Connected Car Market 2015-2025: Leading Companies Providing Telematics for in-Vehicle Safety, Security & Infotainment
6. Expert Opinion
6.1 Expert Opinion – Sierra Wireless Sierra Wireless offers wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) devices including 2G, 3G and 4G
embedded modules as well as automotive technology. The company is headquartered in
Vancouver and employs 1,000 people. In 2009, Sierra Wireless acquired the French company
Wavecom, which was always focused on the automotive business.
In 2012 Sierra Wireless acquired part of Sagemcom, another French company that is also highly
experienced in the automotive industry. The following year, Sierra Wireless sold its consumer-
orientated part to Netgear in the US; from early 2013 onwards, Sierra Wireless has been purely an
M2M Automotive-focused company.
Sierra Wireless’ focus is on the embedded module sector of the connected car market. The
company is a second tier supplier, with a customer list that includes Harman, Continental and
Magneti Marelli.
In September 2014, Visiongain spoke to Andreas Kohn, Director of Marketing in Transportation
and Automotive of Sierra Wireless. We are grateful for his contribution.
6.1.1 Sierra Wireless on Their Services Visiongain: Could you tell us a little bit more about the specific services for which Sierra Wireless specialises within the automotive sector? Sierra Wireless: Firstly, what is very specific in what we serve, are the automotive processes. You
have to follow the automotive processes, from production size, to development, software CMMI
levels, and so on. There are so many audits from first tier suppliers and car manufacturers directly,
and so we know that Sierra Wireless is very good in following the standards and processes of the
automotive industry.
Secondly there is support. Support is very important. These projects last over many years; from the
RFQ phase, to the development phase, to mass production. Overall we are talking about 7-10
years easily. You need to support in all phases and of course, the main support will take place in
the development phase, which will last between one and a half to two and a half years. Sierra
Wireless has dedicated support people focusing only on the automotive segment in order to
achieve what our customer expects from us.

Connected Car Market 2015-2025: Leading Companies Providing Telematics for in-Vehicle Safety, Security & Infotainment
7.1 Airbiquity Overview
Revenue 2013: $2.1bn Service Category Mobile integration services and cloud-based
platforms Telematics System Choreo 5.0 Headquarters Seattle, WA, USA IR Contact sfrank@airbiquity.com
Website www.airbiquity.com
7.1.1 Airbiquity’s Role in the Connected Car Market
Airbiquity is a software company that provides the connected vehicle infrastructure for more than
16 million vehicles worldwide. Their platform brand, Choreo, provides services and connectivity for
large players in the Connected Car market such as Ford, Nissan, Bosch, Motorola, BMW and GM’s
OnStar.
Airbiquity has a strong focus on integrating mobile devices and cloud storage into vehicles. The
company sees this as the most reliable and cost-efficient way to get wireless connectivity into the
vehicle and therefore will push the BYOD market forward. The Choreo platform is also strongly
focused on creating OEM value from connected vehicles. This value comes primarily from remote
diagnostics where the vehicle itself provides feedback to the manufacturer.
7.1.2 Airbiquity’s Key Developments in 2014
Having released Chore 5.0, the latest update of its cloud-based mobile integration solution in May
2013, Airbiquity has been updating and further developing its platform throughout 2014. The
additions of infotainment content providers such as Twitter, Tuneln Radio, and Slacker Radio
highlight the progress made. Moreover, the company has commenced the deployment of two
content providers Eurosport and NAVX, to serve the European connected car market. Finally, the
company was listed in national ranking on the Inc 5000 list based on its three year sales growth of
91%.
