A Welcome by our Senior Vice President, Shawn Jenkins
“WestCare Family,
Welcome to the
WestCare California
Loop newsletter! I hope
that enjoy reading about
all that our various
programs have been up
to in the months of
March and April!
Much like how we provide a variety of
services to those that we serve, we pride
ourselves in providing a variety of ways for
our staff to get involved with activities outside
of their ordinary duties including the planning
of internal and external events. A key
component of this is our internal committees!
We believe in promoting wellness, awareness
and togetherness amongst our WestCare
family and have several committees in place to
do just that!
One such committee is our Cultural Diversity
Committee, which meets to plan events,
presentations and potlucks that promote
awareness of the various cultural backgrounds
that comprise not only our staff, but the
communities in which we serve! Together,
they provide our staff a glimpse of how
diverse our WestCare California family is! If
you would like to join this committee and
have permission from your supervisor, please
contact lenora.phillips@westcare.com!
Next up, we have our LGBTQ Awareness and
Advisory Council, a national group comprised
of staff from not just California, but many of
the states in which WestCare serves!
Together, they brainstorm and discuss
strategies to promote inclusion within our

programs for everyone regardless of
orientation including our staff, interns,
volunteers and those that we serve! On top of
this, they also organize internal awareness
campaigns to be shared throughout all of
WestCare such as National LGBT Health
Awareness Week, observed this past March. If
you would like to get involved and have
permission from your supervisor, please
contact lgbtqcouncil@westcare.com!
Last but not least, I would like to discuss our
Health and Wellness Committee! This
committee meets to organize internal
awareness campaigns that promote various
forms of wellness include healthy eating and
dieting, preventive measures for common
health conditions, the practice of self-care,
mental wellness and more! On top of this,
they organize events such as blood drives for
local blood banks and state-wide challenges
for our staff including weight-loss challenges
and stepathons! If you would like to join this
committee and have permission from your
supervisor, please contact

On behalf of our various committees and the

take part and promote togetherness,

to Uplifting the Human Spirit of your fellow
staff, the communities in which we operate
and those that we serve knows no bounds!

At the most recent
Fresno Housing
Authority all staff
meeting, we were
presented with the
2018 Community
Partner of the Year
award for the variety of
services that we offer, but specifically for our service to
those experiencing or at risk of homelessness as well as
our leadership in and contributions to the Fresno Madera
Continuum of Care (FMCoC)!
Our Senior Vice President
and FMCoC Chair, Shawn
Jenkins, accepted this
cherished award. While we
are both honored and
humbled to receive this
recognition, there is still much
work to do and we look
forward to our continued
collaboration with our fellow
community partners, including
the Fresno Housing Authority! Looking ahead, we are
anticipating the upcoming May 11th opening of
Renaissance at Parc Grove Commons, a joint project with
the Fresno Housing Authority, WestCare California and
the VA Hospital which will provide housing
for homeless and disabled Veterans in Fresno County!

“You”: A Poem by Tony (SUDT Program
Participant at Sierra Conservation Center)
“When hope no longer seems to be
An option within to reach
Challenge yourself to grow within
And practice what we teach
Promoting, molding better men
By facing what is past
Attempting to instill within
Good conduct that will last
Sierra Conservation Center
A place to start brand new
But honestly, it’s not the where
The change depends on YOU”

4/18: Sacred Streets Training
We attended the Sacred Streets
training for faith-based
organizations on homelessness
held at Bitwise Industries in
Fresno and presented on the
FMCoC as well as our outreach
efforts and the use of the
Coordinated Entry System
(CES). Other speakers included
Fresno Mayor, Lee Brand and
Barbara Poppe, former
Executive Director of the
United States Interagency
Council on Homelessness
(USICH). Through continued
collaboration with fellow
organizations and members of local, state and federal
government, we hope to make strides in our outreach,
develop new strategies, gain more support and continue
to lead the charge in our local efforts.
4/24 - 26: SOAR Leadership Academy
We were honored to have
representation on behalf of both
WestCare California and the FMCoC
at the SOAR Leadership Academy
in Boston, MA sponsored by SAMHSA!
SOAR (SSI/SSDI Outreach, Access and
Recovery) is a model for assisting
individuals who are experiencing or are
at risk of homelessness and have a serious mental illness,
co-occurring substance use disorder or other physical
disabilities to apply for SSI and SSDI. With the many
people in our community experiencing homelessness with
disabling conditions, we are excited about implementing,
growing and sustaining SOAR for the FMCoC for
disability advocacy! We would also like to thank our
Director of Housing Services, Mary Ann Knoy and our
Community Coordinator, Maria Rodriguez, for putting in
countless hours of
online coursework
before this event and
in-person training at
this event in order to
receive their SOAR
certification!

Women’s Health Month Discussion:
What is Menopause? By Nakesha Lee, Data Entry, STOP Area 3
Women’s health is
such a broad
category and we have
touched on many
topics relating to
wellness, so I decided to share and hope to answer some
questions regarding menopause and its effects. Every
woman deserves the best healthcare. Our needs tend to
change at different stages of life. One may be preparing
for pregnancy, while another one may be going through
menopause or just simply looking for answers to health
queries. Whatever stage you are at and whatever your
needs are, one must aim to empower themselves to
understand how to take control of their own health.
Menopause is a natural cessation or stopping of a
woman’s menstrual cycle and marks the end of fertility.
Most women usually begin this stage of life between the
ages of 45 to 55 years of age. This is when the body
begins to undergo several changes in response to lower
levels of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, follicle-
stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone. Some
women go through menopause without any complications
or unpleasant symptoms while others experience
symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, weight gain
and flushing. These symptoms can continue for four or
more years after menopause. Other more common
symptoms may include:
*Depression *Memory Problems
*Anxiety *Headaches
Every woman’s menopause experience is unique.
Symptoms are usually more severe when menopause
occurs suddenly or over a shorter period. Certain lifestyle
choices like smoking tend to increase the severity and
duration of symptoms. There are women’s health
providers that specialize in menopause management.
Women, please remember anytime you are experiencing
any signs or symptoms that are making daily living difficult,
please consult with your doctor so they can monitor your
health and answer any questions you may have. Here is a

“Paris! I really love art and it was an opportunity to see
the Mona Lisa. I actually thought it was going to be a lot
bigger than it was, but I thank God that I had an oppor-
tunity to go see all the fine artwork in Paris. We had
three days, but couldn't see it all!”
