2013 Car Show News# submitted by Donn Sinclair ~ Car Show chairman
The chapter car show will be at Gibraltar Trade Center Mount Clemens on Saturday,
August 24. The good news is we won’t be up against the carnival this year. The bad
news is, for the next six months, I’ll be working you over for raffle table donations,
trophy/award sponsors. The more trophies sponsored, the less we pay in show
costs, more money for the chapter (the object of the exercise), and, of course, getting your
car/truck ready to show. Entry and sponsor forms are available at the Vet Center or from
me. I’ve always got some in the truck. Questions? Call. 586-243-0222.
Chapter Spreads AwarenessAcross the State
Chapter member Noel Holley contacted us
recently and said the POW/MIA flag
flying over the Kalkaska County Sports
and Recreation Center in Kalkaska was in sad
repair, and repeated requests to replace it fell
on deaf ears. Noel contacted 154 and asked if
we would donate a new flag, which he would
present in the name of our chapter. As you can
see, our new flag now proudly flies over the
facility.

For many years,
these ladies have
been donating
quilts to our chapter,
along with other
groups that have
people in needing.
Note that they require
materials to continue
their good work.
Please be aware of
their volunteer group,
and their need for
ongoing support.
President’s Message
Round one of nominations for your 2013 officers took place at the last general membership
meeting. I am encouraged that quite a few members put their names in for consideration,
particularly for the board openings. I certainly would like to see more candidates for the
executive board positions. Consider stepping up to the plate and being part of setting the course
of your chapter over the next year. Round two will be coming up at the next membership
meeting on March 13 and your candidacy would make the election process more exciting.
I hope that most of you saw the article in the Detroit Free Press a couple of weeks ago, focused
on our chapter and the good things we are doing. I’m not sure what brought them to us. They
showed up unannounced, and did a commendable job of highlighting our chapter. I guess it goes
back to the good work that everyone has done over the years to put this chapter in a position of prominence.
Our memorial will be hitting the road again in late March, and I expect it to be a full season. We’re attempting to identify
some new venues for this year to continue taking our message to the folks of Michigan.
The first meeting for the Ride for Freedom was held February 8. As mentioned elsewhere in this newsletter, the event
may be a little different this year. Instead of starting and ending at Wolverine Harley, we may end up at Freedom Hill, as the
park is reopening this summer. This translates into the fact that we need more volunteers than ever, as we will have two
locations to cover. Everyone should consider coming out to help with set up and running the event since this is a major
source of revenue to the chapter each year. More details will follow.
I am involved with American House, looking into doing some different things this year for our Memorial Day and
Veteran’s Day celebrations. The color guard is excited about including some events for veterans while they’re still
breathing. We got involved with a couple of things last year that we found very rewarding, both for ourselves and the veteran
community. We’re looking to expand that this year, and I’m sure it will be a lot of fun for everyone. There is certainly lots of
fun stuff to do in the upcoming year, so come along on the journey and share in the rewards.

VA, SSA and IRS Cut Red Tape for Veterans and Survivors
New Policy Eliminates Paperwork, Allows More VA Staff to Focus on Eliminating Claims Backlog
December 20, 2012 WASHINGTON - The Department of
Veterans Affairs announced today it is cutting red tape for
Veterans by eliminating the need for them to complete an
annual Eligibility Verification Report (EVR). VA will
implement a new process for confirming eligibility for
benefits, and staff that had been responsible for processing
the old form will instead focus on eliminating the
compensation claims backlog.
Historically, beneficiaries have been required to complete
an EVR each year to ensure their pension benefits
continued. Under the new initiative, VA will work with the
Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Social Security
Administration (SSA) to verify continued eligibility for
pension benefits.
"By working together, we have cut red tape for Veterans
and will help ensure these brave men and women get the
benefits they have earned and deserve," said Secretary of
Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki.
VA estimates it would have sent nearly 150,000 EVRs to
beneficiaries in January 2013. Eliminating these annual
reports reduces the burden on Veterans, their families, and
survivors because they will not have to return these
routine reports to VA each year in order to avoid
suspension of benefits. It also allows VA to redirect more
than 100 employees that usually process EVRs to work on
eliminating the claims backlog.
"Having already instituted an expedited process that
enables wounded warriors to quickly access Social Security
disability benefits, we are proud to work with our federal
partners on an automated process that will make it much
easier for qualified Veterans to maintain their VA benefits
from year to year," said Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of
Social Security.
"The IRS is taking new steps to provide critical data to
help speed the benefits process for the nation's Veterans
and Veterans Affairs," said Beth Tucker, IRS Deputy
Commissioner for Operations Support. "The IRS is pleased
to be part of a partnership with VA and SSA that will
provide needed data quickly and effectively to move this
effort forward."
All beneficiaries currently receiving VA pension benefits
will receive a letter from VA explaining these changes and
providing instructions on how to continue to submit their
unreimbursed medical expenses.
More information about VA pension benefits is available
at http://www.benefits.va.gov/pension and other VA
benefit programs on the joint Department of Defense-VA
web portal eBenefits at www.ebenefits.va.gov

A JUNGLE NIGHT“New Guinea – 1944
Staff Sgt. Fred Domaradzki ~ Anti Tank Co. 32nd Red Arrow Division
Just sitting here in the jungle night
And waiting for the Japs to come and fight.
You just keep looking into dark space,
But you can’t see further than your face.
The jungle is full of different sounds,
Which carry far through the night.
Then you wonder what may be around,
And pray to God for a little light.
You sit and listen to all these sounds,
And cock your rifle to fire a few rounds.
Have no fear in this jungle night,
You’re not alone through the night.
Your friends are there to help you out,
Wherever you may be about.
When spirits succumbs and danger is near,
Courage alone will chase away the fear.
