MEDIASCAPES CASE STUDIES

[ Serpentina | Portugal ]

2011-2013

MEDIASCAPES aims at exploring various relationships among

types of space, media, and people, approaching such findings

from a media literacy perspective, by drawing inferences to be

used in non-formal and informal learning of adults, especially

and foremost in family settings. The Partnership intends to

address issues related to the convergence and divergence among

‘classic’ and digital cultural forms by:

a) exploring a series of social and cultural practices

involving the use of media in the family, as reconfigured

by new cultural forms generated by digital technologies;

b) exploring relationships among space, people, and media in

urban settings, including cases of accommodation or

conflict between physical space and cyberspace;

c) drawing out implications of findings in terms of

guidelines for trainers involved in inter-generational

and family learning, and generating a collection of case

studies and best/good practices, assembled on an online

resource center.

The project was held between 1st. August 2011 and 31th. July

2013, with the following partners:

Asociatia Epsilon III - Bucharest - RO (Coordinator)

Asociatia Grouw up Project - Focsani - RO (Partner)

- Promote digital inclusion

Description of the

activity

After a presentation of a set of

possibilities, for using digital tools in

for adopting healthy food habits and the

promotion of digital inclusion in families

settings, the dialog was open to the group

that shared experiences, gave new ideas and

explored new ways of implement it.

The result of this Brainstorming was

compiled for use in the design of future

workshops on this topic.

A healthy lunch was prepared and served

afterwards.

This workshop was held under the first

very interesting exercise for the exchange

of experiences and opinions for the design

of future workshops in this context, and

also for the group members start to know

each other in an informal atmosphere.

Lessons learned

It is a topic to explore in other

activities.

Description of

the activity

In pairs, participants went for a walk in

Lisbon down town and took photos of Lisbon

inspired by each of the five senses, i.e.:

- Lisbon smells like what?

- Lisbon sounds like what?

- Lisbon tastes like what?

Impact

The methodology of participatory photography

was unknown to all the participants, what made

the exercise very exciting for everyone. The

sharing of the work in Facebook was important

because participants could show, share and

receive feedback from relatives and friends.

Lessons learned

The activity must take place in one day and not

dispersed for 3 sessions in order to keep

Impact

Being together at the walk through the city

and sharing different points of view about it

was a very happy moment of the activity.

Students enjoy as well having a portrait of

themselves by a professional photographer.

Most of them didn´t have ear about QR Codes

and were very excited to show to their

families how to do it/them.

The theater play was also a success and a

very special moment for the students and

their families.

Lessons learned

The goal of the exhibition was not entirely

perceived and the result wasn’t the one that

we expected (most of the ladies chose the

same garden to take the portrait near a

flower..).

A more detailed explanation is needed about

the goals to be achieved by the activity and

some examples must be presented as well.

Description of

the activity

After a guided tour to Ajuda´s courtyards, the

participants created podcasts about each of the

six courtyards visited, and then made them

available to the public through PODMATIC. At the

same time a map with the location of each

COURTYARD was made by the participants with

Impact

The guided tour was open to the public and it

was very participated by local people (around 60

persons). The workshop was held one week later

with a group of 10 seniors. They made the audio-

guides and the map. It was the first time they

heard their voices recorded and available to all

through the net. It was a very rewarding

experience for all. The audio-guides are still

available to the ones who want to make a tour

through Ajuda´s courtyards.

Perhaps the most important thing is that the

participants felt that they were doing something

useful to others in a quite new way, and they

saw that was easy to manipulate these tools.

Lessons learned

To the Audio - Guide Workshop we need at least 3

hours; 3:30h would be a perfect duration.
