ERASMUS 2014/2015 The Law School is Universidade Nova de Lisboa ’s most recent faculty and the choice of over 700 students. It was estab l ished in order to create an innovation centre for the development of jurid ica l science and the teaching of law in Portuga l . It is based on progress in research, the teaching of new programmes, the use of new pedagogica l methods, and pursues the ob jective of provid ing a response to the new demands of understand ing socio and lega l issues of professiona l tra ining . The Law Faculty ’s f irst academic year began in September 1997. In the 2007/2008 academic year, our Law Faculty began reorganising its curricula accord ing to the Bologna Process, which resulted in three cycles. The 1 st cycle is d ivided into four years (240 ECTS) . The 2n d cycle, which is the equiva lent of an MA , enta i ls three or four semesters, the third and fourth being ded icated to the preparation of a thesis, a tra ining report or a work project (102 ECTS) . The 3 rd cycle leads to a Phd (240 ECTS) . The Law Faculty of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa is located on the Col ina de Campol ide (Campol ide H i l l ) , on the same site that has been occup ied by the Economics Faculty since 1978. The Chancel lery bui ld ing was a lso opened at the Campol ide University Campus in 2002.

1. INFORMATION FOR INCOMING STUDENTS AA ll sub jects are taught in semesters. Each semester comprises a number of compulsory and optiona l sub jects. Compulsory sub jects include the ma in Law sub jects, those which are deemed essentia l for the common tra ining of lawyers, in particula r Constitutiona l Law, Genera l Theory of Civi l Law, Crimina l Law, A dministrative Law, Pub l ic Internationa l Law, Civi l Procedure Law and a lso some courses in the area of H istory , Sociology and Economics, such as Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. Optiona l sub jects include Environmenta l Law, Competition Law, Law and Economics, Socia l Equa l ity Law, Internationa l Tax Law, A ccounting Law, H istory of the State, Bank ing and Insurance, Hea lth and Bioethics. A cademic staff have a very good work ing knowledge of Engl ish and some other languages l ike French, mak ing it possib le for Erasmus students to write their essays and exams in Engl ish or French, and in some cases a lso other languages, if necessary .

4. ACADEMIC INFORMATION AA C A D E M I C C A L E N D A R The academic year is d ivided into 2 semesters. The first semester begins in September and ends in January ; the second semester begins in February and ends in June. Exams are taken at the end of each semester.

o Students can register for a maximum of 6 subjects each semester. Sub jects
must be included in the study p lan of the officia l degree programme offered (sub jects from 1 st and 2n d Cycles) . E rasmus students are not a l lowed to register for the fol lowing sub jects: Lega l Information and Documentation, Essay (free sub ject) , Interd iscip l inary Lega l Practice.
o Some optiona l sub jects may exceptionab ly be unava i lab le if the
minimum required number of students has not registered , or if the number of students is superior to the Numerus Clausus. Please be aware of this fact when you complete the learning agreement.
o Students who fa i l a sub ject in the 1 st semester can be admitted for re-
examination in the 2n d semester. Please re-register when required (p lease check date) ;

o OOnce classes have started , students have a two-week period in which they can change their choice of sub jects sub jected to the learning agreement.
o Erasmus students are a l lowed to do the fina l exam in a foreign language, provided the teacher is f luent in that language.
5. BEFORE COMING TO OUR LAW FACULTY
o Students who are citizens of European Union Member States do not need a Visa .
o A visa is necessary for a l l students from non-EU countries.
o Students must app ly for the European Hea lth Card at the hea lth service offices in their country of orig in.

FOR FOR E I GN E R S The Faculdade de Ciências Socia is e Humanas of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa organizes Portuguese language and culture courses for students that wish to learn and enhance their knowledge of Portuguese language and culture. The courses are a lso intended for Erasmus and Erasmus Mundus students. A t the end of each semester, a certif icate is issued . To receive a certif icate with a f ina l classif ication and the correspond ing ECTS, students must attend at least 75% of lessons.
