How else will you be able to give clients legal advise on legal issues sooner or later developing in the relationship between companies doing business with each other over time. Contractual matters, interpreting contracts clauses in conflicts etc etc

“International trade is one of the fundamental corner stones in modern economy. Irrespective of whether you will perform your everyday work as a commercial lawyer at a company (even a company that only operate on a national level) or as a civil law barrister, you will most definitely need an understanding of how the International Trade Law system works.”
Nils Hallberg, LL.M.Technology and Security Risk Services

“International trade is important from a political point of view and therefore it is a high priority field on the agenda within most parts of the world (EU, USA, South America, South East Asia etc.) Due to the great powers and market impact of regions like the EU and the USA (along with important trade unions), development within international trade will affect national legislation (through out the world) to a large extent.”

“As international trade evolves through more efficient IT-solutions and other means for (legally binding) e-commerce, lawyers will - as I see it - need to have an understanding for IT-law, International Trade Law and regulatory issues concerning Information Security.”

“This development has, due to the rapid growth within the information technology and telecom sectors, accelerated over the last ten years, and my guess is we're still just at the beginning.”

“Another very important aspect - which one often tend to forget - is the importance of learning foreign languages (from an International Trade Law perspective, I'd say knowledge in English is vitally important. Spanish and German are also "on the rise").”

“My advice to law students - regardless of region or country of residence - is to give International Trade Law a fair chance in their studies. Not only might they happen to find that it is an interesting (and highly relevant) field - it might also take them places in the future they'd never thought possible!”

“Creo que el contexto obviamente de las negociaciones de ALCA tiene suficientes razones para hacer que cualquier abogado se interese en estos asuntos. Particularmente el nuevo mundo que se va a abrir después de la firma de este tipo de tratados para la resolución de conflictos por medio de mecanismos alternativos como el arbitraje.”

Business is becoming more and more international. Information, goods and people move across borders constantly. A lawyer must be familiar with not only corporate law but also specific rules and regulations in different areas such as taxation, family rights, insurance etc

Because you live in the global village and if you want to be a player on the international scene you have better knowing the rules out there in the jungle - they have already been set by the others. Your lawyers are to safeguard your investments abroad but doing so with a clear customer understanding in each individual market. It is the customer that sets the rules (and defines your brand), not you!

In my work as an IT-lawyer, although based in Sweden, I encounter situations concerning international law almost on a daily basis. Even if a client operates solely on a national level, we must often consider various aspects of EC Law when giving legal advice.

Many of our clients are multinational corporations with business operations all over the world. Regarding these clients - aside from international law - there is a rapidly growing need for legal expertise within IT-law (legally secure international trade over secure network solutions).

which would be the prioritaries aspects that
development countries (local governments and

Establish priorities Establish target countries - target groups Identify present strength/weaknesses - develop plan to
increase strength factors and eliminate weakness factors To increase knowledge of target countries Establish own representation in target countries such as
trade delegations (it might be sufficient to start with one person and then grow as business grows)
This 'menue' to start with and then add on new priorities as the first priorities have been carried out or eliminated

I think it is of vital importance for such countries to obtain conformity and consistency in their national legislations, i.e. it must be easy for foreign companies to foresee the legal consequences of doing business in such countries. This can e.g. be achieved through:

The main thing is to listen to understand the game and play it along with the needs and behavior of the customer (again!!!)They pay - you need them, but there is always another one offering a corresponding (most often a better) product/service. You must act more and professional compared to your competitors. By the way, how to exceed the expectations of your customers should a conflict occur? Never let a formalistic lawyer use muscles against your best salesmen - the satisfied customer!

4. It is a process of networking, relationship building as well as growing complexity. As Jaques Atali in France says it is a world growth without order, only chaos. And add to that what Dee W. Hock founder of Visa says, www.chaordic.org chaos and ordercombined shapes the organisations and communities of tomorrow. See also www.corporatelongitude.com

Globalization is yet in its initial stage as I see it. As unions such as the EU grow and start incorporating what used to be looked upon as "development countries" as fully worthy member states (Eastern Europe, the Baltic states etc.), globalization will boost and - in its wake - so will development within International Trade Law. I'm convinced that e-commerce will highly affect this development wherefore development within IT Law probably will be of equal interest to monitor in the future.

Globalization is a broad issue but one aspect is differences in wages and working conditions which will move production from Western Europe to China, Taiwan or Eastern Europe or from the US to Asia

It is there and will stay for a while. In the long run. But sometimes i wonder - everybody wants money for his work and not only be the exploited citizen of a development country. And the one who has become unemployed in the so called developed parts of the world and earlier made his income on the same production, might not have the money to buy said goods any longer!? God knows how it will end! The only sure thing is that the one who follows in any one's footsteps will never come first or prevail!
