PROJECT ENGLISH FOR ALL (EFA)
A. IntroductionFirst of all, we would like to say ‘Thank You’ to God, for giving us a chance to
make this report as our responsibility, our beloved EFA volunteers, where they have given their times to participate their selves in this project, and our project coordinator, Africelli for monitoring, advising, evaluating us where we need some advices for a success of this project.
We both, Ferry Fhrans Valentinus and Firda Muthia Elsanty as the captain and co-captain of this project are really happy to have this project. We really loved this project where we try to teach needed children about English, even our experiences when we both were in United States. We do recognize all tuition and experience the coordinator of IYLP has given to us is so useful to support this project. Thereafter, we are happier to see all our volunteers work well as what we have planned, and Africelli when he monitored us. EFA is not a project we planned when we arrived at Batam, but a mini-project we’ve planned when we were still in United States. We feel this project is not a mini-project, but the spectacular, even the biggest project we have had in our life. Even, volunteers’ participation makes it more interesting.
EFA stands for English For All, firstly planned to teach in one place only. But after we saw children’s enthusiasms, we thought to teach in one more place, it means we would teach in two places. We were so worried if we don’t have any time to control these two places. But after we tried, we felt it’s going fine, nothing worried, so we decided to teach needed children in two places.
It was great to have EFA in our life !!!!
a. Background
1. Name of Project : EFA – English For All2. Brief Description :
In carrying a project out with theme of social which is an obligation has to be done after we have got tuition and experiences when we were in United States, sponsored by U.S Department and Legacy International, we decided to make a social project where it works on educational system. Because of it, we committed to choose English as the basic material of the project, where it is a vital need in this period, such as looking for job vacancy, communication, especially in this city, where it borders closely to Singapore, so it does mean that understanding, using, and speaking English is absolutely necessary.
4
English is one of International languages, accepted and even used by people in the world wide in communicating at all aspects of their life. It is not needed when someone wants to go overseas or wishing to work at International Relationship only, but it has to be studied by all ages. The problem is not all children in Batam can get feeling of what amazing English is, such as needed children or children who have no money enough to have English course. Even though, they are skilled and inquisitive of learning English. That’s the reason why we make this project which names “ENGLISH FOR ALL” where we provide free English class for them and purposes to make them to be skilled as the next generation of INDONESIA. So, they have motivation and probability to reach their wishes.
b. Statement of Needs
English is the most important qualification in the world wide. The qualification is including economic field, something for finding a job, sailing, trade, information and communication, and another cases. But, English skills have not been in people’s life yet; even it can’t be learnt by all people, such as poor, where they don’t have money enough. Not only for English course, sometimes it’s too difficult for them paying tuition to their school, so they can’t go to school anymore. That’s a big problem, even the biggest problem that needs to be solved in our city.
Because of that, public needs of English can be filled through this programme. These needs include knowledge of English skills through this project. Previous, this project also gives another needs and goals, such as:
1. Need of communication globally This one is the basic need. Most of poor (needed) children feel scared of trying to speak English even though it’s a simple word. That’s why we here guide and teach so they are more confidence and brave to speak English, not to be shy anymore. This means they finally know how important English in their life.
2. To erase ideas who say that English is not important enough Many ideas say that English in Indonesia is not important enough to learn because in Indonesia, we speak our Native Language, Bahasa Indonesia each other, so communicating with someone by speaking in Bahasa Indonesia, considered fine. Through this project, we both would like to erase the ideas who say so, because as our point of view, it only brings us into bad effects.
3. To make and build confidence in children’s selves No confidence is one of the biggest problems. We sometimes see this problem when we see someone’s trying to speak English. Being shy, scared of
5
mispronounce, shy to ask something will make our knowledge become narrow. Actually, from zero, we have to try until we’re being able to.
c. Project Approach First, we made some advertisements by designing brochures, purposed to
gain volunteers to teach the needed children. Then, we gathered to discuss about what we would teach them. We also
discuss about the seperation of members into groups. Began to make some copies for English moduls (books) and announced
members to make a power point every time they taught. This functioned to make their ideas more developed.
We went to Rumah Singgah, as the place we were going to teach. Thereafter, we saw their ages considered teenagers so we thought again to make new English moduls. But, there’s a suggestion to keep going teach children at another places. So we looked for it, and found it. Its name was Yayasan Al-Hidayah.
So every wednesday, we went to Yayasan Al-Hidayah and every Saturday we went to Rumah Singgah.
Next, we taught how this project could be more interesting, so we decided to buy gifts for any one who could answer questions from tutors.
To see and measure how good they are, understand and concepting what they have learnt so we decided to make test for them.
Finally, we celebrated graduation party as they had tests.
B. Goals and ObjectivesGoals:
a. To create a bright future for the next generation by teaching them as the tutor and determining in selves to work and study harder than before. It will be a challenge to make them taking care of studying English as the International Language, especially needed children.
b. To give some Basic English skills in all aspects, build confidence, and being more curious.
c. To give some explanation about what English is actually. It can make the definition of English sturdier that it’s important to learn and study for everyone.
Objectives:
a. To make 2 free English classes twice a week in 2 months. b. To teach at least 15 needed children about everything which is considered as
the basic things in English.
6
c. To provide at least 30 English books from volunteers and another social organization.
d. To provide 20 stationeries e. To make fun and simple competitions in the final day of our project such as,
scrabble, hangman, spelling, and etc. f. To make a graduation party in final day. g. To celebrate celebration party for the success of this project.
Documentation :
It will be collected in photos, videos from beginning until final day of this project. This documentation will be published through newspaper article and we will summary into a clipping, where it will be systematic, and Power points as the evidence of teaching-method-materials.
Evaluation :
1. Reviewing the goals of the project. This project will be finished if we are successful to create bright future in their life, and persuade them being more challenged to take care of English.
2. Criteria of Successa. Successful to gain 10 volunteers or more b. Successful to gain the donation worthy minimal 1 million rupiah c. Successful to persuade needed children to attend every class (minimal 80%) d. Successful to be supported by school e. Successful to get good point for children f. Successful to be published minimal 1 newspaperg. Successful to gain 20 needed children as the studentsh. Successful to gain 20 used books
3. Writing reportWe will make a report systematically in the end of this project, completed and added with power points and documentations.
7
C.Project OverviewActually, EFA’s progress runs well. This is because of corporation of each
team. If it’s their turn to teach, they had prepared the power point which is same with the theme they were going to teach. This makes we felt happy every time we were on EFA. We also didn’t forget to point someone being a cameraman, to take photos where it was good event. When they were studying, he/she did it. Even, when the tutors were teaching, she/he did it. Not only that, it became fun when we made some games such as musical chair, Simon says “......”, and etc so they couldn’t be boring anytime, and to make it more interesting, every winner of each game, will be given some gifts. When every class was started to begin, we didn’t forget to ask materials they learnt a week ago. This is for refreshing their minds, so they couldn’t forget anything. At the final day, we made a test for them, to measure how their abilities in English, how far they know and learnt what we had taught them. After it finished, we saw they got satisfied points, 2 children couldn’t pass it because they thought it was too difficult for them, so we taught them back and exam them once again. To celebrate their success at passing the test, we held a celebration, which was graduation party for all children who have passed the test. And we both think that EFA shouldn’t stop here, we plan to continue this project by participating from class X.

3. To make and build confidence in children’s selves No confidence is one of the biggest problems. We sometimes see this problem when we see someone’s trying to speak English. Being shy, scared of mispronounce, shy to ask something will make our knowledge become narrow. Actually, from zero, we have to try until we’re being able to.
Through this procedure, we strongly believe it will be successful works: First, we made some advertisements by designing brochures, purposed to
gain volunteers to teach the needed children.
