Pretend that it didn't or wont happen at work Look a little harder those burn are real this is
real person with a real family and this is theresult of a real fire
Why do we practice drills so we don't have tocome to work with scares that don't healbecause we choose to ignore safety.

Exits & Fire Doors
In a fire, they are your only means of
escape
Exits and corridors should be kept clear ofequipment and furniture
Fire doors close automatically in a fire and
are intended to contain fire and smoke Never prop or block fire doors from closing

Fire Alarm System
The alarm is activated if it senses smoke, water flow insprinkler pipes, or if a manual pull alarm is activated
Manual pull alarms are located throughout the facility
and are red in color
Alarms will continue to sound on the fire floor, and thefloors above and below the fire, until silenced by
security
Flashing visual alarms are provided for the hearing
impaired
Security monitors fire alarms 24 hours a day, 365 days a
year
Sprinklers are only activated by heat. Each sprinkler is
discharged independently.

Controlling a Fire
Pull the nearest fire alarm and call security, or your
designated emergency contact (i.e., security)
Control a fire with a fire extinguisher until the fire
department arrives
Do not endanger your own safety!
Do not run with burning articles!
Evacuate patients in danger and reassure patients and
visitors that we are responding
Close all doors in the area of the fire
Move combustible items away from the fire

Controlling a Fire
When confronted with a fire, use the
acronym RACE to remember the correct
procedures to follow: Rescue those in immediate danger
Alarm others in the area by activating the
nearest fire alarm
Confine the fire and Call security or your
designated emergency contact
Extinguish the fire if small, or Evacuate

Fire Extinguishers
In controlling a fire with an extinguisher
Ensure that back-up extinguishers are available
Do not attempt to put out an overhead fire
Extinguishers are located so you will not have to
travel more than 75 feet, in any direction, to findone
Access to fire extinguishers should remainunobstructed
Do not re-hang partially discharged extinguishers Missing or discharged extinguishers should
immediately be reported to the departmentresponsible for replacing the extinguishers

Fire Extinguishers
Follow the acronym PASS to use a fire
extinguisher:
Pull the pin
Aim low, at the base of the fire
Squeeze the handle. Stand about
ten feet from the fire. Sweep the hose from side to side

Evacuation
Evacuation will be ordered if: The fire cannot be controlled, or patients, visitors and
employees are in immediate danger
Two types of evacuation:
Lateral - Evacuation through smoke/fire barrier doors to asafe area on the same floor
Vertical - Evacuation of all occupants on a floor to anothersafe floor

Evacuate beyond smoke/fire barrier doors
Do not utilize elevators in areas directly threatened byfire
When traveling through smoke and/or fire, rememberto keep low, wrap patients in wet blankets and keep
faces covered Do not run!
Do not open a door into an area where a suspected firemight be. To check doors: Brace your shoulder and foot against the door and slowly open
it
If smoke seeps through, close the door
If there is no heat or smoke, proceed to evacuate
Close all doors as you pass
Do not allow anyone to return to the area

Fire Safety Planning
A Fire Safety Plan is designed by thebuilding owner in co-operation with theFire Department to identify the actions that
should be taken by the occupants andbuilding management in the event of a fireor similar emergency situation.
In addition, items are identified that must
be implemented and documented, whererequired in order to maintain fireprotection systems and assist in theprevention of a fire on the premise.

systems and facilities.
Occupant Safety:
To establish a systematic method for safe and orderly evacuation of the
building in the case of fire or other emergency.
Fire Control:
To establish procedures that will maximize the probability of controlling

The Alberta Fire Code also contains specific requirements for the keeping of
records of routine maintenance. Log books must be kept and may be created by
the owner in a format useful to the owner. Special log books are not required,
but are available for this purpose, please consult the yellow pages for Fire
Protection Suppliers.
The Alberta Fire Code requires that records of all tests and corrective measures be
retained for a period of two years after they are made.
During routine inspections the Fire High Rise Officer(s) may request records to
ensure that the necessary checks, inspections and/or tests are being done andrecords are in order.

Fire Alarm Systems
The purpose of a fire alarm system is to alert all the occupants of thebuilding that an emergency of fire exists, so that such occupants may putinto practice the measures required by the Fire Safety Plan.
All fire alarm systems shall be maintained in full operation conditions at alltimes.
There are two main types of fire alarm systems namely, single stage
systems and two stage systems. A single stage system sounds a general alarm throughout the facility that may require
total evacuation of the building. Operation of the fire alarm is activated by a manualpull station, heat detector, smoke detector or a sprinkler head.
A two stage fire alarm system is designed to allow staff to investigate and takeappropriate action and may require evacuation of the fire affected area(s). The generalalarm or second signal is reserved as a clear indication for complete evacuation of thebuilding where this proves necessary.

Exits
An exit is that part of a means of egress that leads from the floor area itserves to a public thoroughfare or to an approved open space. Walls, floors, doors or other means provide a protected path necessary for
occupants to proceed with reasonable safety to a place of refuge.
Vertical shafts accessed from above or below grade are protected from theremainder of the building provided the doors leading to the shaft are keptclosed.

Fire Department Access
Fire Department access allows fire fighters and their equipment to gain accessto the building. Vehicles parked in a fire route, excessive vegetation, snow andother forms of obstructions to access routes, fire hydrants and Fire Department
connections are not permitted by the Alberta Fire Code.
Maintaining Fire Department access is an ongoing matter. In addition, accessinto a building requires consideration (i.e. with a key box, through preplanningetc.).
Portable Fire ExtinguishersPortable fire extinguishers are intended as a first aidmeasure to cope with fires of limited size. The basictypes of fire extinguishers are Class A, B and C.
Portable fire extinguishers are rated for the
corresponding classes of fire.P bar Y Safety Consultants Alberta Canada

Standpipe and Hose Systems
A standpipe system is an arrangement of piping, valves and hose outletsinstalled in a building or structure in such a manner that water can bedischarged through a hose and nozzle for the extinguishment of a fire. The
system is connected to a water supply that permits an adequate supply ofwater to the hose outlets.
Automatic Sprinkler Systems
An automatic sprinkler system is a series of underground and overhead
piping designed in accordance with fire protection engineering standards. The system is connected to a water supply such as a storage tank ormunicipal water supply. The system includes a controlling valve, a series ofsprinkler heads and a device for actuating an alarm when the system is inoperation. The system is usually activated by heat from a fire anddischarges water over the fire area.

Water Supply
The total water supplies required for fire fighting purposes may be suppliedfrom various sources such as a municipal water supply, storage tanks(elevated or underground), lakes, rivers, wells, swimming pools or a
combination of sources; and should be obtained within practical distances.Water supplies must be accessible to fire fighting equipment.
Fire Pumps
Fire pumps are used to ensure that the water required for fire fighting and
automatic sprinkler and standpipe and hose systems is available.
Emergency Power
Emergency power is required to ensure the continued operation of fire andlife safety equipment and systems in case of loss of normal hydro-electricpower.
