Research Interests:
Liminal aesthetics in Design objects – manifestations of un-categorized designed
artifacts. Artifacts that are created outside mainstream canons of design, that have
an ever growing influence on design discourse.
The souvenir as an analytical model that raises questions of authenticity (and
forgery), external inter-cultural influences. Being complex reflexive artifacts,
representing vernacular culture and creativity.
Painting as political and artistic postulation. Painting is my preferred medium for
self-artistic expression. Here my research is through studio work and exhibitions.
Current research activity:
The invention of a (chair) Tradition in Ethiopia: the Aksum Chair: research of
contemporary furniture workshops in Addis Ababa and Aksum that have created a
3
“new tradition” in Ethiopian chair design – the Aksum chair. A new design style that
is based on the stelae from the ancient Kingdom of Aksum. Including two research
visits to Ethiopia 2015.
Gum Arabic: A creative visual research (painting series) using one of paintings most
ancient compounds extracted from the Acacia Senegal that grows across the Sahel.
The gum historically was part of an African-European trade controlled by Arabs
(hence the name) used for various cooking, medicinal, cosmetic and artistic uses.
