ExecutiveSummary
ThisreportfocusesonacriticaldemographicintheUnitedStates–Latinos.Currently17%oftheU.S.population(morethan58millionpeople)andthesecond-largestracial/ethnicgroupinthenation,Latinosareafast-growingdemographicprojectedtoreach24%ofthepopulationby2065,whilenon-Latinowhiteswilldecreasefrom62%ofthecurrentpopulationto46%in2065.Currently,nearlytwooutofthreeLatinoswerebornintheU.S.(65%),68%speakEnglishwell,while73%speakSpanishathome(e.g.,manyarebilingual).Politically,morethan27millionLatinosarecurrentlyeligibletovote,andLatinosarealreadyacriticalblockofvotersinlocal,state,andnationalelections,especiallyinswingstatessuchasColorado,Florida,andNevada(PewResearchCenter).InMay2017,weconductedanationallyrepresentativesurveyof2,054EnglishandSpanish-speakingLatinostoinvestigatetheircurrentclimatechangeknowledge,riskperceptions,policysupport,behaviors,motivations,andbarrierstopoliticalaction. KeyFindingsOverall,wefindaveryconsistentpattern:Latinosaremuchmoreengagedwiththeissueofglobalwarmingthanarenon-Latinos.Latinosaremoreconvincedglobalwarmingishappeningandhuman-caused,moreworriedaboutit,perceivegreaterrisks,aremoresupportiveofclimatechangepolicies,andaremorewillingtogetinvolvedpolitically.WithintheLatinocommunity,wefindanotherconsistentpattern:whileLatinos,generally,aremoreengagedwiththeissueofglobalwarmingthanarenon-Latinos,Spanish-languageLatinosareevenmoreengagedthanEnglish-languageLatinos. Beliefs&Attitudes• MorethaneightintenLatinos(84%)thinkglobalwarmingishappening,includingnearly
nineintenSpanish-languageLatinos(88%).• SixintenLatinos(63%)are“very”or“extremely”sureglobalwarmingishappening,including
sevenintenSpanish-languageLatinos(70%).• SevenintenLatinos(70%)understandglobalwarmingismostlyhumancaused,including
three-quartersofSpanish-languageLatinos(76%).Bycontrast,onlyabouttwointenLatinos(21%)thinkitiscausedmostlybynaturalchangesintheenvironment.
• ThreeinfourLatinos(78%)areworriedaboutglobalwarming;oneinthree(35%)are"veryworried",including43%ofSpanish-languageLatinos,whoare“veryworried”.
• HalfofLatinos(50%)thinkpeopleintheU.S.arebeingharmedbyglobalwarming“rightnow,”includingnearlytwointhreeSpanish-languageLatinos(63%).
• AmajorityofLatinosthinkglobalwarmingwillcause“agreatdeal”ofharmtoplantandanimalspecies(68%),futuregenerationsofpeople(64%),theworld’spoor(61%),peopleindevelopingcountries(55%),ortheirgrandchildren(54%).
• MorethanhalfofLatinos(53%)saytheyhavepersonallyexperiencedtheeffectsofglobalwarming.

• AbouthalfofLatinos(48%)discussglobalwarmingwithfamilyandfriends“often”or“occasionally,”including58%ofSpanish-languageLatinos.
• FewerthanhalfofLatinos(41%)hearaboutglobalwarminginthemediaatleastonceamonthormorefrequently.
• EightintenLatinos(83%),includingnineintenSpanish-languageLatinos(90%),saythatglobalwarmingisatleast“somewhat”importanttothem.
• AlargemajorityofLatinos(85%)supportschoolsteachingchildrenaboutglobalwarming,includingmorethanhalf(57%)who“stronglyagree”thatschoolsshouldteachchildrenaboutit.
• NearlyoneinfourLatinossayeitherprovidingabetterlifeforourchildrenandgrandchildrenorpreventingthedestructionofmostlifeontheplanetarethemostimportantreasonstoreduceglobalwarming(each23%).
Policy&Politics• ThreeinfourLatinoswantcorporationsandindustry(77%),citizensthemselves(74%),
PresidentTrump(74%),andtheU.S.Congress(73%)todomoretoaddressglobalwarming.
• AlargemajorityofLatinos(68%)thinktheU.S.shouldreduceitsgreenhousegasemissions“regardlessofwhatothercountriesdo.”
• EightintenLatinos(81%)supportrequiringfossilfuelcompaniestopayacarbontax.• HalfofLatinos“stronglysupport”fundingmoreresearchintorenewableenergy(55%),
regulatingcarbondioxideasapollutant(50%),orprovidingtaxrebatesforpeoplewhopurchaseenergy-efficientvehiclesorsolarpanels(48%).
• ManyLatinosarewillingtotakepoliticalactiononglobalwarming,includingamajoritywhowouldvoteforacandidateforpublicofficebecauseoftheirpositiononglobalwarming(60%).Amajorityarealsowillingtojoinacampaigntoconvinceelectedofficialstotakeactiontoreduceglobalwarming(51%),including61%ofSpanish-languageLatinos.
• SevenintenLatinos(71%)haveneverbeencontactedbyanorganizationworkingtoreduceglobalwarming.
• Latinosfacedifferentbarrierstocontactingelectedofficialsaboutglobalwarming,includingaboutthreeinfour(73%)whosaynobodyhaseveraskedthem,andmorethansixinten(64%)saytheydonotknowwhichelectedofficialstocontact.
Actions&Behaviors• OneinthreeLatinos(35%)haverewardedcompaniesfortakingstepstoreduceglobalwarming
bybuyingtheirproducts.Similarly,aboutoneinthreeLatinos(31%)havepunishedcompaniesthatopposestepstoreduceglobalwarmingbynotbuyingtheirproducts.
• AmajorityofLatinos(57%)intendtobuytheproductsofcompaniesthataretakingstepstoreduceglobalwarming.Likewise,amajorityofLatinos(55%)wouldpunishcompaniesforopposingstepstoreduceglobalwarmingbynotbuyingtheirproducts.

“Residentsofsomecoastalcitiesseetheirstreetsfloodmoreregularlyduringstormsandhightides.Inlandcitiesnearlargeriversalsoexperiencemoreflooding,especiallyintheMidwestandNortheast.Insuranceratesarerisinginsomevulnerablelocations,andinsuranceisnolongeravailableinothers.HotteranddrierweatherandearliersnowmeltmeanthatwildfiresintheWeststartearlierinthespring,lastlaterintothefall,andburnmoreacreage.InArcticAlaska,thesummerseaicethatonceprotectedthecoastshasreceded,andautumnstormsnowcausemoreerosion,threateningmanycommunitieswithrelocation.”
Inlinewiththisassessment,sixintenLatinos(62%)thinkglobalwarmingisaffectingweatherintheUnitedStateseither“alot”(38%)or“some”(24%).NearlyhalfofSpanish-languageLatinos(46%)thinkglobalwarmingisaffectingtheweather“alot,”comparedwithonly23%ofnon-Latinos.
