Portugal

Portugal, officially the Portuguese Republic, is a country located in the Iberian Peninsula, in southwestern Europe. It has a total area of 92,391 km², and is the westernmost nation of Europe.

The Portuguese territory is bordered on the north and east by Spain and on the south and west by the Atlantic Ocean. It includes the mainland and two archipelagos which are autonomous regions: the Azores and Madeira.

During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Portugal was a world power in the economical, social and cultural areas, becoming the first and most enduring colonial empire of global scope.

It is now a developed country, economically prosperous, socially and politically stable and with a high position in the Human Development Index. It is among the countries with a high quality of life, although its Gross Domestic Product per capita is the lowest among the countries of Western Europe.

Portugal is a member of the United Nations and of The European Union, and a founding member of NATO, OECD, the Eurozone (European Union) and of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries. Our country participates in various peacekeeping missions of The United Nations. Portugal is also a member of the Schengen area.

Lisbon is the capital and largest city of Portugal.

In 1994 Lisbon was designated Europe's Cultural Capital.

In 1998, Expo 98 was held in Lisbon ("The Oceans as a resource for the Future" - from May 22 to September 30, 1998).

It was very appropriate that Expo 98, whose theme was the Oceans, was held in a country whose mariners defied the sea and gave New Worlds to the world.

The heart of the city is Downtown (Baixa) or city centre. There we can find the most beautiful and attractive monuments with a lot of secrets to discover.

Loures

Loures is a city and a municipality to the north of Lisbon.

Created on 26 July 1886 by a royal decree, the municipality currently occupies an area of 169 km² and has about 200,000 inhabitants (2001).

The city itself has a population of 15,967 inhabitants.

The municipality is basically divided into three areas: the rustic one to the north, the urban one to the south and the urban-industrial to the east.

In Loures, the proclamation of the Republic happened one day before the rest of the country: it was on 4th October 1910 that the Republicans from Loures proclaimed the establishment of the new regime, in the old Town Hall.

The older population from Loures were very conected to agriculture. But that was some time ago. Nowadays things are very diferent, since most of the agricultural fields have been replaced by buildings.

Our town has a little bit of everything: We have gyms, markets, super markets, a vast number of stores that sell everything from lockers to shoes. And recently a shoping centre, called “Loureshopping”, has been built. But that´s not all. A new hospital and an underground connection to Lisbon have been anounced for Loures.

Secondary School José Afonso is located in the center of Loures which allows the school to be attended by a school population from the most diverse areas of the municipality. It became operational on 17 October 1975, being the first school in the municipality of Loures.

Prior to being a state school, it was named Secondary School of Loures, and was attended by about 70 students, some of which on a boarding regime.

In 1999, the school became known as High School José Afonso, Loures in honour of José Afonso (a Portuguese singer and composer). He is very famous not only because of his activist songs but also for a revolution that happened in Portugal (one of his songs was used as a counter-sign in the “carnation revolution” that led to the fall of the fascist regime).
