FUNDRAISING TERMINOLOGY

• Appeal – a short-term activity with a specific objective & a specific instance of a request (e.g. mass mailing, telemarketing event, fun run) – Appeals are not required in iMIS

• Campaign – an orchestrated fundraising effort that lasts a certain period of time and may contain a series of appeals (e.g. erect a new building, capital campaign) –Campaigns are not required in iMIS

FUNDRAISING TERMINOLOGY

• Fund – a legal entity within an organization with a separate set of books (e.g. endowment fund, building fund) – A fund designation is required in iMIS

• Distribution – Preset combination of a fund, campaign, and appeal (not necessary to have all three) that determines how the gift or pledge is recorded (i.e. the account #) – A distribution is required in iMIS

FUNDRAISING TERMINOLOGY

• Donor club – A method to recognize the various levels of giving (e.g. Century Club - $100-$499; Benefactor - $500-$999; Patron - $1,000-$4,999)

• In-Kind Contribution – A non-cash contribution with monetary value (e.g. professional services, equipment, supplies). An in-kind contribution is usually used within 12 months

FUNDRAISING TERMINOLOGY

• Pledge – A donor agrees to make a payment sometime in the future. It may be a one-time contribution or one made in installments. If an initial payment is made at the time of the pledge, the initial payment is treated as a gift or down payment on the pledge. This creates A/R.

• Request – A method of recording an appeal that you are reasonably confident will result in a gift or pledge. A request is recorded at the time it happens. This does not create A/R.
