Link Your Kroger Card to RHS PTSAIt’s easy and free!

Kroger is giving away $1 million to local charities! Help us get a piece of the pie by linking your KrogerPlus card to RHS PTSA today. If you were one of the proud RHS families who helped PTSA earn $1088 last year, THANK YOU!

Each April 30th, Kroger deletes all Neighbor to Neighbor information and begins open enrollment for the next year. The 2012-2013 enrollment period is underway and continues through December 31, 2012. If you linked your KrogerPlus card to PTSA for the 2011-2012 school year, you will need to re-link your card this year.

You can link your KrogerPlus card to PTSA by presenting the barcode below to the cashier the next time you check out. The cashier will scan your card and then the barcode to link you to our organization. If you prefer to use the self check-out lanes, scan the barcode after you have scanned your KrogerPlus card. It’s that simple! Once the process is complete, you will be enrolled as a supporter for the remainder of the current program year! Every time you shop, a portion of your sale will be contributed to the Neighbor to Neighbor fund. We will be awarded a percentage of the $1 million payout that reflects our number of qualifying purchases made within the program year.

Hurry! The deadline to link your KrogerPlus card to RHS PTSA is December 31, 2012.

If you would like more information on the Neighbor to Neighbor program for RHS, contact Cheri Dixon at [email protected]. Additional information is available at www.krogerneighbortoneighbor.com.

Kroger cashier: Please scan customer’s KrogerPlus Card at the beginning of the order, and then scan the above barcode. The customer’s KrogerPlus Card is now enrolled in the Kroger Neighbor to Neighbor Donation Program.

RHS Parent/Teacher/Student Association

Welcome back, on behalf of the Ryan High School PTSA! We look forward to a great 2012-2013 school year. We are so proud of our Ryan students, who not only exemplify excellence in academics, but in fine arts, athletics and service within our community. Ryan High School truly is the “Home of Champions!” We are also proud to have an administration, faculty and staff who are dedicated to our students’ welfare and success.

Parent involvement is essential to student success, and we have many areas where RHS parents can volunteer. For 2011-2012, Ryan High School had the distinct honor (again!) as the Denton ISD campus with the most volunteer hours logged! We would like to continue that distinction this year, but in order to do so, we need your help. If you are interested in getting involved either as a volunteer and/or with the PTSA board, please contact Jenifer Fuller, volunteer coordinator, at [email protected], and she can

help you get plugged in. You are also welcome to attend one of our monthly PTSA board meetings, held on the first Monday of each month at 11:30am in the conference room near the main office. We would love to have you.

Please consider joining PTSA this year if you have not already done so, especially if you are a senior. The dues help fund scholarships, staff appreciation, and the newsletter. Also, each year the PTSA awards senior scholarships, and in order to be eligible to apply, you must be a member by October 1, 2012. Membership is $6.50. Look for a membership application in this newsletter and sign up today.

Sincerely,Karen Fortune, RHS PTSA President, [email protected]

We are excited to have the use this year of a new college and career preparation program called Naviance, which we will be introducing to our students throughout the fall. We will begin the program with seniors in September, followed by freshmen in October, and juniors and sophomores in November. You will be getting additional

information as implementation continues. Also in September, academic counselors

will be meeting individually with each senior to talk about what to do as they face the last steps in preparing for their future education and/or career. We will send notices to the seniors about a week ahead of time, and if parents are available, they should feel free to join seniors at the time listed. These appointments will last about 15 minutes and will be scheduled back-to-back, so we must make sure to start each one right on time!

Seniors and juniors should also plan to attend the NorTex College Fair on Thursday, Sept. 13, at the UNT Coliseum. Over 200 colleges will be represented, and there will also be presentations on financial aid opportunities. To register for the conference, go to www.gotocollegefairs.org.

Freshmen will be completing their Career Scope assessment in September as well. This program is used to help freshmen determine some career options that meet with their interests and skill sets. It is the first step that will lead them towards their Naviance training and resources.

Another new element students and parents can expect will be the Counseling Department’s monthly “themes.” These are topics about which we will provide activities and guidance to all students. See the list of themes below, and please feel free to offer any suggestions for future topics.

Save Now for 2013 Advanced Placement Exams

Of this year’s juniors and seniors, fifty-two have already passed one or more AP exams. Students can receive a minimum of three college credits and, in some cases, as many as 22 college credits for each test they pass. Each college has different guidelines so each student should contact the college of their choice to determine the credit policy of the college or check for the credit policy of a college at http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/apcreditpolicy/index.jsp.

Ryan High School offers Advanced Placement classes in the following subjects: Art, Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, English Language, English Literature, Environmental Science, European History, French, German, Government, Latin, Music Theory, Physics, Psychology, Spanish Language, Statistics, U. S. History, and World History.

The cost for students planning to take Advanced Placements exams this year will be $90 for each AP test they plan to take in May. The cost per test for students on free or reduced lunch will be $29 per test. Students must order and pay for these tests by February 7, 2013. The cost per test is subject to change if state funding increases or decreases during the school year.

Students enrolled in Advanced Placement classes this year are scheduled to take their AP tests during the two-week period beginning May 6. The 2013 AP testing calendar is also posted on the website below.

Students or parents wishing more information about the Advanced Placement program at Ryan High School should visit the testing website, www.dentonisd.org/rhstesting or contact Charlotte Scroggs, RHS Testing Coordinator at 940.369.3135.

On Wednesday, October 17, the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test will be given to all 10th and 11th graders currently enrolled in English 2, English 3 or English 4 at Ryan High School. The test will be given during the school day and at no cost to RHS students.

This test is one of the most important tests that a student will take in preparation for college. Students who take the PSAT/NMSQT exam in their junior year are automatically entered into the National Merit scholarship competition. This exam is the only way to become a National Merit Scholar and/or to be recognized as a high-achieving Hispanic or African American scholar. Denton ISD also gives the test to sophomores to help prepare them for the test during their junior year.

From the PSAT test, students will be given a comparable SAT score that will allow them to

see where they are compared to all of the other students across the nation with whom they are competing for college entrance, scholarships, and financial aid. The students will also have access to My College QuickStart, a free, personalized college plan that students can use to improve their academic skills, to improve their SAT or ACT college entrance exam scores, and to research colleges. My College QuickStart also allows students to research careers and help them determine a career path. Additionally, student’s results will be sent to colleges so they can be contacted for scholarships.

Students or parents wishing more information about the PSAT exam should visit the testing website, www.dentonisd.org/rhstesting or contact Charlotte Scroggs, RHS Testing Coordinator, at 940.369.3135.

PSAT/NMSQT will be given on October 17

Parking Students may park on campus with a valid

permit. Permits are $25 (until Oct. 31). The student will need to show a valid driver’s license along with completing the form (available in the office or Room 131). Parking permits are handled in Room 131 before and after school.

Hello and welcome back for another school year! My name is Anne Scaggs, and I am the Student Assistance Counselor here at Billy Ryan High School. I am a Licensed Master Level Social Worker with 22 years of experience in the field of social work; the past 11 years have been spent working within the educational system. I recently began working on my doctorate and will soon complete my supervision to advance my social work licensure to the clinical level. This will be my 6th year back at Denton Ryan, and I am really excited about the upcoming school year. I would like to take a few minutes of your time to explain the role that I have here at Denton Ryan. First and foremost, I am here to support the students in whatever way best helps them be successful while here on campus. I work with students who are dealing with many different issues ranging from stress, anxiety, depression, truancy, family problems, anger management, and a multitude of other issues that may interfere with a student’s ability to focus in class. I conduct group sessions and individual sessions on campus during the school day, but I have been able to develop a schedule

that not only supports school attendance and class attendance, it also minimizes the student’s time out of class. On average, students participating in group sessions miss approximately 40 minutes of one class every 6 weeks, and students participating in individual sessions miss 30 minutes of one class every 8 weeks. Students are referred to my program by parents, friends, and staff members. My program is voluntary and consent forms are sent home for parent signatures if and when a student wants to participate in the program.

Although the majority of my time is spent working with students, I am also required to speak to our students about bully prevention, teen dating violence, and the dangers of drug and alcohol use and abuse. Over the course of the school year, I will be sending out information to you parents regarding those same topics through the PTSA Newsletter as well! If you have any questions or concerns, my door is always open or you can contact me at 940-369-3028 or via email at [email protected] .

Amnesty International is a worldwide organization whose purpose is to make people aware of human rights violations that are occurring around the world, typically the imprisonment of those who have done no more than spoken out against a tyrannical and abusive government. Letters regarding a recent infringement are written by Amnesty members and sent to those responsible or those who are able to take appropriate action.

Inundating them with mail is the method most often used by Amnesty to bring about a prisoner’s freedom or a bettering of conditions.

Amnesty International acts on behalf of political prisoners who have not advocated or used violence. These are people whose incarceration is politically motivated, or based on ethnic origin, sex, color, economic, birth, or other status. These are normal people just exercising their rights to live.

Come write for human rights! See Ms. Long in room 269 (sponsor).

The Choir Department would like to welcome all student singers to the new school year. Please note these important concert/performance dates: Fall Concert October 22nd, Winter Concert December 17th, Pre-UIL Performance March 26th, and Spring Concert May 28th. These performances are mandatory assessments and we also hope you enjoy the music. Please support your student’s hard work by attending their choir concerts. I also encourage parents to become active in the choir booster club. Please contact Booster President Julie Kajihara at [email protected] if you would like more information. The full choir calendar can be found at the choir web page and on our Charms web page. All student information including financial statements for choir can be found on the Ryan Choir Charms web page. To find your students information please follow these instructions:

Log on to www.charmsoffice.com and click “ENTER” at the top right corner. Locate the “PARENT/STUDENT/MEMBERS LOGIN” section of the web page. Login to your child’s program account using the following login: ryanhschoir. OrchestraThe wonderful

students who make up the orchestras of Ryan HS are ready to have another great year! We have a strong group of returning upperclassmen as well as some very

talented new students, and we are excited to continue our tradition of excellence and of representing our school at the highest level as we move to 5A. As the semester begins, the focus is on All-Region and All-State music (auditions are in October), as well as on preparing for our first concert, to be held on October 16. The high school region groups will be performing such repertoire as Night on Bald Mountain, by Mussorgsky and famously depicted in the original Disney movie Fantasia, as well as “Mars” from The Planets, written by Gustav Holst. Their clinician will be Dr. Sandra Dackow, of New Jersey. She is a very famous pedagogue, conductor, and arranger of music for student orchestras. We are also happy this fall to welcome a student teacher, Ms. Segapeli. She is a UNT student from El Paso, whose main instrument is violin.

ASL We are very excited at Ryan

High School as we gear up for another fun year with American Sign Language Club. We will meet in September to set a monthly club schedule and elect

officers for 2012-2013. If you are interested in being involved in this club, please come by Room 212 to visit with Mrs. Campbell. We have silent dinners every month, and these are a great way to get involved, meet new friends, and practice what you are learning in class. ASL Club is an exciting place to put your skills to use in real world settings and interact with deaf individuals in our community. I hope you will consider joining us this year!

For more information you can contact Shannon Campbell at 369-3058 or [email protected].

Drive 4UR School And Help Us Raise Money!

PTSA and Renaissance has partnered with Bill Utter Ford to bring you the Drive 4UR School program on Saturday, November 3rd in conjunction with our annual Arts and Crafts Show here at RHS. While you are here checking out the great food, art, and crafts, be sure to stop by to test drive a Ford. For every vehicle test driven by a licensed adult 18 or over that day, Ford will donate $20 to RHS PTSA/Renaissance! So, mark your calendar and plan to Drive 4UR School that day.

Do you LOVE words? If so, UIL Spelling and Vocabulary is the

organization for you. We meet weekly to study together. We also compete in Academic UIL meets. Aren’t into speaking in front of people? No problem! Our meets are written or computer tests that do not involve standing up and spelling words out loud. The first meeting will be September 12th at 4:15. See you there!

Willkommen Beim German Club! The German program at Ryan has a great new freshmen generation coming in. There are three

German 1 classes this year. We hope to have a strong German Club, many activities and many fun meetings. Of course we will go to Dallas and see a Mavericks game and meet Dirk Nowitzki like we do every year. We acquired several new German movies that we will watch with the Club and in German 3 and 4.

We also hope to start an exchange program during this school year. Our German students would visit Denton next spring and Ryan students would visit their counterparts in the Frankfurt area during the next summer. It is a great opportunity to live in a foreign country for a while, interact with the people and speak the language. Please contact Mr. Dettmer for more information about this.

Ryan offers the whole language program from level 1 through AP 4. World language AP courses are college level and are vital for students who want to apply at top universities. Our German Club invites everyone interested in German language, culture, sports, and history. We usually meet once a month on a Wednesday after school in Mr. Dettmer’s classroom for games, food and movies. Students at Ryan can also get a German pen pal and communicate with a teenager in Europe.

The German Club of Ryan High

Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. Ryan High School will collect the aluminum pull tabs from beverage cans to help sick children at the Ronald McDonald House. It’s so easy and doesn’t cost a thing to help! Simply remove and save the small pull tabs from your favorite beverages. When you are ready to bring them to RHS, drop them off at room 230 or leave them at the office for Mrs. Vallelian. Her youngest daughter is a cancer survivor who delivers them to the Ronald McDonald House. See her web page on our school’s website for more information. Thank you for making a big difference in the lives of very sick children and their families!
