LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Is public losing confidence in banks?Sir, Bank scams are coming out one after the
other. A number of banks have reported unre-coverable loans worth crores.
On the one hand, govt. is pushing for digitiza-tion, and on the other, public is beginning to losefaith in banks.
An example is the scam involving theChennai-based Kanishk Gold Pvt. Ltd. whichallegedly cheated a consortium of 14 banks tothe tune of Rs. 824 crores.
It was stated that the lead bank, State Bankof India, while seeking the help of the CentralBureau of Investigation to investigate, hadsaid in the letter that the jewellers had manipu-lated the accounts and inflated the gold price incollusion with the auditors. It was reportedthat the jewellers had defaulted on their loanrepayments as far back as in March 2017 andstopped payments to all banks from April
2017. The lead bank further stated that manyother frauds in inventory, accounting and di-version of funds were detected.
Why did not the lead bank take action in April2017 itself? It would have prevented the own-ers from fleeing the country. I doubt if the bankofficials regularly visited the premises of thejewellers to check the inventory and valuationas is the norm?
When daily gold prizes are listed in the publicdomain, how come the bankers did not find outthat the borrowers had inflated the valuation.Even considering that the auditors are capableof window-dressing, why did not they re-checkthe accounts through an internal auditor?
In public interest, the lending spree by theprivate and public sector banks must stop andthey should re-visit all cases where they haveprovided huge loans. K. Harihar, T. Nagar.
LPG prices, subsidy listed on websiteof oil companies
Sir, This has reference to the letter ‘Subsidyamount not mentioned in LPG bill’ publishedlast week. The writer suggested that the sub-sidy amount should be mentioned in the bill. Ibeg to differ with him on this.
The domestic LPG price changes everymonth and this finds mention in the websitesof all oil companies. The price for March for thenon-subsidized LPG in Chennai is Rs. 699.50and of the subsidized LPG Rs. 481.21. There-fore, the net subsidy amount is Rs. 218.29 andnot Rs. 229 as mentioned in the letter. Further, every computerized bill of the distributors in-dicates the subsidy amount. If the distributorprovides a hand-written bill, it is for the writerto take up the issue with the distributor and therelevant oil company.
Yet another reader had stated that LPGsubsidy should be linked to only one bankaccount. While I endorse his view, if one hasmore than one bank account, and he/she linksthe Aadhaar with all these accounts, it lookslike, as per the dynamics of Aadhaar, the lastlinked bank account gets reckoned for credit-ing the subsidy amount. V. S. Jayaraman, 31,Motilal Street, T. Nagar
Nandanam Extn.- Lotus Colonystretch in bad condition.
Sir, The condition of roads in many parts ofthe city is turning from bad to worse. The roadin Lotus Colony-Nandanam Main Road stretchwas dug a year back. No work has been carriedout till date, nor has the road been relaid.
Now earth and stones have been dumped onthe road margins, further narrowing the road. The traffic on this narrow road is quite heavyand crossing has become a nightmare.
If there are no plans to carry out any workimmediately, why is the Corporation and itsother civic departments digging the road andmaking life difficult for the public? I appeal tothe officials concerned to relay the road imme-diately. T. Santhanam, T. Nagar
Subsidy credited to non-designatedaccount
Sir, This has reference to T. Viswanathan’sletter on crediting of LPG subsidy published inMarch 18-23 issue. I had been receiving theLPG subsidy in my designated SB accountlinked to my Aadhaar number.
Recently, I updated Aadhaar for my SBaccount with another bank, but did not desig-nate it for receiving any subsidy. But to mysurprise, the next LPG subsidy got credited tothe non-designated account which I don’t oper-ate that regularly.
So what Vishwanathan mentioned in hisletter is absolutely correct. The govt. shouldensure that all subsidies are credited only tothe bank account designated by the benefi-ciary to prevent problems for the accountholder. N. Vijayaraghavan, 18th AvenueAshok Nagar
Toilets in Police Quarters Lane notmaintained properly
Sir, There are two urinals in Police QuartersLane, beside T. Nagar Bus Stand. The urinalsare in a very bad and unhygienic condition.
There is no water supply and the whole placereeks of urine smell. There is no privacy for theuser, as the doors do not close properly.
I appeal to the Corporation to remove theurinals or repair and maintain themproperly. V. S. Narayanaswamy, MotilalStreet, T. Nagar
Humanitarian service by SISir, We, the residents of K. V. Colony, West Mambalam, would like
to laud the good service rendered by the officials of R3, Ashok Nagarpolice station, particularly Rajaram (Sub-Inspector) recently.
A 8-year-old boy accidentally fell down from the first floor of hisresidence on March 17 and died from the fall without responding totreatment in the hospital. The father of the deceased child, a temporaryemployee in Postal Dept., is managing his family of 5 members withlimited resources. The death, being due to accident, was reported to thepolice. Sub-Inspector Rajaram arrived at the hospital immediately, which was around midnight and, on realizing the monetary constraints
of the family, requested the hospital authorities to offer maximum concession. The SI alsohelped to complete the post mortem formalities without any hassle. He also took steps toarrange for freezer box, mortuary van, and also arranged financial assistance from somecharitable trusts known to him. We were immensely moved by the humanitarian efforts ofRajaram and his noble approach in handling the emotional situation of the bereaved family.K. V. Colony residents, West Mambalam
