There are some exciting things happening in our veteranspantry! ~~ Gil Claunch and Keith Edwards

We have always done an outstanding job of providing food assistance to our MacombCounty veterans in need. That will continue, of course, and we are striving to makeit even better.

In an effort to share the load, Keith Edwards has been appointed and accepted theresponsibility to co-chair the pantry operation with longtime chair Gil Claunch. This will allowGil to continue his leadership of the pantry and be able to take some well deserved time offto travel and enjoy more time with Phyllis and the rest of his family.

One of the immediate changes will be regular meetings with the pantry volunteer team. Communication is the key to success in every organization. There was an initial meeting on April 23. Anyone and everyone interested in helping in the pantry are welcome. We willbegin regularly scheduled meetings on the second Friday of each month at 11 a.m. Here wewill briefly discuss the previous month's results, what is coming up in the coming month, andseek input for improvements in the operation of the pantry. Meetings will last no longerthan one hour, and all interested are welcome to attend.

We are looking forward to continuing to support the needs of our Macomb County veterans!

Saturday, May 11, the chapter willonce again participate in the LetterCarriers’ Food Drive. The event willtake place at the post office on 22

Mile Road and Van Dyke. Please stopby if you can help. More info and

times will follow closer to the date.Check your email!

VETERANS BRIEFS By John P. Smeekens, Veterans Director

WOMEN IN THE MILITARY As of March, according to the Department ofDefense, women make up 20 percent of theAir Force, 19 percent of the Navy, 15 percentof the Army and almost 9 percent of theMarine Corps, with about 16 percent in theCoast Guard. TV star Bea Arthur was a truckdriver in the Marine Corps during World WarII. Queen Elizabeth II is the only sitting head ofstate to have served in World War II, as amechanic/driver in the Women's AuxiliaryTerritorial Service when she was still aprincess. Navy Capt. Rosemary Mariner wasone of the first eight women selected to flymilitary aircraft in 1973, and a year laterbecame the Navy's first female jet pilot. At hergraveside service in February, nine femalepilots from Naval Air Station Oceana inVirginia performed the "missing woman"formation for their predecessor – the firstall-female crew to do so. VA BUDGET GREAT START The president's federal spending plan forfiscal year 2020 will attempt to increase theVA's overall budget by 9.6 percent to $220.2billion, which would enable the VA to startimplementation of the MISSION Act,strengthen mental health access andtreatment programs, increase women's healthservices, boost electronic health recordinteroperability with DOD, and support a lot ofother veterans organizations’ ideas. DEFENSE BUDGET INCREASE??? The president's $750 billion budget requestfor total defense spending includes a 4.9percent increase for the Defense Department,or $718 billion, which will enable thedepartment to continue its three-prongedstrategy to compete, deter and win across allspectrums of warfare. Specifically, thePentagon proposal includes:

#1- a 3.1 percent military pay raise, the largestin a decade. #2- a 3.2 percent basic allowancefor housing increase and a 2.4 percent basicallowance for subsistence increase. #3-growing the active and reserve force byalmost 40,000 over the next five years. #4- a10 percent increase for the Defense POW/MIAAccounting Agency, from the current year$130.6 million to $144.88 million. #5-makingone of the largest research and developmentrequest in 70 years. And #6- Also, having DODplans to allocate $8 billion to support militaryfamilies with childcare, youth programs, school education, and commissary operations.

VETERANS PRO BONO LEGAL IN 41-B Veterans and active duty personnel maynow be able to receive free legal aid becauseof a new 41-B District Court program. Thecourt, which has Selfridge Air National GuardBase within its jurisdiction, and is on Stark'sDrive, just off of Groesbeck, might be able tohelp you. The court has recently announced itsHelp a Hero Program which provides pro bonolegal services to active duty and veterans. Allyou need to do is supply information as toyour status as a veteran or active duty andthey might be able to help you withmisdemeanor charges. The court is presentlyworking on a list of attorneys who will bewilling to take on these cases. One thing that has been realized is thatmany veterans don't identify that they areveterans or active military. This fact makes ithard for court personnel to inform them ofprograms that are available to assist thesemen and women who are serving, or whohave served this country. If you know of anattorney who would like to volunteer for thisprogram, or if you have some questionsyourself, give the court a call at 586-469-9300. NEW NAVY DESTROYER A U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer will benamed after a Medal of Honor recipient fromMichigan. Hospital corpsman Master ChiefWilliam Charette, a native of Ludington, joinedthe Navy in 1951 and served in the KoreanWar. He received the honor after shielding afellow Marine from a grenade in North Korea. He died in 2012. The destroyer will beequipped with offensive and defensiveweapons systems that will support maritimeand air warfare efforts. NEW ORDERS FOR BLUE WATER VA was recently ordered to lift its hold onBlue Water Navy appeals as a result of therecent Procopio v. Wilkie court decision. TheProcopio decision clarified that Blue WaterNavy Vietnam War veterans are eligible toreceive presumptive disability compensationbenefits for health conditions associated withexposure to Agent Orange. After the decisionwas issued on January 29, VA requested astay, which places a hold on Blue Water Navyclaims and appeals while the agencydeliberated whether to appeal the decision.VA's request to stay Blue Water Navy claimswas denied and VA is now forced to starttaking action on appeals. This means veteransaffected by the Procopio decision may seeactivity on their appeals in the near future. All

veterans, who are Blue Water Navy veterans, who receive notice of action on their claims, should contact an accredited Veterans ServiceOfficer through their county Veterans ServiceOffice, or one of the veterans organizations. The Department of Justice still has until April29 to formally appeal. Moreover, theProcopio decision still leaves certain questionsunanswered for Blue Water Navy veterans andothers exposed to Agent Orange. This is whymany veterans organizations continue to urgethe swift passage of H.R. 299, the Blue WaterNavy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2019. Urge yourmembers of Congress to cosponsor andsupport passage of H.R. 299. FREEDOM MEMORIAL The ground was broken on April 13, 2008.The memorial was completed and dedicatedon July 13, 2008. The memorial is located inthe Sunset View Cemetery in Jonesville,Michigan. The memorial is dedicated to allpast, present and future veterans. Thememorial has granite stones of all servicebranches. It has a lighted walkway to thememorial. Each flag and stone is lighted aswell. PFAS NEEDS SUPPORT Veterans with health problems caused byexposure to toxic chemicals known as PFASwould be eligible for federal health careservices under legislation proposed inCongress. The bill introduced Thursday would requirethe U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs tocover treatment for ailments related to PFAS,or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. The chemicals are used widely as a water, stain and grease repellent. They're also a keyingredient in firefighting foams used fortraining exercises on military bases. Expertssay they are linked to cancers and numerousother illnesses. Among lawmakers sponsoringthe bill are Sens. Debbie Stabenow and GaryPeters and Rep. Dan Kildee of Michigan. Theysay many veterans have been exposed to thechemicals, along with people living near baseswho may have drunk contaminated water.

Swap Meet Opportunity Helps Sell Motorcycle Raffle Tickets

# Submitted by Tom Puruleski

Ron Squires, Dave Schoenherr, Mike Schneider, and Tom Puruleski headed up I-75 tothe Birch Run Motorcycle Swap Meet on Sunday morning, April 14. Our host at theevent, Spartan Cycle manager Gary Latessa, provided an additional space next to his

booth for us to display the bike and setup shop to sell tickets. It was a pretty good sizecrowd that filed past as we hawked our tickets. A lot of people took a chance on winningthe bike. Most were veterans themselves and some participated just to help the veterans. One young woman said her father was a Vietnam veteran and bought a ticket. She agreedto pose for a photo and show her patriotic tattoo. It was a pretty decent day as we sold 67tickets. We still have a way to go to turn a profit for the chapter, and plan on selling atsome local bike nights when the weather warms up. Chapter members are encouraged tohelp out buying or selling tickets. Even if you don’t ride, winning that bike and turning itover for a quick profit will make your day!
