Don’t take:

Food that is crumbly

Food that squirts eg, tomato, unless you can cut it up

Astronauts can eat just about everything they eat back home on Earth.

How is food stored in the space shuttle?

Fresh food

On short trips that only last a few days astronauts can have fresh food and vegetables.

Powdered

Just add water.

Freeze dried

Freeze dried food is quickly frozen then all the water is sucked out of it. When you want to eat it you add water.

Heat treatedThe food is heat treated. It is heated really hot to kill all the germs. Then it is cooled down and put into packages

Can you cook in space?

In the space kitchen

A space shuttle has a kitchen with hot and cold water it also has an oven.

Just add water and heat!

You have to add water to powdered or freeze-dried food. It takes 20-30 minutes to add water and to cook the meal.

No washing up!

The cold and hot water is not for washing-up it is done with special wipes.

How do astronauts eat?

Gravity

There is no gravity in the space shuttle so everything floats. Astronauts use a toehold to stop floating away while they eat.

Gravity

They use forks and spoons, but the food has to be moist enough to stick together.

Velcro is used to hold bowls, trays and cutlery in place.

Food is served on a tray.

Magnets, springs and Velcro hold the cutlery and food packets to the tray.

Drinks

Drinks are kept in pouches with built in straws.
