OnTuesdayofthisweek,theWendellSeniorCentermovedtoitsnewfacilityjustacrossthestreetfromCityHall-380East1stStreet-andonDecember7ththeywillservetheirfirstmealinthenewbuilding. Thediningroom(whichseatsupto80people)will servemealsonMondaysat12p.m.throughthemonthofDecemberwithananticipatedserviceexpandiontoincludeTuesdaysandFridaysbeginninginJanuary,2016.Mealservicewillalsobeexpanded to In-Home deliveries in theWendellserviceareawhichcoincideswiththeWendellschooldistrict.Homeboundpersonswithintheserviceareamaycontactthecenterat536-9951forfurtherdetailsandqualifications. ThisnewbuildingwillallowtheWendellSeniorCentertoexpandingandupgrad-ingitsservicestotheWendellcommunity,includingoportunitiesforrecreationalac-tivitiessuchascardgames,pool,reading,orviewingTV.Normalhoursofoperationwillbefrom11a.m.to4p.m.ondayswhenmealsareserved.

The Center also plans to rent space togroupsforbusinessorcommunitymeetingsandotherspecialoccasions.Spacerentalmaybearrangedbycalling536-9951. In1976hewastheWesternStatesCoordinatorforSen.FrankChurch’spresidentialcampaign,andlaterservedastheWesternRegionalDirectorfortheCarter-Mondalecampaign. In1977heandhisfamilymovedtoBoisefollowinghisappointmenttothepostofIdahoDirectoroftheFarmersHomeAdministrationbytheSecretaryofAgriculture.

AtFarmersHomehedevelopedaninter-estincomputers,andin1981launchedthecomputerstartupAgriculturalManagementSystems.Whenhediscoveredthatfarmersandrancherswerenotyetreadytoembracethepersonalcomputer,hetaughthimselftocodeandcreatedaccountingsoftwarethatwasusedbyschoolsthroughoutIdahoandOregon.HemanagedhisSchoolAdminis-trativeSoftwarecompanyuntilhisretire-mentin2004.

Inadditiontopoliticsandcomputers,Joe’sinterestswerereading,storytelling,carpentry,genealogy,andtheNewYorkTimescrosswordpuzzle.Healsohadasoftspotforallanimals,exceptcattle. Hewasprecededindeathbyhisparents;hisson-in-law,JimFarrar;andhissistersMarjorieMcHanandAgnesMcFee. Joe Thorpe McCarter, 85, of Boise died peacefully,Wednesday,November25,2015atalocalcarecenter. HewasbornMay30,1930inGooding,ID,toWilliamandMattie(Thorpe)McCarterjoiningafamilyoffivedotingsisterswhoclaimedthathisfeetnevertouchedthegrounduntilhewasoldenoughwalk. JoewasraisedonthefamilycattleranchinCorral,Idaho.Hewasinthelastclassof8thgraderstograduatefromCorral’soneroomschoolhouse,andgraduatedfromCamasCountyHighSchool,whereheletteredinfootballandbasketball,in1948.HespentasemesterattheUniversityofIdahostudyingAgriculture,butmissedtheCamasPrairieandreturnedhometohelphisparents. In1953hewasdraftedintotheU.S.ArmyandstationedinWashingtonD.C.whereheservedasanM.P.andinanHonorGuardwhichperformedformilitaryfuneralsanddignitaryvisits.In1957hemetMercedesLolleyatabirthdaypartyattheCamasPrairiehomeofherauntanduncle,TeddyandLevardHanson,andtheyweremarriedsixmonthslaterinherhometownofPortland. WhenhisparentsretiredtoHagerman,heandMercedestookoverthefamilyranch.Inadditiontoranching,JoeservedasatrusteeofSchoolDistrict121andontheboardofPrairiePower,aruralelectriccooperative. Inthelate1960’shisinterestturnedtopolitics,andhebecameadelegatetothetumultuous1968DemocraticNationalConventioninChicago.Aftergainingexperi-encerunningsomelocalcampaigns,heservedasIdahoDemocraticChairmanfrom1970-1974.Healsoservedasco-chairofGov.Andrus’sre-electioncommitteein1974.

orcommoditiesathand,weoverlookthings.Weallknowmilkcomesfromcows.Somepeopleinlargecitieshavenocluewheremilkcomesfrom.Weactuallyseecows,milktrucks,andcanseetheendresultinthestore. LastWednesday,justbeforeThanksgiving,Iwasdeliveringsomepotatoesandonions.Afriendofminehadpurchasedseveral50#bagsfrommetogivetohisfriends.Hejusthap-penedtobeatoneofhisfriendswheresomepotatoesandonionsweretobedelivered.Aftercirclingtheblockthreetimestryingtofindtheaddressofthehousetuckedbetweenacoupleofothers.Iwasabletogettheproducetotherighthouse.Themailboxescoveredwithsnowdidn’thelpmycauseeither. Icarriedinthebagof50#potatoesfirst.Isatthemonthefloor.Secondly,Icarriedtheonionsintheguytoldmetoputthemonthetablethereinthegarage.Hestudiedthebagofonionsoverwithintent.HeaskedmeifIhadgrowntheon-ions.ItoldhimIhadnot,Imerelypurchasedthemtosell.HenoticedtheonionswerefromWeiser,Idaho.“AreyoufromWeiser?”theguyaskedme.“No,sir,”Ireplied.Hecontinuedwith,“Ihaveneverseenabagofonionsthisbigbefore!”Im-mediatelyIaskedhim,“So,youarenotfromaroundhereareyou?” HetoldmehewasfromConnecticutandpeoplewouldbringoveranoccasionalpie.HecontinuedtotellmethatsincehehasbeeninIdahohefoundthatpeopleinIdahobringthingsinbythebagandinbags. ToshareafewmomentswiththegentlemanaboutharvestwastrulyagoodThanksgivingfeeling.HopefullyeveryonehadagoodThanksgiving.ThisyearIhadmultipleinvitesforThanksgivingDay.Wheretogowasahardchoice.IactuallyendedupaguestthreetimesonThanksgiving.
