What do you do at Fight Sports Centre?We change lives. From stressed-out

execs who need to smash something, toproperty owners who feel safer and moreconfident learning self-defence, to studentsand stay-at-home moms getting and stayingin good shape, we make lives better. We havespecialist trainers in mixed martial arts(MMA), judo, boxing, muay Thai, boxercise,kickboxercise and functional fitness.

What is a typical work day for you?There ’s an awesome atmosphere in the

gym. Everyone who comes in is lekker —there are no inflated egos or lousy attitudes.Everyone comes in to work hard, there’s nojudgment. If you’re not sweaty and messy,you ’re not working hard enough. And every-one drives everyone else to uphold the workethic. The energy is infectious.

That said, it’s also a fun, laid-back atmo-sphere. We open at 5.15am most days, andfrom then, until we close at 7.30pm, there areguys and gals hitting the bags or the pads oron the mats or weights. It’s a great place towork, and work out. I’ve put a lot of thoughtinto the benefits of exercising, and the bene-fits of exercising in a combat sport especially,the way it changes you on a primal level.

You were an MMA fighter. Has this madeyou a better businessman?

There ’s an art to everything. There’s a sci-ence to everything, too. You must learn, testand understand the science first, and then,when you express it in your own unique way,it becomes art (because art is self-expres-sion). I learnt that the hard way with world-class athletes punching me in the face. That

was good motivation. Once the art started tofall into place, what was difficult becamesmooth, what was fast became slow. That’sart. Sun Tzu wrote in The Art of War that waris a “game ” of strategy, of leverage (levers)and force multipliers. I want to know whichlevers to pull to get the best results. I guessyou could say 15 years of getting beaten uptaught me that I liked levers.

And how has it made you a better coach?I studied most of a sport psychology de-

gree in my early 20s. I dropped out in the lastmonth of my last year after getting distinc-tions all the way. I’d taken what I wantedfrom it. It gave me some theoretical basis. I’vealso been blessed to have a lot of time withworld-class coaches like Nick Durandt andShuaimeng Liu. I also have a very obsessive,impatient nature, so I want to develop bril-liance in my clients as quickly as possible.

What did you want to be when you were achild?

I wanted to be a fighter for as far back as Ican remember. I remember watching a box-

I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by

brilliant business people so I’ve had moun-tains of good advice. Avoiding the commonstuff, I’d say there is one thing that is not spo-ken about enough. “If you’re not the mostuseless guy in the room, you’re in the wrongroom. But if you don’t know more about yourindustry than everybody else, you’re going toget eaten alive.”

The incumbent will be required to provide advice and analysis on public sector personnel policy and the financial implications thereof in liaison with the DPSA on personnel and general public sector reform issues.

Qualifications and experience requirements: • Minimum of 5 years’ experience at a middle management level (Deputy Director) obtained in budgeting and knowledge of the Government Remuneration Policy • Knowledge and experience of the Government Wage Negotiation Process • Knowledge and experience of the Public Sector Bargaining Council functioning process • Knowledge of the Government policy framework pertaining to the broader Remuneration Policy • Minimum degree in Economics/Social Sciences/Law or Public Administration.
