Introduction

• Polymer surfaces often exhibit high friction

• High friction can cause a number of difficulties in:

– Winding of film rolls

– Bag production

– Packaging operations

– Mold release

• Additives are required to reduce surface friction

What are Crodamide™ slip & anti-block additives

• The Crodamide range includes a variety of slip & anti-block additives:

– Primary amides

– Secondary amides

– Secondary bis-amides

• They can be incorporated directly into the polymer during the extrusion proces

• Crodamides are migrating additives that move to the polymer surface on cooling

• Lower friction is achieved between contacting polymer surfaces from a solid

lubricating layer on the surface

Effect of Crodamide™ additives on friction

Applications - slip

• This is the movement of a polymer surface against some other surface

• The interaction of surfaces can be polymer to polymer, polymer to metal or

polymer to glass

• High slip relates to a low friction value

Slip (measured by CoF - Coefficient of Friction)

High slip in LDPE

High slip in PP

Medium slip in LDPE

Applications – anti-block

• Slip and blocking are related phenomena both involving the interaction of

surfaces

• Most Crodamides will modify the blocking performance in film to some extent

• Since Crodamides form layers at the surface, they generally do not affect the

clarity of film
