Spanish Rule

Pizarro conquered the Incas and Spain ruled most of the western South America for about 300 years.

Meanwhile…..

On the other side of South America, the Portuguese were claiming lands in the area of Brazil.

Spain and Portugal began disputing over land in South America.

The Treaty of Tordesillas solved the dispute.

In the Treaty, Spain claimed lands west of the line and Portugal claimed lands east of the line.

The significance of the Treaty of Tordesillas:

Most of Latin America (area south of the United States) speaks Spanish today and has a heavy Spanish cultural influence, while Brazil speaks Portuguese and has a heavy Portuguese cultural influence.
