Ginkgo Biloba extractsDescriptionEUROMED ginkgo biloba extracts are standardized herbal extracsof Ginkgo biloba L. leaves, a “fossil tree” growing in Oriental Asiaand today widely cultivated as medicinal plat in Korea, the south-east of France and the United States.

ChemistryA multitude of polar and apolar compounds have been isolated inginkgo biloba leaves: aliphatic alcohols and keatones, organicacids, sesquiterpenes (bilobalide) and saccharides. Interestingcompounds from the therapeutic point of view are flavonoidscompounds from the therapeutic point of view are flavonoids andditerpenes.The flavonoids are represented by about twenty flavonol glycosides,quercetin and kaempferol 3-rhamnosides and quercetin andkaempferol, and by biflavonoids (amentoflavone, bilobetol, 5-mehoxybilobetol...). Ginkgo biloba leaves also have flavan-3-olsand proanthocyanidins. Ginkgo biloba diterpenes, known asginkgolides A,B, C, J and M, have and hexacylic structurecharacterized by a spiro- [4,4]-nonanic sequence, a tert-butyl group,and three lactones rings.

IndicationsExtracts of ginkgo biloba leaves are proposed to treat the symptonsof senile cerebral insufficiency, memory loss associated with aging,early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, poor circulation to the extremities,intermittent claudication, tinnitus and hearing loss.Ginkgo biloba extracts have antoxidants activity and ability toinhibit platelet aggregation, wich are critical in the prevention ofcirculatory diseases.

Contraindications, interactions and side-effectsGinkgo biloba extract is generally well tolerated, but it iscontraindicated in patients known to be hypersensitive to ginkgobiloba preparations. In less than 1 percent of patients mildgastrointestinal complaints may occur and patients with poor bloodflow may experience a mild, transient headache for the first andsecond days of use.Due to the inhibitory effect on the platelet-activating factor (PAF)if could interact with antithrombotic therapies. Contraindicationsto the use of ginkgo biloba extracs during pregnancy or lactationhave not been reported.
