Pasteur discovered the cause of disease

Pasteur proved that yeast caused sugars to ferment into alcohol. He also found that wine went sour because of rod-like microbes.Microbes causing the spoilage of food became known as the Germ Theory of DiseaseHis work led to the use of Pasteurisation to reduce food spoilage

Pasteur also disproved the theory of Spontaneous Generationwith his famous swan-neck flask experiment.

Further support for Pasteur’s Germ Theory was when RobertKoch isolated the Anthrax bacteria and showed that it causedthe Anthrax disease in cattle. Pasteur then developed a vaccine for Anthrax.

Robert Koch(1843 – 1910)

Robert KochKoch developed techniques for:

Using Pasteur’s Germ Theory, Koch was able to isolateAnthrax bacilli as the cause of Anthrax in cattle.
