Awards Night at Chapter Meeting

At the March general membership meeting, a number of awards were presented. There were three Members of the Year plaques presented: Mike Brink, Gil Claunchand Brian Bobek. There is typically only one award presented per year but, as Gary

Stephens so eloquently stated, “you guys aren’t getting any younger so we thought we’dbetter accelerate things around here.” Thanks Gary! As I always like to say, we’re only oldonce!

A special award was presented by 1st Vice President Gary Purcell to Chris Scalise,honoring all the hours that Chris devotes to the betterment of Chapter 154. He regularlydonates the use of his 2 ½ ton truck to our various parade schedules, works to coordinatethe Selfridge Air Show, and devotes many hours collecting toys and donations at Walmarteach year for Operation Christmas. Volunteers like Chris are what exemplifies whatChapter 154 is all about.

President’s Message

Ah, spring is in the air. Luckily, we never really had a winter, and that’s fine with me. Springbrings with it a sense of freshness, time to air out our chapter closets and take a fresh start atanother year. We will soon have some newly elected officers and board members to continue

the good work of this chapter. I know there are a lot of new ideas bouncing around in the chapter,and I look forward to seeing these new ideas come to fruition. The summer season is underway forthe Traveling Memorial, and we plan to visit some new venues with it this year. That’s what it’s allabout – getting the memorial out to folks who may not have had an opportunity to see if before. Wehave a lot of friends out there that continue to help us, making sure we’re the organization thatdefines what veteran service is all about. The new chairs are in at the Vet Center, and we will soon have new conference room tables to go along with them. Thisprovides a fresh look for the center, without one cent of cost to the chapter, thanks to our members and some generous donors. There will most likely be some facility moves going on soon, which will consolidate our operations and hopefully make us moreefficient. Spring cleaning always involves throwing out some of the “old,” whether it’s ideas, taboos, attitudes and, of course,“stuff” that seems to continue to collect around the Vet Center. We need to clean up our facility and make it a place that peoplewant to show off. We won’t throw out the baby with the bathwater either… the tried and true, proven activities that have made us successfulwill continue. But we need to continually find new opportunities to excite our membership, showcase our chapter and promoterevenue‐generating events. I continue to hear that Freedom Hill might be reopened for ethnic festivals, and hopefully we canspringboard off of that if it’s true. We need to get our park operational again. I know you’ve heard it before from my predecessors, but I have to reiterate how important all the volunteers are that work sohard for this chapter. I received an award as one of the “Members of the Year,” but it’s not my personal efforts that warrant theaward. I marvel at how well the volunteers know what to do, how to do it, and DO it without needing to be supervised. Iappreciate your efforts and thank all of you for making this chapter what it is.

• Pat Jacobi, wife of Mike Jacobi, is now in a care facility for herongoing health problems. This requires Mike to travel daily to WestBloomfield to visit with her.

• Gloria Krzeminski wife of Roger (Popeye) Krzeminski is back inhome and she is doing better. Roger now has help, an aide comes totheir home in the morning to relieve Roger for a few hours thisallows him to get out and get things done. Roger tells us that keepinghis wife drinking enough to balance fluid levels is a never‐endingand delicate task to say the least.

• Frank Griffin has been hospitalized again as he had troublebreathing. Initially he was on intubation and this was removed.Unfortunately, he is now back on breathing assistance and dialysis.

• Bill Machus was deep in depression and in need of much prayer. Hehas climbed out of the miry pit of depression and is doing muchbetter because of the prayers and concern of his brothers in thecolor guard.

• 1st Vice President Gary Purcell is encountering some health issuesthat no one can seem to get to the bottom of. Gary is continuing withtests to determine what the problem is.

• Color guard commander Mike Brink is having issues with recurringheadaches and is undergoing testing to see if they can narrow downthe problem.

• Color guard member, Jerry Fleetwood, is home recovering from atriple bypass surgery. Jerry was admitted with chest pains, and70‐80% blockages were found in two of the arteries to the heart.

• Garand “Gary” Moore, a chartermember of the chapter, passed away.Gary was an original member of the“Nighthawks” honor guard from theShafer Rachelle VFW prior to theformation of the Chapter 154 colorguard.

• George Sawyer lost his brotherrecently. Unfortunately, word did notget back to the chapter until the lastchapter meeting.

VVA 154 Associates Thank Veterans

At the March chapter meeting, the Associates presented all in attendance withcake, cookies and coffee. This was their "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans"ceremony as they knew that we would have many other commitments coming

up on the official March date. The cake was "killer" as usual, and was provided byResurrection Cemetery. All the cookies were homemade by the members of theAssociates, and everyone was sent home with a carry out bag of goodies.

A sincere thank you goes out to the Associates for making sure our waistlines don'trecede!

VETERAN SERVICES SEEK SUPPORTMacomb millage renewal needed to keep up with demandby Charles Ramierez/ The Detroit News/ March 10, 2012

Five years ago, it wasn't unusual for military veterans to wait up to 13 weeks to get help from Macomb County to apply forbenefits. "Thirteen weeks is unacceptable," said Kermit Harris, director of Macomb County's Veterans Services Department.The agency helps military veterans who live in the county find, apply for and receive benefits. The wait has been cut down toabout a week since voters approved a property tax for veterans' services in 2008. County officials hope residents will renewthe millage in the Aug. 7 primary election.

Voters will be asked to approve the Macomb County Veterans' Millage for five more years. The current millage is set to expirelater this year. Renewing the 0.04‐mill tax would cost the average homeowner about $4 a year. It will also generate about $1million for the county's Veterans Services Department. If the tax is defeated, the department will have to make drastic cuts andlobby to get funding from the county's general fund, Harris said. The millage is the department's primary source of funding, hesaid.

The department helps veterans in Macomb County with benefits such as health care, compensation for service‐related deaths,burial allowances, medal requests and financial assistance with educational programs for veterans' spouses and children. Lastyear, it helped nearly 6,500 veterans get benefits. That compares with 4,727 in 2007, Harris said. Since the millage passed, thecounty veterans' department was able to expand from three service counselors to six. The additional manpower has allowedthe agency to cut down the wait for veterans to get help, Harris said. It has also enabled the agency to conduct outreachprograms and have its counselors visit veterans groups, senior citizen centers and nursing homes across the county.

Introduction of special guest Dean Smith, Marine veteran and

member of Always Brothers, which raises funds to help pay for college of dependents of children of fallen Marines. They willrun 100 miles from Cincinnati to Columbus on May 26 and 27. Motion by Ron D seconded by Mitch M to donate $250 to AlwaysBrothers, motion passed, Point Team matched the donation. Many thanks from Dean for our generous donation. Introductionof officers. Motion by Larry G seconded by Mitch M to accept minutes as published in the Boo Coo News. Treasurer’s report byMike Jacobi…we made a little money from the past month and all accounts are flush. Motion by Fred W seconded by Gary S toaccept report. Veteran of the Year awards presented to Mike Brink, Gil Claunch and Brian Bobek for their hard work and yearsof service to the chapter. Thank you guys, the honor was well deserved.

! Food Bank: Gil would like to thank all who help and the 2 newvolunteers. 2 WWII veterans used the food bank recently and it showshow tough times have become.! Monthly Raffle: Ron presented a check for $5,000 to the chapter, andasked that the tickets be turned in a little earlier next time. He thankedall for helping and we than him and Jim for their hard work.! Agent Orange: George stated that it is hard to get any new infopertaining to Agent Orange. All the same old stuff as everything seemsto be tied up in committees. Air Force and blue water Navy tied up aswell as 2010 proposals. Your benefits are cut if you show improvementin your health.

! Traveling Memorial: We have scheduled 23 sites so far for this yearand we will need help as usual at each event so please come out whenyou can. New totes have been purchased and the trailer is beingreorganized and prettied up for when we travel.! Associates: Welcome Home is March 30 and the associates celebratedearly for us with cookies and cakes and more cookies and coffee andmore cookies. Thank you associates for all you do for us, we doappreciate it. They are looking for donations and help for the Ride forFreedom in May. Please help and give if you are able as this is a greatfundraiser and a fun event.! Car Shows: June 10 at Gibraltar Trade Center is our first one andregistration and trophy forms are available at the Vet Center. Motion byGary S, seconded by Ron D, to donate $250 for purchase of trophies.Motion passed.

!Ride for Freedom: Sopranos will cater again. Need volunteers forsecurity, registration, breakfast and other venues. New design for shirtsthis year.!Merchandise: Mr Merchandise reports that we are ready for theseason.

Old Business:We received an answer from the landlordconcerning rent and we are still negotiating. Newchairs are in the Vet Center and the names and logowill be added to the sleeves. No new info on the501(C)(3) status from the CPA, paperwork is filedand moving forward. Veterans organizations havedonated $975 to date for the lawn signs to renewmillage if and when it is put on the ballot. The $500donation to Keith Famie for his film will bereturned, as his project will not be going forward.Motion by Mitch A, seconded by George S, to donate$250 to the Fallen Heroes of Macomb CountyMemorial from these latest wars. Motion passed.

New Business:There are 8 M‐16 weapons which the chapter hasin their possession, but are not currently used bythe Color Guard. Commander Mike Brink wouldlike to sell these weapons when he can determinetheir value. We will find out at a later date if this isfeasible. Fundraiser at Cheeseburger in Paradise onMarch 20, report to follow later. Wall andmerchandise at Bruce Post on March 30, for theirWelcome Home to Vietnam Veterans. Giles Richterdonated book from Joann Puffer Kotcher who was aDonut Dolly in Vietnam. It’s available to anyonewho wants to read it. Mayor Fouts of Warren sent aletter asking us to nominate a Warren resident asan Outstanding Volunteer for their celebration onMay 25. A plaque was presented to Chris Scalise fordonating the use of his deuce and a half for variousfunctions, including Operation Christmas, parades,Final Ride and other events. If you wish to have aFinal Ride, make your wishes known to your familyso this can happen for you. Gary P said that weshould look into other fundraisers to keep thedoors open. A gas card raffle is one way to raisemoney and we will entertain other suggestions. Healso thanked the color guard for their service forGary Moore who was a member of the Nighthawkswith him at the Shafer‐Rachelle VFW Post inEastpointe.

Junior ROTC Awards PresentationSubmitted by Brian Bobek

For the second year, I was invited to present a medal to one of the Lincoln High SchoolJROTC cadets. These medals are presented to the young cadets to honor their academicstatus as well as their service to community and the objectives of the JROTC program. My

award was presented to Col. Joshua Henning, who is the Battalion Commandant of this unit.I'm always amazed to see the adherence to military protocol these young people exhibit.Their general demeanor reflects their strict code of conduct. Every other militaryorganization could learn a few things from these young people. Not to mention my recipienthas more decorations hanging on his chest than General Westmoreland.

I hate to have the membership not being kept up to date with some of the important information that gets

sent out. We have about 200 email members out of 600 total membership, and that's a lot of people not getting timelynotifications of things. I try to be discrete in what I send out so you're not going to be bombarded with meaningless messages.

Wolverine Harley-Davidson and the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 154 are teaming up to ride for our Veterans! The day begins at 9:00 a.m. with a continental breakfast at the dealership. The ride departs at 11:30, rain or shine, on a 60-mile

scenic ride before returning to Wolverine Harley-Davidson for great food and refreshments, music, and tour of Michigan Vietnam Veterans Traveling Memorial.

Register before June 1st to receive $5 off each registration fee!The first 300 registrants will receive a FREE ride t-shirt!

All proceeds from this event will help sustain the servicesoffered by the Veteran Support Center of Roseville.
