World biofuels production(Million tonnes oil equivalent)

Supply increased for the tenth year in a row as ethanol output reached 43.5 mtoe (1.5 mb/d) and biodiesel production hit 15.8 mtoe (0.4 mb/d). Ethanol production accelerated by 16% compared to 9% in 2009, while biodiesel growth slowed to 9% compared to growth of 24% the previous year. (Source: BP)

POLICY

Algae-Based Renewable Fuel Promotion ActU.S. Senator Bill Nelson introduced the bill to “amend the Internal Revenue Code to modify the definition of "cellulosic biofuel" for purposes of the cellulosic biofuel producer tax credit and the special depreciation allowance to mean any liquid fuel which is derived solely by, or from, qualified feedstocks. Defines "qualified feedstocks" as any lignocellulosic or hemicellulosic matter that is available on a renewable or recurring basis and any cultivated algae, cyanobacteria, or lemna.”
