NEED FOR SPEED
Attempting to modify and
customise the racing genre
made famous by theFast
and Furiousfranchise, the
adaptation of the popular EA
game shines like a new toy, but
as the race starts it becomes
apparent that the same engine
lies under the hood.
Absent of narrative,
screenwriter George Gatins
has crafted a vapid story of
betrayal, loss and revenge
around high-speed pursuits
and over-the-top luxury
car cross-country races.
Breaking Bads Aaron Paul
shows off his signature snarl
as blue-collar mechanicTobey Marshall, a good guy
with a mountain of debt.
Given an offer he cant
refuse from slimeball rich
kid Dino Brewster (Dominic
Cooper), things go from bad
to worse and Tobey ends up
in jail. Determined to clear
his name, he embarks on a
race against time to reclaim
his honour.
Need for Speeddoesntreinvent the wheel, but it
does stay true to the core
elements that fans will
know and love about the
original games. Unlike Fast
& Furious,where tin can-
sounding Japanese imports
are stock on the starting line,
a tendency towards luxury
brands and multi-million
dollar supercars means the
action stakes are higher
- and more exciting - as
these pieces of engineering
brilliance are thrown end
over end down numerous
American highways.
Pauls acting leaves little
to be desired as he grunts
out sentimentalities, while
Cooper falls easily into his
bad-boy stereotype. British
up-and-comer Imogen
Poots tries to steer the
narrative in a more heartfelt
direction (and fails), whileFifty Shades of Greyactress
Dakota Johnson provides
unwanted narrative fodder.
But hey, thats not why
were here and with death-
defying stunts aplenty, all
shot with limited CGI, theres
something to keep the car
enthusiast within hooked to
the screen.

Your house is on re,what do yousave?Gag. I suppose Id save
people. I would save my
boyfriend rst and then if I
had time I would save the
new neighbours upstairs
but I only really know one of
them so Id save her rst.
Favourite 90s TV show?Freaks and Geeks!
Dream job as a kid?I wanted to write the music for
Disney lms. I still kinda do.
If you werent a musician,
what would you be?My plan B was to write ads
cos I love bad puns.
Ultimate festival line-up?Prince. Also its not a
festival. Also were friends.
Who would play you ina lm?Oprah, cos shes really
emotional. Todd Emerson
from Daffodilssaid that herreal name is actually Orpah.
How do you discovernew music?I have a complex system
that involves a few specic
blogs, social media
recommendations, and
occasionally radio but radio
in the States is not good.
Worst job youve had?The worst was playing
piano for a childrens theatre
company. I had to play
Food Glorious Food for
two hours straight while a
Artist Q&Astring of seven-year-olds
lumbered through an overly
complicated dance routine.
The most interesting job I
ever had was alphabetizing
a sex library. It was very
educational; the job took
three times longer than it
should have.
Which song do you wishyou wrote?I Cant Make You Love
Me, sung by Bonnie Raitt.
Biggest fear?I have ridiculous fears. In
Daffodils I was terried that
the giant speaker hanging
above my head was
going to fall on me. I was
convinced I would be the
next Curtis Mayeld. I cant
stand ying. I hate stick
insects, theyre so spindly
and manipulative the way
they creep up on to you
pretending to be a harmless
stick. And THEN!
First gig in attendance? The Topp Twins at
Devonport Fair. Mum made
me go get their autograph,I was SO embarrassed. The
rst big gig that Im super
happy I went to was Michael
Jackson at Mt Smart, at age
11. We were way down the
back. The organizers sold
periscopes and that was
the only way I stood even a
chance at seeing the giant
screens.
Any vices?Like those corny Englishperiod shows, like Downton
Abbey,and I just nished
the rst season of Call the
Midwife. Everyone else in
our house thinks theyre
lame. I tried tricking Fen into
watching Call the Midwife
with me by renaming it
Telephone the Average
Spouse but he saw right
through this clever ruse.
Also, crack.

Eating Drinking
THE LUCKY TACO230 PONSONBY RD
AUCKLAND
This nomadic food truck offers enough to get hungry
Aucklanders excited. Usually on Ponsonby Road, they have a
schedule that allows you to track the trucks movement. The
Lucky Taco is the brainchild of artist Otis Frizzell and his wife
Sarah. The concept retains a remarkably homely style, as if
it was a hobby that morphed into a bread-earner over night.
The menu changes frequently and when theyve sold out, they
close up shop for the day. Auckland is lucky to have such an
authentic taqueria, with a range of chilli sauces designed to
zest up your meal or knock your socks off.
EMERSONS BREWERY14 WICKLIFFE ST
DUNEDIN
New Zealand sure has upped its game on the craft beer
front in recent times and these guys have been onto it from
the start. Emersons beers blend the best of Europe with the
essentials of New Zealand, using imported malts with premium
NZ hops. The key word in their philosophy and brewing
process is natural and they are committed to creating full and
fresh avours good enough to rank them as among the worlds
very best. Emersons retains the charm and personality of a
small brewery whilst expanding to meet the surge in demand
as people open their eyes and lips to these delicious beers.
KIWIBERRY84 THE SQUARE, THE PLAZA
PALMERSTON NORTH
The original frozen
yoghurt shop in NZ, they
have pioneered the DIY
approach. Customers
design how they want their
yoghurt to taste and what
toppings to include. Stores

KiwiBerri pride themselves
on being the innovator. They
outshine their competitors.
THE THAI KITCHEN239 COLOMBO ST
CHRISTCHURCH
Condently claims to be
the best Thai in town
and judging by the rave
reviews, they could well
be right. Authentic avours
come from the Thai chefs
who work hard to make
this little hole-in-the-wall
a cult favourite for hungry
Cantabrians. Food comas
will ensue with the size of
their generous portions.

TITANFALL
XBOX ONE
Titanfall is fast, man, fast. Its fast and I keep dying.
Youre dropped God knows where, with only the vague
semblance of an explanation. All you know is that you have
people to kill and they are trying to kill you. And you can y,
sort of.
Titanfallis stunning to look at. The maps are large and
confusing enough that you can fool yourself into thinking it
might just be an open world game. When you do get familiar
with the maze of corridors and buildings, you suddenlyremember that youre wearing a jump-jetpack and can zip
about on rooftops and walls. At this stage a bullet is usually
red from one of these rooftops, ending your current life.
From high up on the rooftops you can see the Titans as well.
It is actually awe-inspiring the rst time you see one of these
giant robots striding along a street, accompanied by other
pilots and grunts running cover along the roofs. You see it and
aspire to get one of your own. Nothing is more satisfying than
hearing, Your Titan is ready to drop.
Each of the three different types of Titan have different
attributes: one is fast and carries more rockets, one is the well-
balanced version and the other is all armour and nukes whenyou eject. Ejecting is important. While youve got one eye on
your target, you have to keep one eye on your armour level.
These big dogs arent indestructible.
Even with your gargantuan metallic buddy, you will die a lot,
man. A lot.
In combat, remember your grenades; remember that your
cloaking device is only good against Titans; remember that
your Titan has shields that can catch then return anything
shot at you. Stay in groups: teams work better in Titanfallthan
anything else Ive seen. Pilots need to concentrate on killing
Titans, and Titans need to travel in pairs to be truly safe. Get
your teams back.
Titanfall is just so full of things. The world is beautiful and
detailed, the maps are detailed and confusing, the giant robots
have plenty of places to hide. Take your time to drink it all in as
the bullets zing around and into you.

MGS5: GROUND ZEROES DELAYED IN AUS AND NZMetal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroeswill release in Australia
and New Zealand on March 27, a week later than originally
planned.
The game was due to release on Thursday 20 March, the
same date as the Japanese and European release, but local
retailers listings for all four platforms it is coming to (PlayStation
4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360), show the
Thursday 27 March date. We reached out to the publisher,
Konami, for comment, who conrmed the delay.
Though no reason for the delay was given, there are reports
that it is due to the Xbox One version not arriving in Australia
on time. Rather than have the game come out later on that
platform than on the others, Konami allegedly opted to delay
the games release entirely.
DRIVECLUB GOES BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARDDriveClub, an upcoming PlayStation 4-exclusive racing game
developed by Evolution Studios, has gone back to the
drawing board according to PlayStation software product
development head Scott Rhode.
DriveClub was originally scheduled to release as a launch title
for the PlayStation 4 last year, but was delayed in October with
no new release date unveiled.
Speaking to IGN, Rhodes has reiterated Sonys desire not to
release the game before its ready. What I will say is that it all
comes back to that fundamental principle, and thats that we
want to build great games, he said. And we really dont want
to release a game before its ready.
When it does release, a PlayStation Plus version of DriveClub
with fewer cars and tracks will be added to Sonys Instant
Game Collection, with the option of paying to upgrade to the
full version.

Sebadoh, a lo- indie band from the US
who have been around for about 27
years, have a soothing, capable sound.
You know that when listening you are
in the hands of professionals, without
losing any of the three-piece tradition.
In preparation for Sebadohs upcoming
tour in New Zealand, I got the chance
to talk to lead singer Lou Barlow about
the band.
Firstly, what does Sebadoh mean? Its a nonsense word I came up with
while recording my rst attempts at
songs, which were more like tape
collages. I repeated the word sebadoh
over a distorted guitar and tape
glitchesthen I forced it on Eric and
Jason as the name of our band.
Youve been around for about 27years, how do you keep comingup with new material? Do yound that your sound has changedsignicantly over that time?Over time we became more of a live
band, so the main focus is touring.
The early records had a lot of four-
track trickery going on the band is
a simple three-piece and has always
been a simple three-piece so honestlyIm not sure how much we could
change over the years. Our new
songs t nicely with the old songs in
my opinion, and I think the formula is
perfect: write songs for a three-piece
band, play them live, repeat.
Congratulations on getting numberone on the New Alternative Artistsbillboard last year! Have younoticed a change in your fan basesince that milestone?God no, its exactly the same. We
are indie rock survivors who play to
indie rock survivors. Its fair to say that
charts like that mean almost nothing
in terms of real-life perception of the
band or popularity.
Theres been a 14 year gap betweenyour last album and this one. Isthere any particular reason for this?We waited for the right conditions: solid
line-up, a place to record for free, the
necessary gear at our disposal. All that
happened in the last year or so, so
we went for it. Before that, the line-up
wasnt particularly solid and once we
did get some momentum it was crucial
to rst learn the old songs.
When you came to New Zealandlast time, was there anything newor unexpected that you remembernding here? Anything youre
looking forward to doing/seeing/eating on your return?New Zealand is beautiful, for one. On
my last multi-city tour there, back in
2002 or so, I drove into the mountains.
Im enamoured with the scenery. It
also has a unique indie-centric musical
tradition that I have a lot of respect for.
Its a special place, yknow, and Im
glad I get to go back.
What would you say was your
favourite song that Sebadoh hasreleased and why?Right now its All Kinds from an EP we
did recently. Its short, I play bass and
sing on it which makes it different than
my other Sebadoh songs. I like Jasons
guitar playing on it. The song references
a Mission of Burma song [Academy
Fight Song]. It was written quickly,
came together quickly, and makes me
wish I could be trapped in a studio for a
month with Jake and Bob and make a
little masterpiece for ourselves.
What do you guys do for fun orto chill out? Any weird hobbies orrituals before performing? When we are touring we are also
driving, selling our records, planning the
next day. Driving is actually excellent
chill out time we enter a very
satisfying quiet place because weve
done it for most of our lives. Each tour
is an opportunity to perfect the process.
Each of us has our obsessions. With
me, its trying to stay in touch with my
family at home and avoiding hangovers.
Would you say the place where yougrew up has inuenced your musicin any way?I grew up in an area if the US that has
an incredible amount of colleges. Most
of the colleges had radio stations, and
most of them played underground and
obscure music. I had new music: punk
pock, post punk, new wave, hardcore,
industrial music and college rock
(which is also referred to as alternative
pop/indie rock), at my ngertips. It
broadened my horizons and blew my
mind continually. It denitely inuenced
my mission to play music that
incorporated a lot of conicting styles
and emotions and was, at rst, more
aggressive and experimental. I was
exposed to a huge variety of bands. I
rst heard Joy Division, Gang of Four
when they were still current functioning
bands. I mail ordered music I liked. It
was amazing.
Did you grow up with music or amusical family, or did you branchinto it yourself?Im the only professional musician in my
immediate and extended family.
If you werent a musician, what doyou think youd be doing now?Probably a nurse. I cant imagine Id
have had the focus to be a doctor but
healthcare is my other calling.
Lastly If you could be any animal(real or imaginary), what wouldyou be?A Chihuahua. They are smart, live long
lives and are generally well taken care of.
Thanks to Lou for his detailed answers,
my interest in the band is now piqued.
Sebadoh are heading to NZ for the rst
time in nearly 20 years for four shows.

Martha Davis aint the kind of gal
to lose control. Since the early 80s,
through multiple iterations, big hair, pastel eyeshadow, shoulder pads and
synthetic pop shes been the proprietor
of her own establishment: The Motels.
Rumour has it is that she acquired the
name after the band broke up in the late
80s when she swapped the moniker for
a microphone. Actually, I think it was
more than that, she tells me over the
phone. I was lying in a bubble bath
with Dean [Chamberlain, the bands
founding lead guitarist], whod originally
come up with the name. I said I wantedto continue but he didnt, but he wasnt
in a position to say no, was he. He
had the end with the taps!
Daviss humour is a bit disarming. For
a woman famed for brooding, sultry
new wave torch songs, especially
Only The Lonely and Total Control, I
expected more attitude or resentment
in her voice, not this warm, comforting,
slightly down-home drawl and generous
demeanour.
Daviss media describes her music
as jagged, sophisticated pop songs
of heartbreak and redemption. Does
that mean shes really one to pull the
wings off cupid-angels? No, she
chortles, for a lot of writers, we do
that because were purging, riddingourselves of our demons. I describe
it thus: on a rainy day its very easy to
sit down and write your brains out but
on a sunny day when youre in love,
then youre not sittin down writing.
Youre just not! So when people meet
me they think Im a goofball, which I
am, not some sullen, sad suicidal waif.
Its the perfect relationship. People pay
for a psychiatrist. I get paid to analyse
myself! Music has been my God-sent
therapy, ever since I was eight years oldhiding away in my room when the family
got a little crazy. But life is peaceful
now, is it not? Davis owns a small farm
in Oregon. Im missing my ol donkey
though. And I just parted company with
Farmer Gord, who was leasin some of
land to raise his stock. He was the look,
you know: Long beard, dungarees,
plaid shirt and straw hat. Yes, quite
different from the city girl I was before.
The Motels have been around way
longer than their best singles, having
formed in Berkley as quartet in 1971
under the name The Wareld Foxes.
Gigs at The Whisky a Go-Go, the Roxy,
a house residency at Madame Wongs
in Chinatown and nally radio airtime
in LA scored them demo time in the
studio but it still took years before they
could put out satisfying content. In was
ten years of line up changes, failed
recording contracts and releases before
Mothers Day 1979, when the Motels
nally released their long-sweated
self-titled debut album. The rst singleClosets and Bullets dived but the
second, Total Control, hit the mark. It
found its way into top 20s around the
world. A quick Google search will tell
you that it still lives on as the theme
music of many movies, TV shows
and adverts. Yeah, wish the royalties
matched that haunting, Davis quips.
The Motels were one of those bands
that could have been bigger. Like
Berlin, they peaked after a few hits and
then continued with a diminished but
ercely loyal fan base. Continuing the
momentum was hard at times. The
bands second album garnered mild
attention but it was their third,All Four
Onethat nally struck pay dirt with the
release of the massive airplay single
Only the Lonely. That album almost
didnt happen. Val [Garay, producer]
made our original third (Apocalypso).
Capitol thought it was too weird, said
it wouldnt sell. Thats heartbreaking,
when youve done all that work. Thatcaused more splits in the band but the
remainder soldiered on to nally kick
outAll Four One. After the haze settled,
more divisions occurred. The band
never hit those dizzy heights again.
But who wants to return to the 80s
- my shoulder pads got stuck in the
doorway! Still Davis continued to hold
the fort. Since their big albums, shes
produced an additional four albums
under the Motels name and fourunder her own, including a childrens
collection. And her music still resonates
with her crowd. I have one fan that
nearly comes to all the shows. The
other day I was at a real backwater
and she pops up, says Davis, laughing
as she describes Mel in Flight of the
Conchords. Oh yes, I have those
people. But, you know, thats partly why
I keep doing it. For them.

Hands up who remembers
the band Figrin Dan and
The Modal Nodes! Of
course you know what Im
talking about: the group of
hairless alien musicians, also
known as the Cantina Band,
who appeared in the bar
scene in the original 1977
Star Warsmovie.
When I rst saw this strange
scene of an alien group
playing music that to my
ears sounded as alien as
they looked (although I later
found out that it was written
by lm composer JohnWilliams in a sort of sleazy
1940s jazz style), it really
got me thinking about what
music might sound like in
the future.
Things change faster than
we think they do. Back in
1977, when Star Warsrst
wowed audiences the world
over and changed the movie
industry overnight into acompetition to make the
biggest blockbusters, we
lived in what would now be
viewed as primitive times. We
still played music on vinyl LP
records or cassette tapes or
formats that hardly anyone
remembers like 8-track tape
cartridges. We grew our hair
long and tall and wore tight-
at-the-crotch bell-bottom
trousers and probably only
bathed once or twice a
week. Brazilians were sexy
foreigners, not naughty
haircuts, every cool male
read Playboy for the stories,
and cars with fuel injection
and automatic gears were still
a mad novelty.
My point? Time seems
static while were living
it every day, but science
and technology are really
moving things ahead along
at a frightening velocity.
We may not have quite
gured out how to make
a teleportation device
in order to explore the
universe, but considering
that the rst commercial
music recordings were
released only a little morethan a hundred years
ago, our progress in that
short period of time is
astonishing. Think about it:
nobody in the 19th century,
or any centuries before that
in the entirety of human
existence, had experienced
recorded music. Or for that
matter, television, or the
Internet, or computers, or
apps, or even iPads.
But we were talking about
the future, not the past. If
we can get from nding a
way to use electricity to the
invention of phones and the
phonograph all the way to
the smartphone in just a bit
more than a hundred years,
what can we expect from
the future, especially from
music?

30/32| GROOVEGUIDE.C O.NZ
By the end of this year, four Irishmen
from Dublin will have travelled the world
twice. They released their debut album
less than a year ago and a year before
that they released their rst EP. In one
year theyve seen more of the world
faster than any of them had imagined.
All off the back of 11 songs.
That isnt to say that these are small
songs. The debut In a Perfect World
is a collection of anthemic pop-
rock songs about love, heartbreak
and getting through it all. But unlike
most music (regardless of genre) the
emotional intensity of the songs will
move you to tears.
The band is Kodaline.
For bassist Jason Boland, speaking on
behalf of the band, its been the quickest
most bizarre year of any of our lives.
Theyre a band that have always
believed in their songs and in what they
do. As Boland says, every band that
starts out wants to be the biggest.
Its the speed and the scale of their rise
that has their heads spinning. When
other people started believing in what
we do it took on a whole other feeling,
says Boland.
All I Want was released as a single,
picked up by Google and used on their
best of 2013 video, has garnered over
six million views on Youtube and sold
100,000 copies in the rst three months.
Its incredible its come so far, says
Boland.
The video (if youve not seen it, watch
it), is a emotional story about a man
Boland calls the monster and his life
and love. Its rivalled only by the video
for High Hopes, an equally heart-
wrenching tale of love and loss.
The way we approach music videos is
that we look for a story thats going to
complement the emotions in our song.
Its hard to overstate Kodalines music
videos which are a step away from
most other videos youll see.
As with everything the band does, honesty
and emotion are a dening feature.
You should be able to tell theemotions of the songs, not just with
the words, says Boland. We may
only play simple notes but its about
how you play those notes.
Both the album and the band certainly
arent (as the old cliche puts it), all
doom and gloom. The album In a
Perfect Worldis about hopeful, wishful,
and positive thinking, says Boland.
Most of the songs are about love or
heartbreak but the point is that you canalways get through it.
As with all art, once it has been
released into the world, it stops
belonging to the creators and is owned
by the fans.
Weve found now, through the live
shows, that everyone has their own story
for the songs and theyre all new stories.
Thats what kept them fresh for us and
its brought the songs back to life.
He also says that when they play
the songs live, it takes each of them
back to the way they felt writing them,
despite playing them night after night.
Undeniably the mark of a good song.
It brings back connotations from when
that song was written and what its about.
Without his band members and the
bond that they share, Boland confesses
that living out those moments night
after night wouldnt be as easy.
If we werent friends for long, having
started in our bedrooms and not been
there for each other it would be a lot
harder to deal with.
They began as a very studio-orientated
band and Boland says they didnt
frequently play together.
Wed go in and record our parts and
put it together, which is a very modern
approach.
Youd never know from the strength of
their live shows - which have received
rave reviews across the world - that
they still feel as though theyre feeling
each other out. However, Boland says
that this has made for a better live show.
Playing live more has let us feel
other out better and put on a better
performance.
If youre seeing Kodaline when they play
the Powerstation at the end of March,
know that theyll be very well versed
in playing live - theyre playing their
biggest show ever at the O2 Academy.
Before we even get to New Zealand
well be playing our biggest headline
showto 12,000 people.
Boland says theyre not prepared for
it yet and even after playing the tourdates before it hes not sure they will be.
I dont know if youre ever prepared for
that kind of thing.
For four Irishmen from Dublin, Kodaline
has become bigger faster than they
ever thought possible. And with radio
stations the world over picking up the
singles and a second world tour well
underway, its safe to say they are only
just beginning.
