LIONS LOOKING OUT FOR

OUR LOCALS

Over the weekend of the 23rd & 24th of June, Maitland & District Lions

Club played host to the Lions Skin Cancer Screening Unit.

The unit was parked at the Maitland Information Centre car park and

over 150 locals and visitors were screened with 3 examination rooms

been used to carry out full body screening. The service provided was

a screening service only. It was made very clear to all those who were

screened that it is their personal responsibility to follow up any

identified skin cancer issue with their own doctor for diagnosis and

treatment. The local Lions provided a BBQ with tea and coffee.

They also ran a raffle and sold their famous Christmas cakes.

The Mobile Unit is now heading

for Loxton, the Barossa and

Kangaroo Island.

The Lions greatly appreciate all

of the support and assistance

from the local community.

THEY HEARD ME SCREAM

At the age of sixty-seven years, and after three serious back operations, Rod

Gregory was forced off the farm into retirement.

In his youth he’d been a shearer for two decades, and then for the last thirteen

years he’d been a viticulturist with his own vineyard. After fifty-three years as an

active mixed farmer, retirement was a dirty word.

After much encouragement from the family, Rod reluctantly decided to write

short stories of his farming days. This venture mysteriously found its way into

completing a ten-week comedy course, which changed Rod’s life completely.

As they say, “as one door closes, another one opens.”

After only twelve months as a performing comedian, Rod auditioned for

Australia’s Got Talent, hoping for just two minutes on national TV. Instead, he

came fourth in the 2011 Grand Finale of Australia’s Got Talent. His career

flourished, and Rod performed over seven hundred and fifty mostly sold-out shows

to appreciative audiences all over Australia. In 2016 he performed for a month in

Scotland at Edinburgh Festival; an experience to treasure.

Mid-2017, at the age of seventy-four, Rod retired from comedy and took up the

career of writing.

Now seventy-five years old, Rod lives in Maitland, a small country town in South

Australia. He’s been married to Toni for fifty-three years, and has two daughters,

Letitia and Ketrice, and four beautiful grandchildren: Phoebe, Frazer, Jayden and

Benita. He is also enjoying the recent addition of a great grandson, Rory.

Rod is thriving with his new career, which proves you are never too old to have a

go.

They Heard Me Scream is a vivid and down-

to-earth tale of a boy growing to be a man in

prehistoric Australia. After a failed initiation

ceremony Daku is cast out into the world. But

far from languishing, Daku’s joie de vivre and

unassuming stubbornness win him a new fam-

ily and adventures galore.

In this novel, Rod Gregory contrasts the gritty

reality of survival against honed humour, and

works to highlight the humanity of Daku and

his people. Love, hate, romance, betrayal,

parenthood and humiliation: They Heard Me

Scream imagines a portrait of prehistoric

Australian life.

Barley Stacks Wines Wins at the 2018 Yorke

Peninsula Tourism Awards Barley Stacks Wines has been awarded the best Specialised Tourism Service at

the2018 Yorke Peninsula Tourism Awards.

The awards were held on Friday the 22nd of June and recognise businesses for

their passion, hard work and commitment to Yorke Peninsula's tourism industry.

Barley Stacks Wines was the winner of the Specialised Tourism Service category

which recognises the outstanding delivery of specialised tourism services that

enhance the visitor experience and integrate with other tourism products.

In 2017 Barley Stacks Wines had over 4000 people visit their cellar door from all

over the country as well as overseas which is a 100% increase in visitors from three

years before.

This is the second entry for Barley Stacks Wines. They first entered in 2016 and

were successful in being awarded Bronze in the same category.

Lyall Schulz, Owner/Managing Director of Barley Stacks Wines said it was very

exciting to be awarded the winner for that category on the night.

The Yorke Peninsula Tourism Awards are run every two years with a lot of planning

going into the night. Brooke Liebelt and Nicole Page of Yorke Peninsula Tourism

spend months organising and planning the awards, as well as helping promote

the Yorke Peninsula in general.

Make sure to visit Barley Stacks Wines and check out their website

www.barleystackswines.com to keep up to date with everything happening at

the winery.

MAITLAND MARKETS How are you coping with the cold weather? The market has a good supply of

beanies, scarves, slippers and rugs to keep the family warm. We would like to

thank Peter Pawelski for printing our rosters for the past, at least, ten years as part

of his contribution to the community. Next month we will have completed 12

years as Maitland Markets in its present form.

The market has given beanies and scarves to some residents of

Chappell Wing at the hospital so they can go outside and walk

in the cold weather. We hope you are warmer when you go

out.

My thanks to all my volunteers who help keep the market a

happy place to visit.

Review - Maitland Lutheran School - 2018 Musical -

The Amazing Adventures of Superstan

It is always a joy to watch talented youngsters on stage but when those young performers exude

enthusiasm, energy and commitment to their roles it raises the show far above an audience’s

expectations. The Maitland Lutheran School staged the entertaining and very funny musical “The

Amazing Adventures of Superstan” over two nights last week. This production is from the stable

of scripts for school-age children by Craig Hawes which are noted for their comical one-liners,

puns, gags and overall hilarity.

With excellent direction from Rebecca Davey the large cast of 42, supported by a chorus of

children from classes Reception through 5/6, strutted their stuff in a tight, pacy and well-

rehearsed production that was also colourful and imaginative. Scott Carson presided over the

musical direction which ensured that the foot-tapping musical numbers were tuneful and audible

and the backup choir of Years 4/5/6 children provided wonderful support to the onstage players.

Choreography was simple but well rehearsed with a special mention to students Tessa Moloney

and Charlotte Dunstan who choreographed two of the pieces.

Stanley Marvel (played by Douglas Stock) is well recognised by all as the ’clumsiest clot in

Megaville’. However, unbeknownst to all the local folk (except his sidekick and friend DC,

played by Kirralee Field and his Gran, played by Sian Herrmann and her crinkly, crony buddies

Frank (Ellie Oster), Gloria (Mattea Whitelaw), Bernice (Bella Kohlhagen) and Georgie (Hannah

Slade). He has an alter-ego, Superstan (played by Patrik Morris) a caped crusader fighting for

truth, freedom and justice in his fantastic, elastic, anti-gravity underpants. Superstan goes head to

head against the evil Candy King (Tom Robinson-Gourdie), a pair of comic villains, Curly and

Wurly (Charlotte Dunstan and Amber Germein), 4 crazy scientists (Lydia Oster, Olive Bittner,

Charlote Liebelt and Olivia Fazzari) a batallion of minions and a green-clad Bogeyman (Gabriel

Fazzari) not only saving the day for the citizens of Megaville but finding his long lost grandfather

along the way.

What superhero story would be complete without a healine-chasing newspaper editor (Nicholas

Thomas) and his cub reporters (Iesha Wanganeen, Lucy Koch and Harry Kakoschke) as well as

some starstruck TV reporters (Tessa Moloney and Xavier Smith), an inept and corrupt Mayor

(Aidan Kakoschke) and his deputy (Charlotte Linke), some Marines and 4 placard-waving

confectionaries?

The characterisations were larger than life and well sustained throughout the production. Of

particular note were the performances of Douglas Stock, Kirralee Field, Sian Hermann, Patrik

Morris, Charlotte Dunstan, Amber Germein and Tom Robinson-Gourdie.

School productions can sometimes be mired by technical inadequacies. However, this was not

the case with this show. The sound quality was excellent which meant that every line was audible

and the delivery of the sound effects was spot on. The scene changes (which also had to include

radio mike transfers between cast members) were quick and efficient. In fact I have never seen a

set crew run on and off stage quite as fast as school captain Hazel Bittner and her pals! Mention

also need to be made of the glorious set and brilliant costumes.

Overall, this was a wonderful production, not just entertaining but also a fabulous showcase of the

talent within the school. Congratulations to all involved and I look forward to their future

productions.

Cori beats the odds to land dream job Courage and teamwork are not always found on the playing field, as shown by the remarkable story of Cori Roberts. Earlier this year, Cori, 23, and his 18-year-old brother became homeless, a frightening situation made even more difficult by Cori’s intellectual disability that severely limited his options for finding work. But what could so easily have been a tale of despair has turned into something inspiring by Cori’s courage and determination, and the support of Baptist Care, Maxima and car dealer Eblen Suburu. After helping Cori and his brother find short-term accommodation, workers at Baptist Care were impressed by Cori’s desire to find employment so they contacted Maxima’s Mitchell Park office. Cori’s Employment Consultant, Jodine Taylor, said that when Maxima talked with Cori to find out about his skills and interests they soon learned he was keen on working with cars. “That immediately gave me an idea because I knew that Subaru car dealer Peter Eblen was very passionate about helping disadvantaged people in the local community. When I organised a formal meeting to discuss the support that Maxima provided and who we help, he was very eager to get on board.” “Peter passed the baton to Dario Tonon at Eblen Collision Repairs at Somerton Park. He was also very enthusiastic and immediately gave Cori some trial shifts as a car cleaner. They were so impressed by his work ethic. They absolutely loved him.” The trial shifts led to regular work one day a week, with lots of support from Jodine along the way, including organising clothing and other basic items and even driving Cori to work when his own car was off the road. Dario said he was impressed with Cori right from the start. “He would follow instruction and had the right attitude to learn, so when one of our Panel Beaters left, we offered Cori full-time work assisting our tradespeople in the workshop. As long as Cori is willing to learn new skills, I am happy to teach him. He is valued by all the staff in the workshop.” Jodine continues to support and mentor Cori and is now working to towards his application as an apprentice at Eblens. Jodine said Cori’s life has changed remarkably. “When we first came into contact with Cori, he didn’t even have much in regard to clothing, and he’s not one to ask for help. In fact, he told me that he and his brother had only one pair of socks between them. So from being at that point to now earning more money than he ever thought possible — he’s doing

really well.” Cori said he had always wanted to work on cars and he loved his job at Eblens. “I want to do well here to reach my goal of buying my own house.”

Maitland & Districts Garden Club What a great meeting it was in May with so much diversity. The new format of the meeting

saw the business part over in half an hour (thank you management committee) and then so

many opportunities for sharing. An unbelievable number of cuts were on display for the

competition and now having the task for judging split into three sections (which some

simple guidelines) saw Vivienne Illman, Pat Stock & Kath Mason enjoying the task. The

Garden “Show & Tell” segment had Pauline Whitehead displaying a wreath of leaves of a

Pony Tail plant; a Nature made wreath of potted plant roots and her Princess Dianna

memorial collection of Coral and shells from Darwin. Pat Stock held the attention of

members by discussing Tamarillo’s – tree tomatoes – and brought some to show and spoke

of the importance of picking them when they are ripe. Then just before lunch a very proud

and excited great grandmother showed a very special Teddy Bear that she had bought for

her latest grandchild – well done Kath and the happiness you shared was infectious.

Following lunch two Garden rooms were visited and sincere appreciation to Margaret &

Cherie for providing this opportunity. Both areas set the scene for “relaxation & time out”

and attendees agreed that the addition of the paper, good book or just sitting and putting

ones feet would be so easy to do! The afternoon closed with the serving of afternoon tea at

Cherie’s – a surprise and very welcomed – Thank you Cherie. Whilst this Club is small in

numbers the wealth of knowledge of several members is greatly appreciated and now with

the format of increased available time in meetings when held at the National Trust venue,

more sharing will be able to take place. June meeting will see members at The National

Trust at 9.30am to travel to Yvonne & Vic Jones at Port Vincent. Please remember to bring

your lunch and that there is no competition on this day. African violet reporting.

U3AYP The AGM will be held on Monday 30th July at 10.00am in the

Maitland Uniting church meeting room starting with morning tea.

With some 130 financial members from all over the Peninsula

Maitland is seen as the most convenient town to hold this event.

Whilst it is the first time since 2004 the AGM is being held in a current financial

year (normally held in May) it will still be a celebration with show casing of some

of the previous courses along with the introduction of a couple of potential new

ones. One of these comes under the heading of Flora and Fauna and Wendy

Loveridge is to be commended for the amount of research she has undertaken

in putting together a list of presenters. Thoughts are if enough members indicate

their interest (remember U3AYP is member owned, member driven) a session will

be held in Kadina/Wallaroo and another in Minlaton. With this in mind two

organisers will be needed and Hans Ruis has kindly put up his hand to be one of

these. Lynden Burman also has two other potential courses for viewing and

discussion. Included in the show casing will also be evidence of some other

courses that have been held. Sue Williams has prepared a power point

presentation that will be run at the commencement of the meeting, depicting

some of the courses over the last year. Attendees will be able to see that once

again the objectives of the organisation have been met in supporting members

physical, mental and social well being in very friendly low key settings.

By request several courses have been repeated this year and one such course

was the return of RAA (Kadina & Minlaton) and the interactive white board

allowed attendees to check out their knowledge of road rules and some other

situations pertaining to driving. Once again excellent positive feedback from

participants.

Within the formal AGM agenda will be highlights relating to activities and the

Photography group (formerly known as Photoshoot) will share some of their

achievements since this course was revamped late last year (some people may

recall a photo in the Country Times showing that this course has more men than

women on many occasions). Guest speaker(s) this year will be from the Police

department and they look forward to questions from the audience. As always

this meeting is open to anyone who may like to come and hear more about

U3AYP.Following the meeting an invitation is extended to anyone who may like

to join together for lunch at the Maitland Hotel (own expense) to conclude

what is planned to be a most interesting morning out for one and all. In closing

an email was received last week indicating “I’m back” – went on to say” I used

to belong to U3AYP before I left YP however I wish to re-join please where can I

get a registration form?” Of course one has been sent – but these are available

from Council offices, libraries and via the website –

www.u3ayp@wordpress.com.
