Just a few statisticsIn March 2008 the Pew Internet and

American Life Project released the results of a study of the Mobile Web

In April Connecticut Legal Services issued report of client surveys, showing similar usage trends

Things are Changing 62% of all Americans are part of a wireless,

mobile population that participates in digital activities away from home or work.

58% of adult Americans have used a cell phone or personal digital assistant (PDA) to do at least one of ten mobile non-voice data activities

It’s not just the white middle class

African Americans and English-speaking Latinos are more likely than white Americans to use non-voice data applications on their cell phones.

Cell phones are in widespread use

in all segments of the American population:

84% of English-speaking Hispanics have cell phones.

74% of white Americans have cell phones. 71% of black Americans have cell phones.

Among those who have cell phones:

eighteen percent of white Americans, twenty-two percent of Hispanics and twenty-seven percent of black Americans

have used them to access the internet for information.

Low-income users are significant % Within the population of people who have

accessed digital data or tools on the go, twenty-four percent have household incomes of $25,000 annually or less.

April 2008 Connecticut Legal Services Report

51% of callers had access to a computer.42% of callers had internet access.35% of callers had an e-mail account, and 31%

check e-mail at least once a week.58% of callers had a cell phone.32% of callers use text messaging from a cell

phone.

“Sprint, Clearwire Join for WiMax Venture” PC World - 5/7/08 WiFi-like service for mobile broadband $3 billion from Google, Intel, and several

cable operators service to120 to 140 million people by 2010

AT&T and Verizon LTE (Long Term Evolution), also by 2010

What does the mobile web look like?

Surely LSC does better

How about the ABA

We could come up with excuses So, Pine Tree, LSC and the ABA are complex

sites. We can’t expect them to work well on a cell phone.

Complex sites can work well

A little work can improve things
