Procedure

• Place the 5 albino mice on the pool• Observe and acclimatize for 30 minutes before

the administration of drugs (Frequency and Amplitude)

• Administer the drug intraperitoneally• Observe every 15 minutes thereafter.

Discussion

• Makahiya(scientific name: Mimosa pudica)

• creeping annual or perennial herb

• the compound leaves fold inward and droop when touched, re-opening within minutes.

• Common weed widely distributed in the Philippines, in open moist areas, open grasslands and open thickets

Constituents• Seed contains a toxic alkaloid, mimosine, a

non-protein alpha-amino acid, known to cause hair loss and depressed growth in mammals

• Roots yield flavonoids, phytosterol, alkaloids, amino acids, tannins, glycoside, fatty acids.

• Leaf extract have yielded an adrenaline-like substance.Seeds contain a mucilage composed of d-xylose and d-glucoronic acid, yielding 17% greenish yellow fatty oil.

Medicinal Properties

• Asthma; expectorant

• Antidepressant

• Root is aphrodisiac

• Analgesic

• Antispasmodic

• Leaves are used for diabetes

• In India, it is used as antifertility agent

• Mild sedative property

• Sedative drugs reduces anxiety (anxiolytic) and exert calming effect.

• Acts like Benzodiazepines, Barbiturates (Sedative- Hypnotic drugs)

NEUROPHARMACOLOGY

• GABA- major inhibitory neurotransmitter

• Potentiate GABAergic inhibition at all levels of the neuraxis, enhance GABA’s effects by increasing the frequency of channel-opening events ( Cl ion channels)

Effects of Sedative- Hypnotic Drugs

• Sedative drugs accompanied by depressant effects on cognitive and psychomotor functions

• inhibiting the development and spread of epileptiform electrical activity in the central nervous system (Anti- convulsant)

• Muscle relaxant- anti- spasmodic

• Conclusion

Makahiya is a delayed long-acting depressant effect

Causing mild sedation and anti- depressant.

Expt. E: HMP ON BLOOD SUGAR

• 10% Glucose- SD

• R.D 0.1mL

• Animal: albino mice

Procedure

• Starved and acclimatized the mice. Do not stress the mice

• Determine the base line blood glucose (Glucometer method)

• Inject 0.1ml 10% glucose intraperitonealy after 15min.

• Gather the blood glucose after 30min every 15min for 60min.

Glucose

• It is a monosaccharide, and is the most important carbohydrate in biology as a source of energy and metabolic intermediate

• Glucose is an important metabolic intermediate of energy.

• It is the treatment for hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar level, by providing the glucose needed in the blood.

• Conclusion

Glucose has a sustained short- acting Hyperglycemic effects

10% Glucose- Hypertonic solution
