ASTROCAMP 2015 – Parent Meeting

2-liter Bottles are needed!•We need them to build rockets!• Please have your student bring

one on April 17th or drop them off in JM206, Mr. Eastman’s room.

• About a 2.5 hr. bus ride from El Segundo

• 92 acres of meadow and forest

• At 5600 ft. elevation in the mountains of Idyllwild, CA, east of Palm Springs

ASTROCAMP•Run by Guided Discoveries•Students will be participating in about 8 different,

hands-on science classes▫Rocket Building and Launching▫Planetarium ▫Vinewalk▫Cosmic Lander▫Rock Climbing▫Zipline▫Space Night and Astro Olympics

•All classes/groups run by trained, CPR-certified staff

Daily Schedule:▫Wake-up @ 7:00▫Breakfast @ 7:30▫8:45-12:00 Morning Class Sessions▫Lunch @ 12:30▫Free Time▫2:00-5:15 Afternoon Class Sessions▫Dinner @ 5:30▫Free Time▫Evening Class Session▫Lights Out @ 9:30

Meals• All meals will be served in dining hall, however STUDENTS MUST

BRING THEIR OWN BAG LUNCH ON FRIDAY!

• Sample Menu:▫ Breakfast: Pancakes, scrambled eggs, hash brown, sausage; fruit juice,

milk, cereal selection, yogurts, fresh fruit, Danish, bagels or English muffins

▫ Lunch: Pizza, hamburgers, OR cold-cut; fruit drink, water, salad bar with mixed greens, chopped veggies, canned fruit, potato salad, pasta or soup

▫ Dinner: Lasagna (meat and veggie), turkey, chicken OR Mexican; milk, water; salad bar, and dessert (brownies, cookies, cake, ice cream)

• A refillable water bottle is a great idea

• Vegetarian meals are always available. Please let me know of any special food needs, etc.

Dorms• Separate dorm floors for boys and girls▫Lori Preuss & Megan DeLong will chaperone the girls’ dorm

rooms. ▫Al Luna , Luke Olesiuk, and John Eastman will chaperone the

boys’ dorm rooms.•Each floor has:▫6 rooms, each sleeping up to 6 students▫Chaperone rooms at each end of the floor▫A bathroom with several toilets, sinks, showers

• Students will choose/decide their rooms upon arrival (they always make it work!)

Important Dates/Times•Depart from ESMS Friday, April 17th @ 8:00 AM▫Meet at the picnic tables behind Bulldog Hall at 7:30 AM▫Take bus to Astrocamp▫We will stop for a bathroom break at about 9:30 or 10:00,

before heading up the hill to the camp.

•Arrive back at ESMS Sunday, April 19th @ about 3:30 – 4:00 PM▫Will initiate a phone tree once we board the buses in Long

Beach

What to Pack• Everything you pack, you have to haul pack light

•One duffle bag w/sleeping bag or bed roll & pillow

• Toiletries including your own towel, soap and shampoo

•When packing, plan for warm days and COLD nights▫Shorts are ok, but pack jeans/pants also for nights▫Dress in layers – T-shirt, sweatshirt, light jacket, etc.▫Hats and gloves might come in handy as well

• Hiking boots are not needed, but sturdy shoes are a must. Sandals and flip-flops are not a good idea.

• Check with the National Weather Service at http://goo.gl/63hm2Q for the weather in Idyllwild, CA

What NOT to Pack•DO NOT bring:▫curling irons/flat irons/hair dryers▫weapons▫matches▫snacks/candy/gum/food

(absolutely no food in the dorms)▫electronics/iPods▫ laser pointers▫cell phones

(out of range)

Medications

• If your child takes prescription medication or medication on a regular basis, please put it in a labeled Ziplock bag, with instructions, and give it to me Friday morning.

• If student has an inhaler or Epipen, give one to your child and one to me. These are REQUIRED, even if you don’t use them often.

Other Stuff

•Students will be getting a specially-designed, long-sleeve, ESMS ASTROCAMP T-shirt to wear on the Friday we depart. Included in price.

•There is a Student Store at ASTROCAMP which sells t-shirts (short & long sleeve), sweatshirts, books, and other memorabilia (freeze-dried ice cream is very popular). We will have time as a group to go to the store. If interested bring a few $ along.

•Cameras are a fun option but not required

Other Stuff

•Behavior Issues: Parents will be called and will need to arrange to retrieve your child.

• In the event of an EMERGENCY ONLY, contact the ESMS school office, and they will be able to get in touch with us or contact Guided Discoveries directly at 951-973-3091

Payment

•Final Payment of $335 was due last Friday, March 20th

• If you haven’t submitted it yet, please get it to me as soon as possible.
