Finding reasons
Attitude is the biggest concern for coporates while employing the previouslyself-employed. Ravi S Singh, Founder, www.insiders.co.in highlighted, “Selfemployment comes with a lot of freedom and discipline. But, it is this attitude of ‘I ammy boss’ which makes most the corporate organisation worry that how will he/she fit
into a reporting structure.” However, he adds that more than attitude it is the ego shedding process which becomes verydifficult for self-employed individuals to handle.
Besides, attitude there are other concerns as well. As Manoj Gupta, Founder, www.craftsvilla.com stated, “It is a combinationof a lot of things including inability to adjust to a reporting hierarchy in an organisation, bureaucracy of a big organisation,unable to work in a group environment and inability to delegate tasks and lack of team motivational skills.”
Looking at the positives
Despite the obvious challenges, there are benefits of employing enterpreuners as well. Experts believe that a self-employedcandidate brings in a lot of experience and business knowledge. Shikha Taneja, senior Director Human Resources,ShopClues.com feels that there are times when such hires prove to be really good. “Especially when they are given anopportunity to lead a project individually they may come out very well because of their entrepreneurial skills,” she said. Sheadds, “Since we are a start-up and start ups need entrepreneurial skills in employees who are self driven and self motivated,we do give opportunities to self employed.”

Singh also shared similar sentiments. Discussing the employee ratio of his organisation he said, “Being a startup with aunique value proposition products we look majorly (almost 80%) at hiring free lancers and self-employed people for our team.Hiring self employed works wonder for us because they have a risk taking attitude and hence they work on a high percentagevariable which drastically reduces our monthly fixed overheads and get us highly skilled and self motivated people at almost50% less fixed salary.”
Underlining the exceptions, Hussain Tinwala, General Manager, TeamLease Services stated, “In technical fields –engineering and IT companies, if the requirement demands niche skill sets, employers may make adjustments to hire suchincumbents.”
Beyond facts
While few organisations (mostly start-ups) consider hiring self-employed advantageous, popular consensus remains that it isa tricky association. Most of the companies interviewed revealed that only about 5-10% of their employee strength consist ofpreviously self-employed individuals.
However, experts affirmed that more than the facts behind the fear of hiring self-employed, it’s the mind-set and outlook whichneeds to be transformed. Sakaar Anand, VP-HR, CA Technologies believes that the way one views a self-employed personmakes all the difference. “While some may consider a self-employed person as a resource with unnecessary baggage, othersmight view a self-employed person in a positive light – one who takes initiative, is a self-starter and self-motivated,” hementioned. So, at the end, what matters is that how the organisation perceives a self-employed and how a self-employedperson positions himself in the corporate world.
