Why was the Civil Rights Movement Necessary?

• 13th amendment- “freed slaves”• Intention/assumption- blacks free=equal

citizens (failed)• 14th amendment- “blacks are citizens”• Intention/assumption- black= citizens=vote=

same rights and privileges as white counterparts (failed)

• 15th- “can’t deny anyone the right to vote based on race, previous servitude, religion,…”

• Intention/assumption-black males can vote (failed)

• Dual Society- 2 separate societies: white society and black society- co-exist

• Why? 1. legislation: Plessy vs. Ferguson• 2. tradition: action done automatically usu.
