UNITED KINGDOM
ACTIFLO: sand ballasted clarification from municipal water treatment
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies provided the processdesign, construction, installation, testing and commissioningof 3 Actiflo High Rate Clarifiers and 2 Multiflo forbackwash water recovery. The project included sand storage, make up, transfer and recovery system, polymer make upand dosing system, MCC and software for the abovesystems.
The purpose of the project is to prevent Cryptosporidium,
reduce the levels of manganese in the final water andimprove the disinfection system by reducing TOC content.

PILOT TRIALS
In order to provide confidenceto the potential Client, VWSinstalled and operated for a 10months period in 1999 - 2000 a200 m
3/hr pilot plant at
Watchgate WTW. The pilotplant provided data for Actifloperformance and subsequentsand filtration. Based on these
results UU specified Actiflo forclarification at Ulpha WTW.
THE CLIENT
United Utilities are the 2nd
largest water company inEngland / Wales. They areresponsible for an area in thenorth west of the UK, whichincludes major Cities such asManchester and Liverpool.
Area served: 15,378km2Population served: 6.6m
THE WORKS
Ulpha WTW is located nearMillom in Cumbria in the LakeDistrict National Park and itsupplies 30,000 people in thegreater Barrow-in-Furness area.
THE ACTIFLO PROCESS
Actiflo
is a very compact process that utilises microsand asa seed for floc formation. The microsand provides surfacearea that enhances flocculation and also acts as a ballast orweight.
The resulting microsand ballasted floc display unique settlingcharacteristics, which allow for clarifier designs with highoverflow rates and short retention times. These designs
result in system footprints that are between 5 times smallerthan classic lamella clarifier or dissolved air flottation and upto 20 times smaller than conventional clarification systems ofsimilar capacity, with an ability to start up from a standbymode of operation to a steady state operating mode withinminutes.
