A Word from your PTSA President
Dear Parents, Teachers, and Students:
The PTSA joins our school community in mourning the tragic loss of one of our own in De-
cember. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. We welcome the spirit of empathy
and kindness that has been evident in the wake of this tragedy, and hope to help nurture it
and to see it grow.
One way we are doing that is by managing the new “Closet of Support”. This is a place at
DHS where students in need can get all sorts of helpful things, from deodorant to blan-
kets. To learn more, email me or contact the guidance office.
On a happier note, we welcomed the excellent turnout at our January monthly
meeting. The discussion there included a robust exchange about the math curriculum and
teaching approaches, sparked by our excellent new Advocacy Chair, Capri Ebright. Capri
will be hosting the first meeting of this newly-forming committee on February 21 at 6 PM,
immediately before our 7 PM monthly PTSA meeting. I will be there, and of course all are
welcome at both meetings. Please join us!
Read on for lots of important information, especially about one of Dulaney’s biggest and
most-anticipated annual events: the Grad Gala. Please consider helping out with the Gala,
our after-prom party, however you can. This wonderful event needs many, many contribu-
tions of time and money.
Meanwhile, thanks for all you do, in spite of the woefully-inadequate climate control and
brown water, to make our school a thriving, supportive, respectful environment.

A Note from the Editor
Dear Readers,
As a mother of two teenage boys I am always looking for ways to protect them from harm. But now that they are mostly grown, there are things that are starting to fall outside of my control. I take every opportunity I have to learn about the dangers they now face, many of them so different than the ones I encountered during my teenage years.
One of those dangers is their developing brains. A Google search can provide plenty of infor-mation on how unstable a teenager’s brain can be, and why they are so prone to doing things unexpectedly (think hormones!).
This is why it is so important to be aware and prepared to recognize the signs of mental health issues. Below are some of my preferred resources about the most pressing topics.
The Youth Mental Health First Aid is a course that I highly recommend. I took this course last year and it has been a great tool for understanding my boys. I recommend for teachers and caregivers! https://mhfamaryland.org/

AP Photography Student Vladimir Leung and Advanced Photography Student Jilly Corbett were chosen to show their work in a juried exhibition, The Creative Voyage, at the Balti-more County Arts Guild. From the School Counseling Department
To apply for federal student aid, such as federal grants, work-study, and loans, you need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form on or before March 1, 2018. Completing and sub-mitting the FAFSA form is free and easier than ever. Many states and colleges use your FAFSA information to determine your eligibility for state and school aid, and some private financial aid providers may use your FAFSA information to determine whether you qualify for their aid. All students received their PSAT score reports in English class. Encour-age your students to link their PSAT/NMSQT results to Khan Academy to access their SAT practice plans. See your student’s score report for instructions on how to link to Khan Academy.
Counselors did Naviance lessons with 10th and 11th grade students to get them thinking about careers and colleges. We also updated their 6-year plans. You can access the 6-year plan in your student’s Naviance account.
Counselors will do classroom presentations on college planning with juniors in March. Save the date for our College Information Night on March 15 at 7:00 PM in the Classic Cafeteria. We will review the col-lege search process and application process.

Scholarships
2018-2019 Maryland Senatorial Scholarship Applications Now Open Who may apply: Current high school seniors and full-time and part-time, degree-seeking un-dergraduate and graduate students in all majors. Students attending a private career school may also apply. Senatorial Scholarships may only be awarded to students applying for admis-sion to an institution of higher learning within the State of Maryland, unless unique major sta-tus is approved for a non-Maryland school by the Maryland Higher Education Commission. How to apply: Complete and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and then contact your State Senator, which can be obtained by visiting the Maryland State Archive’s website. If residency is in my district, the 42nd legislative district, please fill out this application (PDF). When to apply: Complete and file the FAFSA by March 1. Contact your State Senator for fur-ther instructions. Award Information: Senatorial Scholarships are awarded for four (4) years or until the comple-tion of your degree, whichever comes first. Once awarded a Senatorial Scholarship, it will be automatically renewed each year as long you take a minimum of six credit hours a semester. If you have already received a Senatorial Scholarship, you do not need to complete another ap-plication.

Closet of Support
DHS now has a “Closet of Support” filled with most needed
items that are free for our students in need. If a student is in
need, she/he can contact any school staff to be referred. Staff
members are also encouraged to discretely refer students.
Donations of the following items are accepted. Please only do-
nate NEW items, label it “Closet of Support” and drop at the
school office. Travel sizes accepted and welcomed.
Toiletries (body wash, floss, men’s deodorant. women’s deo-
dorant, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, tam-
pons, lip balms, lotions, hair brushes, combs, etc.)
School supplies (alarm clocks, backpacks, binders, dividers,
pens, pencils, scientific calculators, rulers, pencil cases, graph
We Want to Hear From You! Take the Stakeholder Satisfaction Survey Today!
Every year, we ask you to take the BCPS Stakeholder Survey. Last year, BCPS used your responses to shape our budget, staffing, and programs. At Dulaney, we used the re-sults to inform our School Progress Plan in the areas of climate, mathematics, and reading. Once again, we need your voice. The survey only takes about five minutes or less, is anonymous, and is available in 16 languages for students, parents, and community members. If you are also a BCPS staff member, or if you have children in more than one school, you are encouraged to take the survey more than once to reflect these different ex-periences. The survey is available at www.bcps.org from January 29 through March 2 via phone, tablet, or computer. Let us know if you would like to take the survey at school. We want you to participate. Your voice matters!
Student/Parent Advocacy Committee
The role of the advocacy committee is to represent the voice of our parent and student
community and take a stand to accomplish positive changes for our children and fami-
lies. Our goal is to serve you, the families that make up the Dulaney High School com-
munity and your Dulaney student.
We want every one of our children to reach his/her potential to its fullest. This can be
accomplished by providing a supportive and strong learning environment and a school
environment that actively strives to teach our children at its highest level and offers
support for social events as well.
We encourage you to bring your issues to us so that we can research and address them
as appropriate. We will have a meeting on February 21 at 6 pm! Please let me know if
you have any concerns that you think should be brought to the attention of the advoca-

GRAD GALA NEWS
Dear Dulaney Parents, Guardians & Friends of Dulaney, (from all grades) The 2018 Grad Gala will soon be here. The committee has been working all year to prepare for this event, in order to give our children a safe and inviting after prom party. Attached is a newsletter to update you on what’s happening. We are still looking for many volunteers to help the night of the gala. You can volunteer your time. You can make a donation. You can donate gifts or prizes. You can attend a restaurant fundraiser. There are so many ways to help. So Please… Get in-volved, make a donation, and attend our exciting fundraising events. We have two major fundraisers coming up and they are the April Insanity and Senior Banner Sales. There is also monthly Restaurant Nights. If you have not joined us for a restaurant night yet, it is a great time to come out and meet other Dulaney families. Dulaney Launches AP Capstone Diploma Program
Dulaney will offer AP Seminar – the first of two courses for the AP Capstone Diploma – in
the fall of 2018. Maria Hiaasen, who teaches AP 11 English and GT Speech, will teach the
course.
Ours is one of approximately 1,500 schools worldwide to implement the AP Capstone™ di-
ploma program―an innovative program that allows students to develop skills that matter
most for college success, such as research, collaboration, and communication. The program
consists of two courses taken in sequence: AP® Seminar and a subsequent course, AP Re-
search, which will be launched here in 2019.
Developed in direct response to feedback from higher education faculty and college admis-
sion officers, AP Capstone complements the in-depth, subject-specific study of other Ad-
vanced Placement® courses and exams.
The AP Seminar course, taken in grades 10, 11, or 12, equips students with the ability to
look at academic or real-world issues from multiple perspectives. Through a variety of ma-
terials—articles to research studies to foundational and philosophical texts—students tack-
le complex questions; understand and evaluate opposing viewpoints; interpret and synthe-
size information; and construct, communicate, and defend evidence-based arguments. Stu-
dents are assessed through a team project and presentation, an individual project and
presentation, and an end-of-course written exam.
By tapping into students’ personal interests, AP Capstone gives students from a wide range
of backgrounds an entry point into stimulating coursework.

Engineering and Technical Programs Spotlight
FIRST was founded in 1989 to inspire young people's interest and participation in sci-
ence and technology. FIRST designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young
people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineer-
ing, and math, while building self confidence, knowledge, and life skills. Combining the
excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. We call FIRST Robotics
Competition the ultimate Sport for the Mind. High-school student participants call it
“the hardest fun you’ll ever have.” Under strict rules, limited resources, and an intense
six-week time limit, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team
"brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a
difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It’s as close to real-world engineer-
ing as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to
guide each team. Each season ends with an exciting FIRST Championship.
In the VEX Robotics Competition, presented by the Robotics Education & Competition
Foundation, teams of students are tasked with designing and building a robot to play
against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge. Classroom STEM concepts
are put to the test as students learn lifelong skills in teamwork, leadership, communica-
tions, and more. Tournaments are held year-round at the regional, state, and national
levels and culminate at the VEX Robotics World Championship each April!
We are seeking sponsorship for the Dulaney High School Robotics team as a part of the
FIRST and VEX program. We will be providing nearly 50 team members with the oppor-
tunity to travel to cities like Washington DC, Richmond, and Pittsburgh for Regional
Competitions, and to Detroit, MI for our Championship Competition. Support of our
team offers many benefits to the community. Local students will have the chance to
learn and develop many new skills. They will be learning not only engineering and de-
sign skills, but will also be developing leadership, business, public speaking, coaching,
and communication skills. We are looking to provide these students the necessary skills
to become the next leaders in our community and beyond.

child home if they have a fever and they must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of
fever reducing medications before returning to school.

Peer Tutoring
Attached you will find forms for both the Tutor and Tutee which the STUDENTS need to com-
plete to enroll in the program.
Here are a few points about the program:
• New Hours (Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday – 7:00-7:30am & 2:20-3:30pm)
• We are in need of strong academic students whom feel obliged to give back and help,
please encourage them to sign up
• As discussed in prior assemblies, encourage students to ask for help as we have this awe-
some program to assist
As with any program, all participants must actually be enrolled in the program. The Peer Tu-
toring hours are not open to the public UNLESS they are within the Library hours posted origi-
nally. Another misconception is that we have tutors waiting for students to come in for help,
this is not the case as all students are paired prior and use the library as common area to
meet.

Junior Interview
Days
March 2018 The School to Career and English Departments are hosting Junior Interview Days
this spring. This is an annual event in which every student in the junior class partici-
pates in a mock interview.
At Dulaney we strive to make the interview experience as authentic as possible by in-
viting members of the local business community to conduct the interviews with our
students. We feel that this experience is worthwhile for all students – whether they are
planning to look for a summer job or participate in the college interview process.
We strongly encourage parents, alumni and community members to consider volun-
teering for this event. Interviews will be on March 21 and March 22, from 8am –
11:00.

The Baltimore Science Fair
March 24 & 25, 2018 at Towson University
The Baltimore Science Fair is a Math, Biology, Physical Science, and En-
gineering research based competition open to all middle and high
school students in public, private, parochial, and home schools in Balti-
more, Carroll, Cecil, Harford, and Howard Counties and Baltimore Poly-
technic Institute in Baltimore City.
Over 150 awards are given out each year by organizations such as the US
Army, National Space Society, US Public Health Services, NSA, Raytheon
Solipsys, and the US Navy. There are certificates, medallions, cash priz-
es ranging from $25-$500, etc and even a scholarship to Towson Universi-
ty.
Grand Prize Winners (high school students only) and their teachers go
on to compete at ISEF. The top 10% of middle school student projects
are entered into the Broadcom Masters National competition with an
opportunity to become a national finalist at the Washington DC fair.
