DEAR FRIENDS:Throughout the 30-year history of the Fuel Fund, donors, volunteers and staff have come together to help our Maryland neighbors emerge from a crisis with hope and dignity intact.
In 2013, the Fuel Fund launched a capacity-building initiative that will result in more families receiving support more quickly. The Fuel Fund delivers crisis funding, and it is critical that the funding arrive quickly. The story of Mr. V, a senior living on his own who received help from the Fuel Fund, captures the crisis nature of the Fuel Fund’s work.
It was below freezing, with snow on the ground. Mr. V was out of heating oil. At 75-years-old, blood thinners and other medical issues made him even more susceptible to the cold, and so he was using his stove for warmth. His limited income was not enough to fill his oil tank in time, so he called the Fuel Fund for help. The Fuel Fund worker urged him to turn off his stove for fear of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning. Mr. V said he had no other choice plainly stating, “I am old and cold.”
The Fuel Fund worker called Mr. V’s oil company immediately. The worker explained the urgency of the situation to the oil company’s president, who in turn arranged for the delivery of 100 gallons of fuel the very next day. Mr. V is now safe and warm in his home thanks to your generosity and the trusted name of Fuel Fund of Maryland.
There are many seniors in our communities that face dilemmas similar to Mr. V. Our prosperous state still ranks 42nd in the nation in home energy affordability. Marylanders with incomes below 50% of the Federal Poverty Level pay nearly 80% of their income for home energy, whereas 6% is considered affordable. Together, we can make certain that our neighbors are connected to life-sustaining energy.
The Fuel Fund’s capacity-building efforts will…• Help us serve 19,000+ families annually by 2017• Reduce the amount of time it takes for many in crisis
to get help (from weeks to hours)• Expand our Watt Watchers of Maryland program so that
every household receiving bill assistance has access to conservation techniques and energy-saving resources

The Fuel Fund is profoundly grateful for the passion and resources our supporters dedicate to improving the lives of our neighbors. As we move forward in our capacity-building efforts, we look forward to keeping you updated. Please join us on social media to learn more about the Fuel Fund and witness the incredible effects the gift of power can have on the life of a neighbor.

That energy takes many forms: natural gas, electricity, home heating oil, wood and propane—whatever it takes to keep people safe and secure in their homes in the icy winter and scorching summer. The Fuel Fund of Maryland helps avoid homelessness, because nonpayment of energy bills is the number two reason people lose their homes. We promote safe homes, because without access to energy, families often try
makeshift means to heat and light their houses, which oftentimes proves fatal. And we help children stay in school. The greatest tragedy of evictions caused by utility turnoffs is that children not only lose their homes, they also lose their schools, teachers, friends and neighborhood support systems.
DONORSDONATIONS HELP THE FUEL FUND OF MARYLAND KEEP PEOPLE IN THEIR HOMES CONNECTED TO LIFE-SUSTAINING ENERGY.
