Universidade NOVA de Lisboa was founded in 1973, along with the universities of Aveiro and Minho and so, during the current academic year, we will be celebrating its fortieth anniversary.

Forty years of history have quickly passed, in one of the most complex periods of Portuguese history. We wish that the next forty years will be equally successful!

In order to achieve this goal, we will keep the original innovative spirit, along with an irreverent and competent presence in society at large, from science to education and culture, but also in such fields as technology, communication, health, economy, management and law. Our university is present in three municipalities of Lisbon’s metropolitan area, but our activities resonate far beyond the Tagus estuary, in Portugal and in the World. Our professors, researchers, non-faculty staff and students are a testament to this, by their presence in research, teaching and learning activities in several continents.

Arriving at NOVA in times like these must be fascinating. Despite the current crisis, the diversity of our institutions, people and environments, make our faculties, institutes and school, ideal for unique and rewarding experiences.

I hope that this brochure will help our visitors in getting to know NOVA better and that the young newcomers can find in it the necessary information to quickly adapt to our ever-changing reality.

No ano letivo que agora se inicia terão lugar as comemorações do quadragésimo aniversário da NOVA, fundada em 1973, juntamente com as suas irmãs de Aveiro e do Minho.

Quarenta anos de história passaram muito depressa e ocorreram num dos períodos mais complexos da história de Portugal. Queremos que os próximos quarenta sejam igualmente bem-sucedidos!

Manter o espírito inovador com que foi fundada, juntamente com uma irreverente e competente presença em todos os setores da sociedade, desde a ciência, à educação e à cultura, mas também em áreas como a tecnologia, a comunicação, as múltiplas vertentes da saúde, a economia, a gestão e o direito, tem sido o nosso lema. Somos a universidade da área metropolitana de Lisboa, com presença em três dos seus concelhos, mas as nossas atividades transbordam o estuário do Tejo e projetam-se em Portugal e no Mundo. Disso dão testemunho os nossos professores, investigadores, funcionários e estudantes que investigam, ensinam e aprendem em vários continentes.

Chegar à NOVA nesta altura deve ser fascinante, mesmo no meio da crise em que vivemos, porque a diversidade das instituições, das pessoas e dos ambientes, faz das nossas faculdades, institutos e escola locais de experiências únicas e muito enriquecedoras.

Espero que esta publicação ajude quem nos visita a conhecer melhor a NOVA e que os jovens recém-chegados encontrem nela as informações necessárias a uma rápida adaptação à nossa realidade, ela própria em constante mudança.

The General Council, one of the three main governing bodies of NOVA, is not a mere consultative council, but a true legislative body. According to its statutes, it has 14 internal members, including 3 students, and 7 external members, one of which is elected as its President.

The Rector represents the University and holds the highest level of executive power. However, the General Council has significant powers, namely electing the Rector, monitoring the activities of the University governing bodies, approving strategic plans, annual reports, budget proposals, students fees, etc..

In 2011, the Council approved the 2009 financial statement, and gladly remarked that, in comparison with 2008, the technical improvements in the management of NOVA were quite significant. It appreciated also the Plan and Budget for 2011 and approved new rules for the election of its student members.

The Council appreciated as well the work of the Teaching Quality Council of NOVA and took the initiative of promoting the analysis of methodologies for hiring professors under a tenure contract. It suggested also the concession of the title of emeritus professor, as a distinction awarded to the most illustrious retired professors of the University.

However, the most important document approved by the Council in 2011 was the NOVA Strategic Plan. Some of the most appreciated topics in this Plan were: the advantages for NOVA in becoming a foundation, the creation of a Doctoral School, deciding on the right steps towards the internationalization of the University, developing research activities, human resources, fund raising and mobilization of the alumni in order to benefit from their support.

On behalf of the Council, I would like to thank the Rector, the Rectoral Team and the Deans of the academic units for their cooperation, and greet NOVA’s professors, students and non-faculty staff, and specially the freshmen, to whom we wish happiness and success.

O Conselho Geral, um dos 3 órgãos máximos da NOVA, não é um mero conselho consultivo, mas um verdadeiro órgão legislativo. De acordo com os Estatutos, compõe-se de 14 membros internos, incluindo 3 estudantes, e 7 membros externos de entre os quais o Presidente é obrigatoriamente eleito.

Embora o Reitor, representante da Universidade, exerça dentro desta o poder executivo ao nível mais elevado, o Conselho Geral dispõe de importantes poderes. Não só lhe compete eleger o Reitor, como apreciar os atos dos vários órgãos de governação, aprovar planos estratégicos, planos e relatórios anuais, orçamentos e contas, os quantitativos das propinas, etc..

Em 2011, o Conselho aprovou as contas de 2009, tendo tido a satisfação de assinalar, ao compará-las com as de 2008, as evidentes melhorias de ordem técnica ocorridas na gestão. Apreciou por outro lado o Plano e o Orçamento para 2011 e aprovou um novo regulamento para a eleição dos seus membros estudantes.

Tomou conhecimento, também, do trabalho do Conselho de Qualidade do Ensino da NOVA e tomou iniciativas como as de apreciar a metodologia a seguir na contratação dos docentes em regime de tenure. Debruçou-se ainda sobre a criação do título de professor emérito, como distinção a atribuir aos mais ilustres professores jubilados da Universidade.

O documento mais importante que o Conselho aprovou em 2011 foi o Plano Estratégico. Dos pontos mais apreciados desse Plano, constam as vantagens da adoção do regime de fundação para a NOVA, a criação de uma Escola Doutoral, passos a dar no sentido da internacionalização da Instituição, do desenvolvimento da investigação, da formação de recursos humanos, da angariação de receitas, e da mobilização dos antigos alunos em prol da Universidade.

Em nome do Conselho, agradeço ao Magnífico Reitor, à Equipa Reitoral e aos Diretores das Unidades Orgânicas o apoio que nos têm dado, e saúdo os professores, estudantes e funcionários da NOVA, muito especialmente as caloiras e caloiros aos quais desejo os maiores êxitos e felicidades.

The mission of NOVA, as a university institution that wishes to be a reference, is broken down as follows:

Em outubro de 1985 saí de Évora rumo à capital para frequentar a licenciatura em Engenharia de Produção Industrial na Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da NOVA. O campus de Caparica seria o local onde iria viver os próximos 5 anos. Fui seduzido pela diferença, as novas engenharias, os projetos inovadores e pela dimensão humanista. Uma escola nova, onde se vivia um ambiente estimulante e desafiante fora da confusão da cidade, mas suficientemente próximo. Fui presidente da AEFCT, o que foi uma experiência fantástica como escola de vida. Recordo uma escola de fortes relações com empresas, formação muito prática, professores exigentes mas disponíveis, que me preparou de forma muito sólida para a minha carreira profissional.

I left Évora in 1985 towards the capital city to graduate on Engenharia de Produção Industrial in the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia of NOVA. The Caparica campus was the place to live my next 5 years. I was seduced by the difference, the new engineering courses, the innovative projects and the humanistic environment. It was a new school, with a stimulating and challenging environment in a campus smelling like country side, but near the big city. I was president of the Students Union (AEFCT), a great experience as a school of life. I remember a school with strong relations with companies, very practical training, demanding and available teachers, which gave me a solid preparation for my professional career.

A Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia (FCT) está localizada no Campus de Caparica (30 ha), ao sul de Lisboa, sendo considerada uma das escolas públicas portuguesas mais prestigiadas de ciências e de engenharia, desenvolvendo uma extensa atividade de investigação, através de 18 centros reconhecidos pela Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, envolvendo 1.600 estudantes de doutoramento e de mestrado de um total de 7.800.

Com 550 docentes e investigadores (90% doutorados) e 180 funcionários não docentes, a FCT está estruturada em 14 Departamentos e 8 Serviços de apoio.

Ao abrigo do Programa Erasmus para a mobilidade de estudantes, a FCT possui mais de 280 acordos bilaterais com instituições de Ensino Superior.

A FCT integra diversas parcerias com universidades estrangeiras, destacando-se a colaboração com o MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), a Universidade de Carnegie Mellon e a Universidade do Texas em Austin, na oferta de programas doutorais e de estudos avançados. As iniciativas empresariais dos seus estudantes e docentes levaram à criação de várias spin-offs de sucesso, as quais contribuem para a transferência de conhecimento e para a relevância social da sua investigação.

The Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCT) is located at the Campus of Caparica (30 ha), south of Lisbon.

FCT is one of the most prestigious public portuguese engineering and science schools and it is engaged in extensive research activity developed in 18 research centres recognized by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia and involving 1,600 PhD and Master’s students of the total enrolment of 7,800.

With a total of 550 academic and research staff (90% holding a PhD) and 180 non-academic staff, FCT is organized in 14 Departments and 8 Support services.

Under the Erasmus Programme for students mobility, FCT has established over 280 agreements with european universities.

Criada em 1977, a Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (FCSH) é uma unidade interdisciplinar cujos objetivos de ensino e investigação se caracterizam pela diversidade e criatividade de saberes. Situada no centro de Lisboa, integra um total de 5.269 alunos, sendo 2.909 de licenciatura, 1.718 de mestrado e pós-graduações e 642 de doutoramento. O corpo docente conta com 325 membros, na sua quase totalidade doutorados.

A FCSH disponibiliza 14 licenciaturas (duas das quais em horário pós-laboral), durante as quais os alunos podem beneficiar de programas de mobilidade (ex.: Erasmus), que envolvem anualmente mais de 350 estudantes. Na formação pós-graduada, oferece 7 cursos de pós-graduação, 44 cursos de mestrado e 20 de doutoramento, todos lecionados em regime pós-laboral.

A excelência na investigação em áreas das Ciências Sociais e Humanas, uma das vocações da FCSH, é assegurada por 19 unidades de investigação avaliadas pelos painéis internacionais da Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) – das quais, duas com “Excelente” e 12 com “Muito Bom” - onde trabalham mais de 600 investigadores integrados na FCT. A Faculdade acolhe ainda 188 bolseiros de doutoramento e 157 de pós-doutoramento.

Founded in 1977, the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas (FCSH) (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities) is an interdisciplinary unit with teaching and research objectives, characterized by the diversity and creativity of knowledge. Located near Lisbon city center, it hosts a total of 5,269 students, 2,909 in undergraduate programmes, 1,718 in masters and 642 in PhD programmes. It has 325 professors, almost all holding a PhD degree.

FCSH offers 14 undergraduate programmes (two of them in after-work schedule), during which students can benefit from mobility initiatives (e.g.: Erasmus), annually involving more than 350 students. In graduate training, FCSH offers 7 postgraduate programmes, 44 masters degrees and 20 PhD degrees, all provided in after-work schedule.

The excellence of research in Social and Human Sciences, one of the missions of FCSH, is assured by 19 research centres assessed by international panels from Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) – two of them rated as “Excellent” and 12 as “Very Good” – that gather more than 600 researchers integrated in FCT. The Faculty hosts 188 PhD grantees and 157 postdoctoral researchers.

Fiz o curso de Ciências da Comunicação entre os anos de 1993 e 1997. Foi um período muito agitado a nível académico e, por isso, imensamente enriquecedor. A FCSH teve para mim essa dupla dimensão: além de oferecer um curso prestigiado – e considerado nos meios jornalísticos – deu-me a oportunidade de estudar num ambiente académico eclético, que contribuiu decisivamente para a minha formação.

I have obtained my degree in Communication Sciences between 1993-1997. It was a very turbulent period at academic level and, therefore, greatly enriching. At that time, the FCSH had a double dimension for me: besides offering a prestigious undergraduate programme in communication sciences – and recognized by the media - the Faculty gave me the opportunity to study in an eclectic academic environment, which contributed decisively to my training.

The Faculdade de Ciências Médicas (Faculty of Medical Sciences) (FCM) is Universidade NOVA de Lisboa’s (NOVA) medical school since 1977. FCM has around 1,500 undergraduate students, 1,300 postgraduate students and 389 professors and researchers (30% hold a PhD degree); 15% of the professors are employed on a full-time basis.

In 2012-2013 the implementation of the New Curricular Plan, initiated in 2011-2012 for the first year students, will continue. Clinical teaching takes place at several health institutions, with which FCM has protocols ratified by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Science. In addition, FCM collaborates with other educational and research institutions.

FCM offers a great diversity of postgraduation courses and programmes in different health areas and has a growing number of groups of excellence in biomedicine, translational research, clinical research, and epidemiology and services.

A Faculdade de Ciências Médicas (FCM) é uma unidade orgânica da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (NOVA), desde 1977. Tem cerca de 1.500 alunos de pré-graduação e 1.300 alunos de pós-graduação. Conta com 389 docentes e investigadores, dos quais 30% doutorados e 15% em tempo integral.

The Faculty of Law at the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa was founded in 1996, in order to challenge a rather conservative, traditional way of teaching and learning law in Portugal.

The Faculty teaches three cycles (Bachelor, Master, PhD). The first takes eight semesters, the second three and the third from eight up to ten. In all of them the students are prepared both in core, compulsory subjects and in rather a wide variety of optional courses.

In order to answer the growing demand by foreign students, some courses, some seminars (European Master second semester courses, in cooperation with Universidade de Coimbra) and theses supervision are carried out in English.

CEDIS is our main research centre. We host centres of public (community) service which also carry out some teaching and research: RAL (Alternative Dispute Resolution); ANTÍGONA (issues of discrimination, with a view to helping actual or potential victims); CPIC (copyright and patents legal issues).

A Faculdade de Direito da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa foi fundada em 1996, como ‘polo inovador no desenvolvimento da Ciência jurídica’.

O 1.º Ciclo, além das disciplinas na área do Direito, abrange Ciências Sociais e matérias instrumentais. O 2.º Ciclo divide-se em Jurídicas Empresariais, Forenses, Internacionais, Sociais e Direito Público, podendo os estudantes escolher entre a elaboração de uma tese ou um relatório de estágio ou projeto.

O 3.º Ciclo, implicando a discussão pública do Projeto de dissertação e a apresentação de um tema ao SPEED, permite ultrapassar a mera participação nos tradicionais seminários.

O CEDIS (Direito e Sociedade), o Laboratório LRAL (Resolução de litígios), a Antígona (Igualdade e discriminação), o CPIC (Concorrência e propriedade intelectual) têm congregado a investigação de professores e doutorandos.

A escolha alargada de disciplinas de opção e os Cursos em áreas pouco exploradas (Segurança, Desporto, Justiça, Arbitragem, Imigrantes) acentuam a distinção da marca FDNOVA.

The Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT) is a young centenary institution, unique in the Portuguese academy. Aimed initially at the study, teaching and medical practice related to tropical diseases, IHMT has recently evolved towards an integrated approach, ranging from the molecular level to global health systems, adopting, without abandoning its tropical vocation, a strong commitment to solving health problems that afflict the poorest and the excluded in all continents.

Since its inception, the Institute has been at the forefront of research directed at tropical endemic diseases, and these lines are still part of its current work, reinforced by research work on tuberculosis, several viral deseases prevalent in the tropics, travelers’ and migrant population’s health and health services systems, which confers the Instituto a strong international character as part of networks and projects in partnership.

The research work is closely linked to several master and doctoral programmes, but also through its technical assistance work to the ministries of health in Portugal and other countries. The quality of its performance was recognized by the WHO, when it assigned us the status of Collaborating Center for Health Workforce Policy and Planning.

O Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical (IHMT) é uma jovem Instituição centenária, ímpar na academia portuguesa. Vocacionado inicialmente para o estudo, ensino e clínica das doenças tropicais, evoluiu recentemente para uma abordagem integrada que vai desde o nível molecular aos sistemas globais de saúde, adotando, sem abandonar a sua vocação tropical, um forte empenho na resolução de problemas de saúde que, em todos os continentes, afligem os mais pobres e os excluídos.

Desde a sua origem, o Instituto tem estado à frente da investigação das grandes endemias tropicais, e estas linhas de trabalho continuam atuais, reforçadas por estudos sobre tuberculose, viroses prevalentes nos trópicos, saúde dos viajantes ou populações migrantes e sistemas de serviços de saúde, que lhe conferem um forte cariz internacional no âmbito de redes e projetos em parceria.

O trabalho de investigação está intimamente associado a programas de doutoramento e mestrado, bem como à assessoria técnica aos ministérios da saúde, em Portugal e outros países. A qualidade do seu desempenho foi reconhecida pela OMS, quando nos atribuiu o estatuto de Centro Colaborador para Políticas e Planeamento da Força de Trabalho em Saúde.

Desenvolvi no IHMT o meu projeto de doutoramento em Medicina Tropical de 2006 a 2010, o qual teve grande relevância para Angola, permitindo criar uma rotina de seguimento de doentes com infeção pelo VIH e também iniciar uma linha de investigação na resistência aos fármacos.

I developed in the IHMT my PhD project in Tropical Medicine from 2006 to 2010, which had great relevance for Angola, allowing to create a follow up routine for patients with HIV infection and also a research line in drug resistance.

Satisfaction and affection is what I feel for ISEGI-NOVA. Satisfaction, due to the quality of the syllabus, its teaching methods and its modern vision of what education should be, and due to the manifest professional development it brought to me. Affection, due to the new friendships and to the strength I found while reconciling studies – career – family, due to the teachers that left their mark on me, and due to the bonds that still stand today and to the new ones we are creating.

The NOVA School of Statistics and Information Management (ISEGI-NOVA) was founded in 1989 in response to the shortage of senior specialists in information management and the growing need for using new information technologies.

Installed on Campus Campolide, ISEGI-NOVA has an infrastructure equipped with the most modern information and teaching support technologies. Today, ISEGI-NOVA provides high level education to more than 700 students. The offer includes two bachelor degrees, six master degrees, including an Erasmus Mundus Master Course and a double degree European Master Course, a doctorate and several postgraduate courses.

ISEGI-NOVA develops research of excellence in information science and information systems. As a result of this activity annually produces over a hundred high-impact international journal papers and more than 50 master dissertations and doctoral theses.

ISEGI-NOVA also has a strong connection to society, having protocols and partnerships with more than one hundred public and private institutions, for which develops applied research, studies, projects and advanced training.

O Instituto Superior de Estatística e Gestão de Informação (ISEGI-NOVA) da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa foi fundado em 1989 como resposta à escassez de quadros superiores especialistas na gestão de informação e à necessidade crescente de utilização de novas tecnologias de informação.

Instalado no Campus de Campolide, o ISEGI-NOVA apresenta infraestruturas equipadas com as mais modernas tecnologias de informação e de suporte ao ensino. Hoje, o ISEGI-NOVA proporciona educação de elevado nível a mais de 700 alunos. A sua oferta inclui duas licenciaturas, seis mestrados, incluindo um mestrado Erasmus Mundus e um mestrado duplo Europeu, um doutoramento e diversas pós-graduações.

Teria sido muito mais difícil voltar a Portugal depois de 5 anos na Escandinávia, não fora a excelente forma como fui recebido no ITQB: desde a simpatia e o apoio do Prof. António Xavier até à camaradagem e ambiente estimulante que encontrei, primeiro como um dos “teóricos” do grupo Cristalografia de Proteínas e depois no “nosso” grupo de Modelação Molecular.

It would have been very hard to come back to Portugal, after 5 years in Scandinavia, if it hadn’t been for the excellent reception I experienced at ITQB: from the warmth and support of Professor António Xavier to the friendly and stimulating environment I found, first as one of the theoreticians of the Protein Crystallography Group and later in “our own” Molecular Modeling Group.

The Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica (ITQB) is a research and advanced training institute of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.

Its mission is to carry out scientific research and postgraduate teaching in chemistry, the life sciences, and associated technologies, while also serving the community and performing university extension activities for the promotion of science and technology.

ITQB coordinates one of the largest “Laboratórios Associados” in Portugal, which also includes the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, the Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica and the Centro de Estudos de Doenças Crónicas.

ITQB’s highly multidisciplinary nature makes it a leading centre for the advanced training of researchers in Portugal. Currently, it hosts 62 independent laboratories grouped into five research divisions and comprising a staff of more than 400 researchers, with different backgrounds and research interests. They benefit from outstanding research facilities, equipment, and scientific support services, some of which are unique in the country.

O Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica (ITQB) é um centro de investigação e formação avançada da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.

Tem como missão desenvolver investigação científica e educação pós-graduada nas áreas da química, biologia e tecnologias associadas, ao mesmo tempo que serve a comunidade e desenvolve atividades de extensão universitária para a promoção da ciência e da tecnologia.

O Mestrado em Gestão da Saúde da ENSP ofereceu-me uma formação de base sólida em muitos dos domínios inerentes à gestão de organizações de saúde, acompanhando sempre todas as problemáticas atuais do setor da saúde. Para além disso, a componente curricular opcional permitiu-me adaptar e planear a minha formação de acordo com as minhas preferências e necessidades. O empenho no ensino e sabedoria de todo o corpo docente foi determinante para a minha preparação, entusiasmo e motivação para seguir o meu percurso profissional.

The Master in Health Management from Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública, offered me a solid basic training in many fields related to the management of health organizations, always following all the current issues in the health sector. In addition, the optional curricular plan of the training course allowed me to adapt my training plan according to my preferences and needs. The commitment to education and wisdom of the entire faculty was determinant in my preparation, enthusiasm and motivation to follow my career.

The National School of Public Health (ENSP) offers post-graduate teaching and research in health related areas, namely in public health and health policy and management.

Founded in 1966, the ENSP is a pioneer institution in public health teaching. It was integrated in NOVA in 1994.

The ENSP invests in health promotion and in the management and innovation of health organizations. Through a broad network of national and international partnerships, it focuses on education, research and community actions.

The School has an experienced and highly reputed academic staff, integrated in various scientific areas such as Epidemiology and Statistics, Environmental and Occupational Health, Health Promotion, Health Policy, Health Management, Health Law and Health Economics.

The ENSP hosts each year around 170 new students for courses of more than one year duration (doctorate, masters, specialization). The School’s students come varied undergraduate backgrounds, such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy, health technologies, management, economics and psychology.

A Escola Nacional de Saúde Pública (ENSP) é uma instituição vocacionada para estudos pós-graduados e investigação na área da saúde.

Criada em 1966, a ENSP é uma instituição pioneira no ensino da saúde pública. A Escola foi integrada na NOVA em 1994.

A ENSP investe hoje na promoção da saúde e na gestão e inovação das organizações de saúde, no campo do ensino, na investigação e nas ações na comunidade, através de uma ampla rede de parcerias nacionais e internacionais.

A Escola tem um corpo docente experiente e reconhecido, integrado em áreas disciplinares muito diversas, tais como Epidemiologia e Estatística, Saúde Ambiental e Ocupacional, Promoção da Saúde, Políticas e Gestão em Saúde e Economia da Saúde.

A ENSP recebe anualmente cerca de 170 novos alunos para cursos com duração superior a um ano (doutoramento, mestrado e especialização). Os alunos da Escola têm formação de base muito diversa, nomeadamente medicina, enfermagem, ciências farmacêuticas, tecnologias da saúde, gestão, economia, psicologia e outras.

The mission of the Social Welfare Services of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (SASNOVA) is to guarantee that no student is excluded from the university due to financial difficulties, thus providing direct social support to 1st and 2nd cycle students, namely scholarships, to underprivileged students, and emergency support, given to students whose socioeconomic situation changes during the course of the academic year.

SASNOVA provide indirect social support to all NOVA students in the areas of Food Services, through canteens and cafeterias located in NOVA’s campi; Accommodation, in the university Halls of Residence, preferentially occupied by Portuguese scholarship students and foreign students on exchange programmes; Sport, supporting the presence of students in university championships and organizing sports events; Culture, supporting students initiatives and promoting their own activities, namely NOVA’s Photography Competition; Health Services, providing appointments in general practice, psychiatry, clinical psychology and nutrition.

SASNOVA also ensure the management of the brand NOVA UNIVERSITY, in coordination with “Loja da Universidade”, promoting NOVA’s image through merchandising.

Os Serviços de Acção Social da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (SASNOVA) têm por missão garantir que nenhum estudante é excluído da universidade por incapacidade financeira, concedendo para tal apoios sociais diretos a alunos do 1.º e 2.º Ciclos, nomeadamente Bolsas de Estudo, atribuídas a alunos carenciados, e Auxílios de Emergência, atribuídos a alunos cuja situação socioeconómica se altere no decorrer do ano letivo.

Os SASNOVA concedem ainda apoios sociais indirectos a todos os alunos da NOVA, nas áreas da Alimentação, através de cantinas e cafetarias localizadas nos campi da NOVA; Alojamento, nas residências universitárias ocupadas preferencialmente por alunos bolseiros deslocados e por estudantes estrangeiros de programas de mobilidade; Desporto, apoiando a presença de alunos em campeonatos universitários e organizando eventos desportivos; Cultura, apoiando iniciativas de alunos e concebendo actividades próprias, nomeadamente o Concurso de Fotografia da NOVA; Saúde, proporcionando consultas médicas de clínica geral, psiquiatria, psicologia clínica e de nutrição.

Os SASNOVA asseguram ainda a gestão da marca NOVA UNIVERSITY, em coordenação com a “Loja da Universidade”, promovendo a imagem da NOVA através do merchandising.

Galardoado com o Prémio Nobel da Economia (2008) pelas suas contribuições para a nova teoria do comércio internacional, Paul Krugman é Professor na Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs da Universidade de Princeton e Centenary Professor na London School of Economics. Autor de dezenas de livros e centenas de artigos, foi Ford International Professor of International Economics no Massachussets Institute of Technology (MIT), onde se doutorou em 1976, tendo também ensinado nas universidades de Yale e Stanford, além de ter desempenhado funções de assessor económico na Casa Branca.

Paul Krugman is an economist and 2008 Nobel laureate for his contributions to the new theory of international trade. He is a Professor at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University and Centenary Professor at the London School of Economics. Author of dozens of books and hundreds of articles, Krugman was Ford International Professor of International Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he obtained his doctorate in 1976, having also taught at the universities of Yale and Stanford, and acted as economic adviser to the White House.

Professor Emeritus da Universidade Paul Sabatier (Toulouse), conta com uma carreira académica e científica de 40 anos nesta universidade. Contribuiu para o desenvolvimento das Ciências Geológicas nomeadamente na área da Estratigrafia Sequencial, tendo colaborado com o Centro de Investigação em Ciência e Engenharia Geológica (CICEGe) da FCT. Jacques Rey chefiou o Comité Francês de Estratigrafia, foi Vice-Presidente da Sociedade Francesa de Geologia e integrou o Comité Nacional de Geologia de França. Recebeu os Prémios Fontannes e Bourcart e é Officier de L’Ordre des Palmes Académiques.

Jacques Rey devoted 40 years of his career to Toulousain University Paul Sabatier where he is Professor Emeritus. His research focussed mainly in Sequential Stratigraphy and he collaborated with the Centro de Investigação em Ciência e Engenharia Geológica (CICEGe) of FCT. He was President of the French National Committee on Stratigraphy, Vice-President of the Geological Society of France and integrated the Scientific Committee of the Geological Society of France. Jacques Rey received the Prix Fontannes, the Prix Bourcart and is Officier de L’Ordre des Palmes Académiques.

É Professor jubilado da Universidade de Southampton onde desempenhou funções de Vice-Chanceler até 2009. No Imperial College em Londres foi Professor e Presidente do Departamento de Engenharia Química, Pró-Reitor e Vice-Reitor. Especializado em Termodinâmica, é licenciado e doutorado em Engenharia Química pela Universidade de Exeter, recebeu cinco doutoramentos honoris causa, um deles pela Universidade de Lisboa, e é autor de uma extensa obra científica. William Wakeham integra o Conselho Geral e preside ao Conselho de Qualidade do Ensino da NOVA.

William Wakeham was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton until 2009. He was Professor and Director of the Chemical Engineering Department of Imperial College in London, where he was also Pro-Rector and Deputy-Rector. Specialized in Thermodynamics, he received his bachelor and doctorate degrees from University of Exeter. He has honorary degrees from five universities (one from Universidade de Lisboa) and is author of a large number of books and articles. At NOVA, William Wakeham is one of the external members of the Conselho Geral and heads the Conselho de Qualidade do Ensino.

Entre os seus projetos de Engenharia contam-se a pala do Pavilhão de Portugal na Expo 98, o Centro Cultural de Belém, a reconstrução da zona ardida do Chiado e o reforço do túnel ferroviário do Rossio. Segadães Tavares é Professor Convidado do Departamento de Engenharia Civil da FCT. Licenciado em Engenharia Civil pela Universidade do Porto, foi agraciado como Grande Oficial da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique, recebeu o Prémio SECIL de Engenharia Civil e o Prémio Outstanding Structure Award da International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering pela ampliação da pista do Aeroporto do Funchal.

António Segadães Tavares was responsible for the Engineering projects of the cover of the Portuguese Pavilion square for Expo’98, the Centro Cultural de Belém and the reconstruction of Chiado. He graduated in Engineering from Universidade do Porto and currently he is Invited Professor at the Civil Engineering Department of FCT. Segadães Tavares is Grande Oficial da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique, received the Prémio SECIL de Engenharia Civil, and the Outstanding Structure Award of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering for the extension of the runway of Funchal Airport.

aNTóNIo SEGaDãES TavaRES | 3 de abril

É Presidente da Fundação Champalimaud desde 2004, por indicação testamentária de António Champalimaud. Licenciou-se em Direito pela Universidade de Lisboa, onde exerceu as funções de Assistente. Leonor Beleza foi Secretária de Estado da Presidência do Conselho de Ministros, Secretária de Estado da Segurança Social, Ministra da Saúde, Vice-Presidente do PSD, Deputada e Vice-Presidente da Assembleia da República. O Centro Champalimaud visa ser uma instituição multidisciplinar, translacional e de referência no campo da Biomedicina, estando também envolvido na formação pós-graduada em Medicina.

Leonor Beleza was invited by António Champalimaud to launch the Fundação Champalimaud in 2004. She obtained her degree in Law at Universidade de Lisboa where she was Assistant Professor. Leonor Beleza was Secretary of State of the Council of Ministers’ Presidency and of Social Security, Minister of Health, Member of Parliament and its Vice-President for two terms. The Champalimaud Centre aims to be a reference in research in Biomedicine and is also committed to postgraduate training in Medicine.
