2. I would like to share the LittlePublicized Story of Dans PlaneCrash 3. On August 24, 2008 Dan survived a horrible plane crash in LasCabaas, Guatemala 4. Dan watched four of his friendsand co-workers burn to death afterhe was pulled from the wreckageby campesinos. 5. Eight other very good people that were on the plane also died before his eyes. 6. Dan was unable to move becausehis legs were smashed. 7. Coincidentally, the plane crashed in the middle of drug cartel countryand at first the locals thought the plane had been shot down by thecartel because of a fight between rival cartels the week before. 8. Shortly After the Crash, the US DEA raidedthe town, and the cartel blew up a bus inretaliation. 9. The story I want to tell is why Dan was on thatplane in Guatemala that went down in drugcartel country, and what he did after thatcrash to help those who lost their loved onesand to honor their memory. 10. This is the Dan Liljenquist I know. 11. Prior to August 24, 2008 Dan wanted to join Focus because of itsmission statement:Community: We HaveResponsibility to Mankind andWork to Improve Their Lives. As part of this mission statement, Focuswould annually go with Choice Humanitarianto El Estor, Guatemala, to build a school forthis very poor community. Focus Donates Over 10% of its income andemployees time to Community Service. 12. New School wasbeing built hereSchool projects to educate adults 13. Focus had a contest based upon performance andessays with its employees to determine who would goon the all expense paid and salary earning week longservice trip, with Dan serving as the management on thetrip. 14. The Robaneles had three children 15. It came time for the 2008 Trip 16. Dan was Senior Management onthe Trip, leaving his wife Brookeand 5 kids for a week to serve thepeople of Guatemala. 17. On the morning of August 24, 2008, Dan, his four employees, seven others fromChoice all from Utah or with family from Utah except the two GuatemalanChoice Humanitarian representatives, and the two Guatemalan Pilots boardeda Cessna Gran Caravan in Guatemala, City, excited for the one hour flight to ElEstor. 18. Flight, the Engine Failed due todefective compressorturbine, throwing oil over thewindows and making the plane gosilent 19. Unfortunately, the plane had beenoverloaded, and the pilot picked a very small fieldin which to attempt an emergency landing Field Pilots Chose 20. The left wing clipped a palmtree, catapolting the plane onto itsback and starting fire 21. Though he had no use of his smashed legs, Dan tried to pull the metal off his friend JohnCarter until the fire got to him and significantly burnt his leg. He crawled to the doorand was pulled from the wreckage by campesinos. Dan laid in the dirt field and watchedhis friends die. After the fire was put out, Dan was put in a truck and taken to a hospitalin Zacapa, 45 excruciatingly painful minutes away on a dirt road, his feet and legsshattered and in horrible pain as they moved without splint, upon hitting every bump. 22. Dan was transferred by helicopterto the Pilar Hospital in GuatemalaCity 23. His dear friends, co-workers andcolleagues, went home in caskets 24. Dan was admitted to Pilar Hospitaland diagnosed with horribleorthopedic leg and ankle injuriesthat required immediate surgeryand hardware placement. 25. Dans wife and his brother and father, whoare doctors, rushed to his side in Guatemala 26. after a few days to theirhome, where a hospital bedawaited Dan. 27. It was upon his return home that Ilearned just how extra-ordinaryDan and Brooke Liljenquist are. 28. Upon his return home, while in his hospital bed, firstcame the Carter family to learn how John died. Thoughin horrible pain, both physically and emotionally, he gotout of bed and went to Johns funeral and he and Brookeprovided care and comfort to his widow and kids. 29. Next Came the Liz Johnson Familyto talk with Dan and Brooke andfind out how Liz passed away. 30. Dan helped get the RobanalesChildren from Guatemala. Heassisted in getting a daughtermatriculated at BYU and the sonson LDS Missions. 31. Dan knew he needed to get to Illinois and meet with theReppe and Silva families, but his leg injuries were stillhorribly painful, walking was difficult, as was themounting survivors guilt. Despite his pain, we traveledto Rock Falls, Illinois and Dan spent hours with bothfamilies explaining the last hours of their loved oneslives. Many tears were shed. 32. It was on that trip to Illinois, that Dan told me that he no longer felt that his life was his own and that he owed it to those who perished to make a difference in this world. While you may not agree with his political positions, you can be assured of his integrity and genuineness that he wants to serve in the US Senate because he has been blessed with the gift of life. It was there in Illinois, in the land of Lincoln and the hometown of Ronald Reagan, that I realized Dans greatness, not only in his policies and political views, most of which I agree with, but his love of life, his personal rectitude and his understanding that his life is not his alone, but is a gift from God that must be shared. It confirmed a deep impression I had received while standing in the field in Guatemala months earlier, trying to comprehend the randomness of who died and who survived, and the tragedy that the families were suffering. I was picking up parts of the plane crash when the impression hit me: God spared Dan Liljenquist for a reason. I do not know if thatDan with John Carters Brother at the Focus 4reason is that he is to be a US Senator or if it is to raiserun to honor the lost 4 from Focus Services. his six children and continue to torture Brooke (actually they are madly in love so I am teasing when I say torture) or all three, but I do know that Dan was spared to bless others lives. I know it. I know Dan knows it. 33. Dans greatness, charity and unconditional love was further verified when the pilotsGuatemalan families asked Dan for help as the Guatemalan legal system is non-functional. I told Dan that it was partially the fault of the pilots that the accidenthappened and there was nothing that could be done. Dan responded, I dont care!!!They have families that need help! Get them help! Because of Dans persistence, thepilots families got access to the US legal system and now have financial security. 34. Dan and Brooke have gone and met theGuatemalan pilots families and aredear friends with them. 35.
