Ming Rise 1368 – 1644 Yuan Dynasty removed by Chinese “rebel” forces
– Led by Zhu Yuanzhang (Jooh yoo-ahn-jahng)• Took name Hong Wu when he became emperor
Ming – Means brilliant– Would rule for 300 years
Move Capital to Nanjing – to monitor Mongols(was in Tatu/Beijing)– Later moved back to Cambaluc (renamed Beijing)
• Completely rebuilt Confucian Revival Rule Modification
– No one exempt from punishments• CSE had become corrupt (people pay others to take exams)• “a gentleman could be ordered to die but should never be humiliated”
Time of Economic prosperity and peace– However, there were problems in north because of invaders– Government paid people to move to northern regions
The Great Wall and Success of The Great Wall and Success of Ming ChinaMing China
“Created” by the Ming Dynasty – (began in 1st century BCE during
Qin )– In disrepair
Throughout late 15th and 16th Century
100,000s of workers 1,500 miles
– The Ming repaired it and added over 600 miles
– 33 – 49 feet high– Watch Towers, Living Quarters,
Signal Towers Intent
– Wanted to eliminate Mongol and other foreign influence
Silk, textile, tea, and porcelain production up– People had excess $ and
desire for these goods– Also caused trade to go up
Shanghai and Guangzhou– Main trade cities– Merchants and artisans
became very rich Entertainment and
Learning– More of a desire for both– Emperor established
institutions for furthering both of these
Exploration under the Exploration under the MingMing
Ming Navy– Funded by early emperors– Junks – massive ships
Chinese Naval Expeditions:1405 – 1433– Led by Zheng He– Purpose: To glorify Chinese accomplishments and NOT
Expansion or not really trade– 7 expeditions– Brought back exotic animals
Expeditions lost favor– Expensive and later emperors didn’t like– Wanted to focus on military forces for the North– Zheng He returned and leaned expeditions were over– “All” records of expeditions were destroyed
Ming Fall MING FALL Navy and coastal defenses ineffective
– Coast looted by pirates Ineffective rulers
– Imperial city and court opulence• Rulers more focused on themselves and not ruling
– Concubines– Corrupt eunuchs
Famine Manchu invaders from the north
– Rebel forces (Manchu led) storm Forbidden City Emperor so sheltered that knew not of this
– He and his family commit suicide Manchu established Qing
