Aims - Water-food-energy security and sustainable management of natural resources and ecosystems towards sustainable growth. - Sustainable management of the Mediterranean large marine ecosystem.

Objectives - Introduce the Water, Energy, Food and Ecosystems Nexus (WEFEN)

approach and catalyse action for its adoption. - Catalyse the policy process at national level as well as at transboundary basin

level for the implementation of the WEFEN. - Attract investments (development banks)

Regional Mediterranean Programme on Nexus

• Introduce the Nexus approach. • Explain the available Nexus approach tools and their usage. • Identify the interlinkages among the Nexus sectors and the resulting

trade-offs and benefits (include the views and knowledge of all stakeholder groups).

• Highlight the cost due to the lack of, and the opportunities arising from, integration.

• Facilitate the identification of necessary actions to address issues. • Facilitate the planning of necessary actions/investements.

Content

- Define the developmental priorities that are related to water, food and energy;

- Identify trade-offs among these sectors as well as among the riparian countries that hamper water and/or energy and/or food security as well as the developmental potentials;

- Identify potential benefits to be shared among sectors as well as among countries;

- Define the steps to be followed at transboundary level (basins) as means to address trade-offs, unsustainable practices and externalities, and enable benefit sharing.

• Capacity Building workshops

• Pilot Activities to demonstrate tangible practices and technologies for the implementation of Nexus approach.

• Priority Interventions identified through the Nexus Dialogues and Concept Notes or Project Documents to facilitate their financing.

A MENA Water-Energy-Food Nexus Programme

- A multi-stakeholder Nexus policy dialogue in the MENA First activities: annual Med conferences - TA for preparation of Nexus projects, including private sector engagement.

First activities: preparation of 2 regional projects.

- TA for Nexus institutional setting / policy making at national and transboundary level. First activity: North Western Sahara Aquifer System (Algeria, Libya, Tunisia)
