My Brilliant Career
In her 38 years in the tyre business, Renniele Grange has seen more women enter amale-dominated industry.
By MARGARET HARRIS
How did you end up working in the motorindustry?
I was interested in fashion initially andbecame a fashion ramp model and studied
fashion design part time, but the process ofstarting my career was too slow, so I movedto Johannesburg in my early 20s.
I did various jobs before enrolling withKelly Personnel and was hired as an assistantbuyer to the general manager at Tiger Wh eel& Tyre. Six months later, the company wentthrough a transition and the bike tyre de-partments closed, so I moved roles to be-come the executive PA to the national salesdirector and technical manager. I hated it.
A few months into the executive PA posi-tion, one of our top sales reps was tragicallykilled in a car accident. I was sad that a closecolleague had passed away but I felt a strongdesire to fill this position. However, the de-
partment had only male employees. I stoodfirm and became the first Indian female inthe tyre industry. I pushed myself andworked hard, resulting in my sales going toanother level. I sold a million alloy wheelsand won an incentive trip to Mauritius an dthen took every prize as the top sales rep. Ihad overcome all doubters and naysayers.
You have been in the industry for 38 yearsand must have seen big changes. Whatwould be some of the biggest?
Seeing the increase in the number ofwomen in this male-dominated industry andalso seeing women ascending to positions ofpower and leadership has been satisfying .
How to . . .
● Allowing employees to workthemselves to a standstill benefits no one, including the employer.
Some companies may actually rewardemployees who work to the exclusion ofall else or penalise those who ask for help. But burnout can stifle innovation and leadto a toxic workplace.
Lyndy van den Barselaar, MD atManpowerGroup SA, says managers needto be on the lookout for the symptoms ofburnout in their team members.
“Burnout will not only cause physicaland mental health issues for employees, but will also cause ineffectiveness. It is inemployers’ best interests to ensure theytake the correct steps to mitigate this.”
She has the following advice:● There are many forms burnout can
take — as a manager make sureemployees are coping and make it clearthere will be no stigma admitting to beingoverwhelmed.
● A more flexible work day can protectat-risk employees.
● Working flat out for 11 months andthen taking a month off can be too muchfor some employees. Managers canencourage their team members to takemore frequent, shorter holidays, even longweekends. — Margaret Harris

Tell me about the work you do.I negotiate and structure deals at senior
levels, dealing with corporate customers in-teracting with buyers, procurement execu-tives, right up to CEOs of small to large com-panies. We give all our customers the samespecial attention. My aim is to provide thebest deals and ensure customer satisfactionto ensure repeat business.
What did you want to be when you were achild?
A lawyer. I loved the way my cousin, whowas a lawyer, spoke. She would share herday in court with me, I wanted it so badly. Mymom was a widow and a factory worker.Money was limited, so I stopped dreaming asI did not have the opportunity to study law.
What do you find most meaningful aboutthe work you do?
The adrenaline rush of closing deals, andensuring the customer is satisfied. I enjoymeeting new people and building businessrelationships while making reasonable prof-its for my employer.
What is the best advice you havereceived?
Look after your customers and they willlook after you. Passion! Passion! Passion! From Clive Blechman, my current CEO.
What makes someone employable?Honesty, integrity and the ability to follow
instructions and deliver the goals I set forthem. Being passionate, treating work as acareer and not a job, and having team-playerspirit .
