In1627 there w as a fa i l u re o f t he ha rv es t f r omd r o u g h t . I t w a s t h e y o u n g h e a d m a n ' s dutyto collect th e l a n d tax of his village. Th ef a r m e r s c o u l d n o t pay , b u t t he au tho r i t i e sg r a n t e d n o r em i s s i o n to the collector. H espen t a l l h i s o w n m o n e y an d b o r r o w e d m o r e ,b u t still c o u l d n o t f r e e h i m se l f .     I n t h e f ir s t e n c o u n t e r t h e I m p e r i a l i s tt r o o p s b o r e d o w n th e e n e m y , w h o a r e sa idh o w e v e r t o h a v e b e e n m e r e l y th e f e e b le s ta n d m o s t w o r t h l e s s o f t h e i r t r o o p s , p u r -posely p laced in f r o n t . S u n Fu-t'ing p r e s -s e d on t i l l h e f o u n d h i m s e l f in f r o n t o f t h e "e a r t h - w o r k s , b e h i n d w h i c h l a y t h e m a i nbody o f the rebels. T h r e e d a y s o f h e a v y rainp r e v e n t e d th e t r a n s p o r t of h i s p r o v i s i o n s . Al i ne o f carts, which stre tched half across th epro v i n c e , w a s s t r u g g l i n g i n t he d e e p m u d ,b u t n o n e o r a lm o s t n o n e r e a c h e d th e u n f o r -t u n a t e a r m y . T h e m e n w e r e s t a r v i n g , b u tth e Ge ne ra l da re d n o t retreat t o t h e n e i g h -bou rhood of his supplies. For such a m o v e -m e n t i n t he f ace o f t he e n e m y m u s t i n s t a n -t a n e o u s l y b e c o m e a hop e le ss rout.

    The victorious rebel rested at Si-an Fatill the end of the year. In the m e a n t i m ehi s t roop s comp le te d the su b ju ga t ion o fthe province, and commenced over-running
