N U S
And it must n ot be over- l o oked that Do ctor
Gordy made a large c ontribution to th e l itera
ture of th e spe c ial subj e cts in h is d epartment ,his “Gordy ’s New Psycho logy h is “Pol iti ca l
H istory o f th e Un ite d States",and h is “A

thing he wrote was a mode l of persp i cu ity ,el eganc e of styl e , and l ogi cal arrangement .
Th is , taken from A Broader Elementary
Educat ion is a fa ir spe c imen of hi s sur
passingly exc e l l en t di ct-ion“This , then , is on e of th e ends whi ch e duca

thought is intr in s ica l ly good , a th ing to b e
de sired for itse lf al on e .
And th is quotati on from the same work not
on ly i s a go od example of h i s styl e , but sums
up much of h is ph i l o sophy o f educat ion“These fo ur , then , knowl e dge , d isc ipl in e , a

order to attain those ends , and the pr in c ip l e s

"
These quotation s give some faint noti on of
his wonderful ly effe ctive style . Although my
own l ife work has been in a d ifferent fi el d than
educati on , hi s wr it ings for me‘
have l ost n on e
of the ir charm , and th i s d oubtl ess i s true of
others of h is students h ere present .
Nor should it be forgotten that the fame of
Dr . Gordy brought great prest ige to Ohio Un i
versity . He was a magnet drawing to the
Un iversity many of its students . And th is at
a t ime when the Un ivers ity was j ust b eginn ing
to ari se out of th e sl ough of despond in wh ichIit l ong had b een struggling— when it was
almost without students and was sad ly lacking
fund s . Too m uch cred it can not be given to
h im and to that grand o ld man , Doctor Super ,supported , of c ourse by oth er ab l e members
of th e faculty , for starting the un iversity on
its upward road . The students h e ld Doctor
Gordy in h igh favor from th e beginn ing , an d
of the e l ect ive c ourses offere d those in h i s d e
partm en t l arge ly were cho sen .
Many years ago , I stood in Tr in ity church
yard at th e tomb of th e immortal Al exander
Hamilton , o f whom Doctor Gordy always
spoke with we l l - n igh worsh ip-ful r everen c e,
and read th is in script ion on the modest st on e:Alexander Hamilton
‘The corporation of Trin ity Church
erected th is monument in Testimony of
th eir r esp e ct for The Patri ot of in cor

mate Wisd om — and then fo l low these
propheti c word s:“Whose Tal ents andV irtues wi l l b e admired by grateful po s
ter ity Long after th is Marb l e shal l have
moul dered into dust . "
And as I read th ese word s on the marbl e
shaft whi ch even then,l e ss than a c entury
after its ere ct ion , was check ed and roughen ed
with d is integration , having already com
m en ced to moul d er into dust , I was impressed
with th e ch i sel ed prophecy and with the fact
that th e p ol it i cal phi l o sophy o f th i s i l l ustrio us
statesman which has so l arge ly shaped the
c o urse of Amer ican h i story is. more enduring
than monument of marb l e or of gran ite— that
th e great th ings of the min d have more p erma
n en ce,than obj ects formed by hands .
And so of Dr . Gordy it may be sa id that
h i s contr ibuti on to educati on wil l l ong survive
th i s tab l e t o f bronz e,yea
,that it w il l l ive
gen erations after h is very name has b een for
gotten . For the enthusiasm for l earn ing and
the l ove for truth whi ch h e awaken ed in
c o untl e ss men and women wil l b e tran smitted
in some d egre e from teach er to pup i l through
out th e c enturie s .
It i s but weak tr ibute whi ch I am paying to
the memory of th i s r emarkabl e man . Much
more c ould wel l b e sa id , an d a vo l ume co ul d
n ot exhaust the subj ect . But most of it is
wel l kn own to al l of you , much of it far better
than to me . However, mere words cannot
express the d ebt we owe to h im . Much of what
we,his former students , are h e mad e us . And
when h e passed beyond the shadows , educa
t ion l o st on e of its ab l est champions .
May thi s tabl et b e a last ing inspiration to
those who hereafter wil l l ead th e way in edu
