Welcome to our second
new-look newsletter!
Goodness, hasn’t the year
flown? As I type what I am
thinking I am reminded of
how truly difficult commu-
nication is for people who
have not grown up in New
Zealand. Of course the
year has not literally flown
but it certainly seems to
have gone by quickly. I
have been part of this
wonderful team now for
four months and continue
to be inspired and amazed
by our incredibly diverse,
talented and capable mi-
grant and refugee commu-
nity.
A common theme that I
have noticed as I chat with
our new learners about
their needs and aspira-
tions, is a lack of confi-
dence. I say “Be fear-
less!”, or "Kia kaha, kia
maia, kia manawanui" –

On Tuesday the 19th August
Liz, Bridget, Betsy, Dick,
Glenda and myself traveled
to Hamilton to spend several
hours with the English Lan-
guage Partners Waikato
team. It was a great chance
to share ideas and
knowledge and we all came
away buzzing with enthusi-
asm. Thank you so much to
the manager Jo de Lisle and
her team for hosting us and
making us feel so welcome.
A huge thanks must also go
to Janne and Laurel who
stayed back and held the fort
here as we went off in search
of development opportuni-
ties.
Jo and Diana Hummel, ELP
Waikato Coordinator, have
support from Trust Waikato
funding for a rural project.
This has allowed them to
offer services in small rural
towns in the Waikato region.
This is something that we
would also like to offer in the
wider Rotorua area. We have
plans to start a course on
farm just out of Tirau to cater
to the needs of a Filipino
community there.
We welcome Bridget Skinner
to the team. Bridget is very
knowledgeable in all things
rural and qualified to teach
English as a second lan-
guage. Welcome, Bridget -
we look forward to working
with you to meet the needs of
our migrants working on our
farms and service industries.
be held in the Eric Bridge-
man room, here at the Arts
Village. The focus of this
workshop will be
‘Refreshment’. I have had a
number of tutors asking for
this and more information will
be posted to you directly. I
encourage you to attend if
you are able as I am sure
you will take something away
to share with your learners.
Training dates have been set
for our new volunteer home
If you fall into this category,
there are a few interesting
things coming up.
On Wednesday the 24th
September from 1.00-3.00pm
there will be a workshop for
all current home tutors. It will
tutors who have registered
their interest with us. This will
be held over the first and
second weekends in October
from 9.30am-3.30pm. Infor-
mation packs have been sent
out.
This is an NZQA approved
programme. If you know of
anyone who may be interest-
ed in becoming a home tutor,
or you have any questions
please give Anna a call to
discuss.
Existing and New Volunteer Home Tutors
acknowledge our commit-
ment to learning and teach-
ing.
We decided that a “pot-luck”
morning tea was the best
way to celebrate. This means
that we will all bring a small
plate of food to share, and
put it out on the table for eve-
ryone to enjoy. (Wikipedia
has an interesting definition
of the origins of this term.)
Please come and celebrate.

On the last Friday of every
month, English Language
Partners Rotorua host a
lunch time event that gives
everyone a chance to learn
more about migrants in our
community.
This event was started by
Heather from Settlement
Support, and it was such a
well attended and fabulous
initiative we have decided to
continue with it. Settlement
Support has undergone ma-
jor restructuring and are no
longer in a position to offer
this.
Waitsu Wu, English Lan-
guage Partners committee
member, has kindly offered
to volunteer her services and
help facilitate this event.
On Friday 29 August, Priya
Jayathilaka spoke to around
thirty people about life in Sri
Lanka and the transition her
and her family experienced
as a result of migrating to
Aotearoa, New Zealand.
We learnt that Sri Lanka has
a population of 20,277,597!
The official languages are
Sinhala and Tamil and that
the literacy rate is 97.3%.
Wow! Impressive statistics!
Priya also told us that there
are over twenty five varieties
of bananas grown in Sri
Lanka and their main export
item is tea.
The government in Sri
Lanka provides free educa-
tion for students at school
and university although at
university level, students
pay exam fees.
Thank you Priya. All who
attended thoroughly enjoyed
listening to you.
If you are interested in being
a speaker please contact
Anna or Waitsu.
our clocks forward one hour
before we go to sleep on
Saturday 27 September so
we are on time for our Sun-
day activities! The thought
process behind this is that it
will allow us more daylight
hours at the end of the day to
enjoy summer activities.
Daylight savings started a
century ago and has both
supporters and critics.
In 2007 the Minister of Inter-
Daylight savings will begin
again on Sunday 28 Septem-
ber 2014.
This is the time that we put
nal Affairs Hon. Rick Barker
announced on 30 April 2007
that the period of daylight
saving would be extended
from the last Sunday in Sep-
tember until the first Sunday
in April.
There is lots of information
about the history of daylight
savings on the internet. I
visited the department of
Internal Affairs website to
learn about this.
Clocks go forward one hour on 28 September
The course will run from 16 Sep-
tember to 9 December 2014; 6-
9pm Tuesdays at Community
House, 1115 Haupapa Street,
Rotorua.
Dr Margriet Theron will teach the
course. Margariet has a Certifi-
cate in English Language Teach-
ing to Adults and degrees in
management, marketing, science
and communication. She is a
Trustee of Speech NZ, and has
taught this course since 2011.
Dr Theron is Vice- President of
the Rotorua Multicultural Council,
Deputy Chair of the Geyser
Community Foundation, Past
President of the Rotorua Cham-
ber of Commerce, and a quali-
fied interpreter.
An information session about this
course is to be held at 6.00pm
on Tuesday, 16 September 2014
at Community House, 1115
Haupapa Street.
If you would like to know more

ciation. Learners pay their own

More volunteer home tutors needed
Tutors—if you are thinking of taking on another learner but haven’t yet taken that step…….please take it in the
direction of my office! I have a number of learners waiting to be matched. We are running a new home tutor train-
ing programme in October, however we do have learners out there who need help now. Give me a call or come
and see me if you feel you are in a position to help.
