Effluent Quality Monitoring System (A Case Study)

19

• Industrialization led to growth of production facilities, resulting in water

pollution in receiving water bodies.

• Regulatory guidelines were set up in most polluting industrial categories

to monitor pollutants discharge (e.g. distillery, F&B, textile,

chemical/petrochemical, tannery, pulp & paper, metal processing,

slaughterhouse, etc.).

• Key parameters identified: COD, BOD, pH, TSS, flow, and selectively other

parameters (e.g. nickel, arsenic, chromium, etc.).

• Real-time data of key parameters are captured, recorded and transmitted

to regulatory body-controlled data servers.

which is “reagentless”.

Biochemical Oxygen Demand: BOD is the amount of oxygen used during the

biological breakdown of organic material i.e. the quantity of oxygen removed from rivers and water ways etc. BOD is considered an indirect measure of the organic

content of a sample.

BOD measurement is a 5 or 7 day laboratory process.

Chemical Oxygen Demand: COD is the equivalent amount of oxygen needed to breakdown organic matter using strong oxidizing agents. It is an approximation of

BOD.

COD measurement is a 2 hours laboratory process.

Total Organic Carbon: TOC is the entire quantity of organic carbon that exists in a measured sample. TOC is used as a measure of the amount of organic pollution in a

water sample.

TOC measurement is a 7 minute online process.

SAC254 or UV254: Spectral absorbance coefficient (SAC) at 254 nm wavelength or UV254 is indicator of dissolved organic substance in a water sample. Measurement is

due to double-bonds of organic compounds absorbing UV light.

SAC254 measurement is a 1 minute online process.

ORGANICS: COD-BOD-TOC-SAC254 RELATIONSHIP

ORGANICS: COD-BOD-TOC RELATIONSHIP

UV Absorption DOES NOT directly measure: • TOC

• COD

• or BOD

Inorganic ions such as Nitrate (NO3) and Nitrite (NO2) also absorb UV light

(false positives).

Particulate organic solids and many common organics (non-double-bonds)

are not detected (false negatives). Example: Alcohols, Sugars, Organic acids, solvents such as Acetone and

Hexane.

All UV lamps diminish in intensity over time.

COMPARISON OF BOD, COD, TOC MEASUREMENT

PRINCIPLE

LOW-MAINTENANCE, ROBUST TOC ANALYZER DESIGNED FOR

HARSH SAMPLE AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION.

• Superior reliability – Typically 99.7% uptime

• High dependability – Patented Two-Stage Advanced

Oxidation (TSAO) technology handles even the most

challenging applications involving fats, oils, greases,

salts, sludge, and particulates

• Intelligent design – Self-cleaning technology and

oversized tubing eliminates filtration and prevents

clogging and sample contamination

• Minimal maintenance – No calibration or service

required between 6-month service intervals

• Low cost of ownership – Provides a quick pay back

with cost savings in customers’ chemical dosing, waste reduction and optimized processes

CONSIDERATIONS OF SITE SAMPLING CONDITIONS

HACH ONLINE CHEMICAL OXYGEN DEMAND (COD) –CHOOSING THE RIGHT INSTRUMENT

33

• It is important to know which measurement principle is suitable for the

sample.

• It is important to consider site sampling condition to choose suitable

analyzer.

• Interferences, accuracy, sampling cycle required for process control

automation and disposal of hazardous reagents are some other factors

that also need to be considered.

WHAT IS RTC?

41

RTC Industrial PC

RTC Proprietary Control Algorithm

Instruments and sensors

Plant information

Control setpoints:

• DO setpoint

• Polymer feed rate

• Chemical feed rate

RTC is an industrial computer running proprietary

algorithms that outputs a setpoint to control customer

processes

HOW DOES THIS INTEGRATE WITH CUSTOMER SYSTEMS?

42

In advanced plants seeking to optimize processes the RTC can be used to

provide a setpoint for control of aeration, or for polymer and chemical dosing
