NASIONAL BIRD
PARK

2/22
The National Bird Park was established in 1991 and is one of the biggest enclosed
aviaries in the world. It is an eight-hectare garden, enclosed with ceiling nets to
make it a jungle in the city. The nets are high enough for even big birds like the
rhinoceros hornbills that have wide wingspans to fly around freely. It is home to over
3000 birds of 200 local and foreign species. Most of the birds here are free to roam
within the premises.
The park is divided into four zones, each separated by a system of sliding
doors. Zones 1 and 2 are the largest with plenty of space for the soaring flamingos,
bulky pelicans and graceful milky storks. Zone 3 is home to hornbills, pheasants and
smaller fowls. Zone 4 encloses parrots, cockatoos and flightless birds. Besides these
zones where the birds move about freely, there are cages holding a variety of birds.
These are birds that cannot get along with others for they are either the predators or
the preys. If they were placed in the zones, the predators would kill the other
occupants very quickly.
The park plays a role in conservation of animals. Besides, it educates
people about bird life, native and foreign. People who have no information or
knowledge about birds tend to be afraid. Fearing that they might be attacked, they
throw stones at them. So, the park attempts to bridge the gap to create empathy
between people and birds. There is a bird show twice daily to entertain and informthe public about birds. Some birds are kept in a booth where visitors can have their
photos taken with them.
Visitors say that they like to go there for a walk because its so peaceful. One
feels as though one is on the edge of a jungle, miles away from the city. It is

handicapped-friendly with ramps for wheelchairs. It is a good place to see healthy

Sleep is very important part of our daily life. A sound sleep makes a whole world of
difference as it helps the body to recover from the stress and strain of the day. Thus,
it can safely be said that it is not just a pit-stop for the body from top-to-toe to rest
and repair itself. It helps to revitalize the will and sharpen the mind.
After an adequate rest of between seven to eight hours, you spring out of bed
and are ready to take on the world. On the other hand, getting up groggy and
lethargic means you have probably overslept or had a bad a bad night. Therefore,
you should try to sleep before midnight, preferably from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. This is the
time most of us feel drowsy as the body mechanism starts to slow down. Follow a
regular sleep pattern, that is, go to bed and wake up at the same time every day as
far as possible.
The mind sends sleep signals when you are ready for bed. Hence, ignoring
such signals and trying to beat sleep will only leave you struggling to fall asleep. Dim
or switch off all the lights in the room as artificial lights supposedly kill the release of
melatonin, which aids the sleep process. You should not try to stay up to docomputer work past midnight. The body will not have sufficient time to renew and
heal itself and you might wake up feeling tired, constipated and depressed the next
morning.
The number of sleep hours varies from person to person. Some people can
do with four hours while others need eight hours of sleep. Babies need more hours
of sleep while teenagers and working adults need less hours of sleep. As one ages,
like the older people, one will have the tendency to sleep less. In general, the
maximum number of sleep hours is eight hours.
There are certain food that helps you to relax the brain and nerves and make
sleep easy. They include food like rice, wholegrain pasta, vegetables, oats and
chocolate, all of which contain tryptophan, the amino acid and the produces

serotonin to help you nod off. A glass of milk or chamomile tea can help to relax the
mind and body.
To wind down to a good nights rest, have a light dinner, relax with a book,
indulge in a warm bath and you are ready for a good sleep by ten.

WETLANDS

Wetlands are areas of marsh or peat land with water that is static or flowing. They
are ecosystems whose formation and characteristics are determined by water. The
major types of wetlands in Malaysia are mangroves, freshwater swamp forests, peat
swamp forests, lakes and river systems.
Until recently, people thought that wetlands were soggy, useless land that
would only be valuable if they were drained and developed for agriculture, housing or
infrastructure projects. Besides the direct physical destruction, wetlands are also
threatened by chemical contamination and other pollutants.
Wetlands prevent flooding by holding water like a large sponge. Water
moves slowly and this prevents flooding. Wetlands store water during storms when
levels are high. Then, when water levels are low, wetlands release water. Wetland
plants have roots planted firmly in the muddy bottom, but with stalks that rise highabove the water surface. This can slow down the flow of water. By doing this, they
counter the waters erosive forces.
Wetlands clean the water by filtering out the sedimentation. Because of this,
wetlands have been referred to as the kidneys of the ecosystem. Even harmful
chemicals are converted into useable forms in this cleansing process. Many
governments are now converting lands into artificial wetlands to filter out pollution.
Wetlands are the habitats for a very large variety of plant and animal life.
Wetlands provide the breeding, nesting and feeding grounds for many site
endangered species. Even animals that live in other habitats use wetlands for
migration and reproduction. The plant diversity of wetlands provides a breeding site
for crabs, prawns and fish.
The many diverse products of wetlands generate numerous socio-economic
benefits that are important for the livelihood of local communities. Among the many
products that are obtained from wetlands are water supply for domestic use,
fisheries, forage resources, craft materials and medicinal plants.
Wetlands are also treasured for their aesthetic value. They are wonderful
places to visit. Their intrinsic natural beauty makes them the favourite haunt of
tourists, where opportunities for activities like boating, fishing and bird-watching
exist.
The many benefits of wetlands are reason enough for conserving them.
Reclamation of wetlands for development robs many types of flora and fauna of their
habitats and ultimately leads to their extinction. Conservation efforts must therefore
be taken before our natural wealth is lost through the selfish pursuits of man.

Education is normally understood as the process of teaching, training and learning
carried out in the schools to develop skills and acquire knowledge. Development of a
childs character and attitude is education too, albeit, outside the classroom meaning

extra-curricular activities and social interactions with friends and family. I feel that
education can be acquired anywhere, whether in or out of the classroom. They
actually complement each other and the end result is a wholesome development of
the childs potentialities.
Classroom learning involves the discovery of a childs intellectual talents
through the lessons taught, subjects learned and the projects and experiments in the
Art and Science. They help to unravel a childs potential talents and aptitudes. The
child acquires knowledge under the guidance of teachers who advise, correct and
guide him. The importance lies in the qualification acquired and which is the passport
to further education and qualification.
In addition to this, the child learns to think rationally, logically, critically and to
be systematic. All these are acquired in the course of mastering the subjects taught.
Personal characteristics are taught and acquired indirectly as the child learns
discipline and the importance of a sense of responsibility. All these add up to self-
confidence.
However, education outside the classroom is no less important. In the field of
extra-curricular activities, the child learns about responsibilities, leadership,
teamwork, co-operation and loyalty. He learns that in every competition there is
victory and defeat and the spirit of sportsmanship and acceptance is an important
part of life. All these will help him to get along with people when he enters the
working world.
Social interaction with friends and family is education too. The child learns
the ethics of social behaviour, importance of consideration for other peoples feelings
and love and care for his fellow beings. He acquires an understanding of different
cultures and traditions and learns to respect other peoples lifestyle and
religion. Thus, it is obvious that classroom education and out of class education are
of equal importance. They complement rather than override each other.

NARRATIVE
MY GREATESTREGRET
8/4/2019 Essays Auto Saved)
19/22
When I was young, my family lived in a dilapidated house in Kampong Hulu on the
outskirts of Melaka town. It stood on wooden stilts and had a steeply sloping roof of
corrugated sheets.
We seemed to live in perpetual darkness. Daylight from morning to eveningwas blocked out by the surrounding trees. I enjoyed listening to the sweet chirping of
the birds. The night was a different kettle of fish. It was dark, foreboding and
frightening with shadows that seem to lengthen and shrink with every gust of wind.
Our imagination worked overtime as we crawled into bed and pulled the blankets
over our heads. Our fears were compounded during cheng beng (Chinese All Souls
celebration) and the Hungry Ghost month.
From the outside, the house looked dreary and creepy. Friends shied away
and there were whispers that our house was haunted. I used to play in friends
houses but never invited them over out of a sense of shame. My parents used to
encourage us to invite friends over. But, we, especially I, felt too ashamed to do so.
Father pointed out the paintings and antiques treasures that they would appreciate.
The compound was big enough for rounder, tic-tac-toe or hop-scotch, No, I kept
telling myself my house was not worthy of my friends. It was rotten and ugly.
Life was not so terrible all the time. My sibling and I had well times playing
hide-and-seek and climbing the horizontal plank walls. The paintings and antiques
had many stories to tell.
I left home to continue education in the States. I left with a happy heart, glad
to be out of the rotten eyesore. But, within a month, I was so homesick for my rotten
eyesore that I almost gave up my studies. Images of the houses came to mind. It
was so picturesque with a character of its own. Father had extended the house until
it was double its original size.
How could I look down on my house, no, my house! I had been so busy
downgrading it. I never took the time to appreciate the love, warmth and ties it had
acquired throughout the years. I had been looking at it with rose tinted glasses! My
greatest regret!
