aicc(Wa)’s health & Medical Delegation to
israel - May 2019“
Background to the AICC(Wa)’s Health & Medical Delegation to Israel - May 2019
A large contingent of 36 delegates, led by the Hon Roger Cook MLA, Deputy Premier and Minister for Health departed for Israel in late May to explore opportunities for research collaboration, business development and learnings in exemplary and innovative health care delivery. The timing of this delegation coincided with the WA State Government’s investment into health and medical research. With the objective of transforming Western Australia into a leader of medical research and innovation, the May 2019 State Budget allocated additional investment into this sector. A total of $126.6 million has been provisioned over the next four years through the Future Health Research and Innovation Fund. The delegation included leaders from WA’s main health and medical agencies, including royal Flying Doctor service, perron Institute, rpH research Foundation, Harry perkins Institute of Medical research, st John of God Health care, the Australasian college of Dermatologists and st John Ambulance. participating were Dr David russell-Weisz, the Director General of Health; professor peter Klinken Ac, WA’s chief scientist; Dr robyn Lawrence, chief Executive, north Metropolitan Health service and professor Gary Geelhoed, Executive Director of Western Australian Health Translation network. As well, industry professionals from ramsay Health care, Telstra Health, Allscripts, Linear, Microsoft Australia, Wrays, NeuroScientific Pharmaceuticals and Cisco attended along with UWA, notre Dame, curtin and Murdoch Universities. Israel is at the forefront of health, medical and life science research and commercialization, constantly attracting delegations of industry professionals and governments from around the world. The Australia-Israel chamber of commerce AIcc(WA) develops partnerships and facilitates bilateral trade across many industry sectors, regularly conducting trade delegations to Israel for WA business leaders and professionals.
The Israeli Life sciences Industry has over 1,450 companies employing 85,000 people, attracting Us$1.2 billion per annum in venture capital funding. An engine for the development of new life science focused companies are the 18 life-science focused start-up company incubators and one designated bio - technological incubator which are privately funded and supported by the Israeli Government. Many of these are outside the major urban centres of Israel, providing relevant lessons and insights for Western Australia.Highlights of the Delegation to Israel included a showcase of Israeli medical device start-ups, healthcare innovations, diagnostic robotics and clinical research. Also featured were digital Health ventures presented by the Office of Israel’s chief scientist and visits to several Healthcare campuses to explore clinical research and commercialisation. The delegation was designed to connect the WA health and medical sectors to Israeli companies with patents in biotech, nanotechnology, medical devices, specialist data analytics and cyber security technology for the medical sector, pharmaceuticals and rehabilitation markets.
